Wow this thread hasn't been posted in for a while... anyway I'm now working on my second ever map, which is going to be based on my school's library. I also need to wrap up my first one for dukematch. Back on topic, here's what I've done so far (not much):

Posted Image

I've put in a fully functional urinal with reflective background. Polymer handles mirrors much better than the other renderers.

Here's a pic from the outside. I plan to put more windows in and other stuff to make it look less bland.

It's going to have a bit of polymer RoR. So polymer is a requirement. There's also a bit of custom art. I'll try to put in some good polymer lights later.

Pretty much all the textures there are just placeholders, so they won't be that repetitive in the final version, and if they are, it'll be reflecting the actual building. In the meantime, I have a lot of geometry to work on and sprites to place.

I always love maps that are based on real world locations <_<

A game with guns and Pipebombs coupled with a School Library hmm...no offense but after 1999 I'm not going anywhere near that one.

The screens though look nice though and once you get rid of that same brick texture it'll look great. The reflective urinal sounds cool too. ^o^

The Columbine Massacre? lol I must have been 6 years old when that happened. Here in Australia I saw on the news that a kid on the other side of the country had been stabbed to death at school. You can kind of tell how rarely something like that happens here. True we've got like 1/10th the population of the US...

Yeah me too. I might actually become afflicted and do crazy shit like that in real life too <_<

Seriously, it used to be the done thing in 'the Olde Dayes' to make a Doom level based on your uni campus.

After the events in Colorado, it is now VERY UNCOOL INDEED. If your parents or anyone in the school find out that you are making a shooter level based on a school building, they will freak the f*ck out.

And even worse, such an identical copy of that school´s library. I don´t know whether i´m seeing a game´s screenshots or actual pictures of the place.

I agree, I cannot find it, but I remember a year or two ago some news report of some kid making a level based on his school and getting in some big trouble. I may be mixing up events, but IIRC it was something like that.

Google searches give me nothing though.

Yes, I remember some DooM university DM levels too hehe.

EDIT: This may be the one.

Quote

Police discovered five swords in the bedroom of a Clements High School senior whose home they searched after getting complaints about a 3-D computer “shoot-‘em-up” game map the student designed, which depicted a portion of the school.
FBISD officials said Tuesday school administrators weighed the violent nature of the computer game – a modified version of Counterstrike – along with the discovery of swords in the boy’s room, and other undisclosed information, and decided to classify the matter as a “Level 3” situation.

“When you have the floor plan of a high school that houses over 2,000 students in a game about killing people, you have to have consequences,” FBISD spokeswoman Mary Ann Simpson said. “And also realizing what the reaction would be in the community,” district administrators “still felt very confident in their decision.”

Working on this map for the last two months; lots of on and off work though so it hasn't been one big continuous work unfortunately.

Don't know if I'll keep that sky texture though, we'll see when the map is nearing completion.

I wasn't aware so many people look down at this idea...

I'll keep on making it until the school tells me not to though. My parents already know about it, and several students at my school are giving me positive feedback. Don't forget in Australia it's very rare for people to have guns, let alone guns that are suited to killing people. It's just a bit of fun, going around exploding all the fire extinguishers, going into restricted areas, stuff we would never get to do in real life.

@ the above images,

I like desert levels when done properly. They make me feel isolated and some of them can be quite big, like the abyss.

Another good reason to do it.

You shouldn't allow fools to dictate your behavior.

If said fools put him and his parents onto the front page of the local paper, then that is a good reason not to do it. If putting his name on the front page of the local paper means that in so many years time when he goes out to get a job, a Google search on his name pulls up the terms "school" and "shooter" then he is going to really wish he'd based it on the local supermarket or shopping mall.

Sadly, fools run a lot of things nowadays and you have to smile for them to get by in life for a lot of things. Things might be different in Australia, but then again, I can't say.

Also, it's not fair to put his parents through all that if it does go completely ape-crap.

We are not looking down on the idea. I just think that with what has happened, people in the school board and the "Something Has Got to be Done" brigade might stir up a lot of crap. I can't say for sure if it will or will not, but it has happened before.

Associating a non-school shooter with school shooters would be libelous.

Resisting tyranny is noble, but sometimes futile. It is rational to pick one's battles and resist where it is most likely to do some good, rather than making oneself an easy target for the political enforcers. That's not just a feeling, it's a fact of life.

Yes just look at all the lies Jack Thompson spreads to crucify violent video games. Making up lies to correlate the hot games with the violent events of younger-ish people with no substantial evidence. Thankfully the U.S. court system has not bowed to his lunacy yet.

As far as the new desert map goes I like it it's starting to look like an interesting outdoor area and I like that the whole map is dark and moody. <_<

I still remember reading on the Duke Nukem 3D Wikipedia article, under controversies, that those who ethically opposed the game said that the player earned points for shooting the strippers.

<_<

You know, the people in control of regulating entertainment know as much about video games as I know about string theory. And I'm not an engineer. Why are these morons in charge again?

I remember that too lol.

Wikipedia said:

"Duke Nukem 3D moves the 'shooter' through pornography stores, where Duke can use XXX sex posters for target practice. Duke throws cash at a prostituted woman telling her to 'Shake it, Baby' his gun ever ready. In the game bonus points are awarded for the murder of these mostly prostituted and partially nude women. Duke blows up stained glass windows in an empty church or goes to strip clubs where Japanese women lower their kimonos exposing their breasts. Duke is encouraged to kill defenseless, often bound women.
— Media Watch, Teaching Boys To Kill

It is really funny to think of how waaay off they are when compared to the actual game. Maybe they were thinking of Duke Screw'em 38D. ^o^ Just more anti-game propaganda by "Knowing" Individuals.

A few more things to do and this should be ready for internal beta, map's almost done!

It would be awesome to get a real model for that alien. (hint: "only" needs the animations!)

It would be cool if you, somehow via con code, randomize sizes to not see all cloned aliens over and over again. It even could work kinda %20 +/- and the more bigger the more strength and the more smaller the more fast (as long as the values always oscilate in a small range of about %20).

That's a good feature for zombies (I used that for the undead warriors in WGR2), and I guess it would be ok for aliens. The trick is to make sure they change size at map load time (or right as they spawn if they are respawns) because otherwise you will see them changing size when you encounter them.

It would be easy enough to do, but I'm not really sure it quite.. fits with the verse. Maybe something for future updates though. Once it's out I want to keep it rather open source, even though I kinda raped the code somewhat..

Hey, guys.
I am new in the community.

First I must say, that I am from Germany, so my English is not so good. <_<
Sorry for that...

The work of the duke4.net community is very great! <_<

I have a question:
Is it possible, to make a remake of Duke Nukem 3D in next generation grapics?
I know, that some people thinks, that the idea is not so good...
I am really serious about this..!
I will play a Duke in Next Gen graphic...

I must they, that the graphic mods for Duke Nukem 3D are really good, but the graphics are too old. It dont looks like next gen.
I think that the work of the community is so great, but I think that a complete remke of Duke Nukem 3D is necessary.

Is it possible to make this? And who could implement this idea?

Thanks guys.

Sorry for my bad English!

Sincerely,
Atlas555

As mentioned often before:
3Drealms will not allow to port DN3D to other engines. So, it´s illegal.

I don't know, with Polymer we're getting pretty close. Just look at Duke Nukem Eternity.

It may not be exactly next-gen, but it sure is pretty. hehe.

i like the graphics of the Duke, but i saw some models they are not good <_<

the levels are "square" ....

But, is it possible, to make Duke Nukem 3D in next gen, with the orginal Duke Engine?
