100% agree on this. The reason I said "maybe" was because we have to remain "objective" and shit. Still kicking the expanded universe plus the games (not counting the force unleashed) was a big mistake.

The problem for me with the mandalorian is that at the very least in the first season feels very rushed at the end to give a "interconnected" story if you get what I mean (no really, I'm struggling a little writing my thoughts in English). I feel like the short length of the season (8 episodes) works against the story telling they want to tell.

I feel like when disney gives more artistic control with the right people they do a good job. Legion is a great example. Mandalorian so far is a good one. FX and FXX(disney subsidiaries) has had more hits IMO then disney has these days. Early netflix the same thing. Production companies become garbage when a show starts making money. Mandalorian will eventually go to the pits, the very same way the walking dead, and sons of anarchy did, unless they cut it off early.

Actors will want more money, directors will want more money, cinematographers, art directors, whoever writers will want more money. People will get tired, and just leave. And the heart of the show will disappear, and only be a husk of itself. People will still pay for it though.

Disney is using disposable hit or miss logic with directors because of this, some stuff will be good, some stuff won't. We won't care about the bad stuff, we won't watch it, as we'll pay for the good stuff. They'll do things the same way. Life will go on. They'll keep star wars living, eventually it'll be on life support again, due to not making enough profit.

They'll pay for 1 quality movie, and it'll be "alive" again.

Should have cut it off decades ago IMO.

EDIT: years replaced with decades

Even if the Mandalorian isn't that great when you consider it in isolation, it becomes great when you consider it in context. The showrunners should be praised for resisting the enormous cultural and corporate pressure on them to produce more garbage.

No, it's not the greatest storytelling series ever. I never thought it was. But it's just fun Star Wars again. And I am A-OK with that. In fact I'm excited about it. If the sequel trilogy didn't suck I'd still be really enjoying it. Not everything has to be a mind-bending plot-twisting Citizen Kane-challenging storywriter wankfest to be really good. It can just be solid and really fun and really enjoyable and really simple and filled with tropes but tropes done extremely extremely well.

But I agree these episodes are far too short and too few.

Gotta have exposition to have a good story.

Life without exposition wouldn't be worth living

Mandalorian is good exposition.

I know I suck a certain directors lower extremities quite a bit, he'll probably prove me wrong eventually.

But you gotta have the good stuff, the bad stuff, and everything in between, otherwise you can't have good stuff.

Mandalorian compared to other films and tv shows, put with the best of the best, it's the stuff in between, and that's fine.

It's far better than episode 9, and good exposition for star wars.
I like it as a fan.

Do I like it as a cinemahead?
No

Do I think it should exist?
Not really

But do I like it?
Yeah, it kills the time better than alot of other things.

EDIT: A little secret, I don't typically like marvel or dc they have good stuff, but rarely great.

Shut and close stuff is almost always the great stuff

Watchmen?

Great stuff.

Image is better at producing great stuff

Dark horse even though they have EU stuff mostly, better at producing great stuff.

Dc Black label

Max

Try to mimic them, sometimes succeed, sometimes don't.

Smaller universes more shut and close, the better.

I get excited for the new Hellraiser tv show.

I get real excited at a Novel idea, a novel story.

I'm definitely guilty of paying more cash towards something that's not that though, as is most.

Nostalgia, expecting something in the same saga to be more adventurous then something that has by now been ripped off and altered time and time again is never going to happen, but we as humans fucking love it.

I think the Mandalorian show is going to change quite a bit in season 3. They said they will pump a lot more money into it next year, bringing it more to movie level. Might also affect runtime. Still, I prefer 30+ mins of decent entertainment over 60-90+ mins with nothing relevant happening.

Update/double-post special:

After the last episode of season 2, I am finally convinced for good. Disney CAN do Star Wars. They did it before with Rogue One, and The Mandalorian as a show has always been good.

With this season finale however, it's reaching a whole new dimension. The series hasn't been holding back much regarding fan service in the past already, but this time they went where nobody even could possibly hope they would ever go. It's epic, it's touching, it's amazing. And it's a considerable redemption/apology for the messed-up sequel trilogy we got to watch and cursed so much about in the last few years. Those movies were rushed, inconsistent and a disgrace in what they did with their characters.

This show is nothing like that. Not at all. Sure, often it's a bit repetitive, Mando doing planet hopping, searching for this or that, but you are interested and care for it. And Grogu is also playing a part in it, of course. And then all these references to the old movies, sometimes even non-canonic stuff like novel or even game references (which actually makes them kinda canonic after all). This last one was a hammer, though, and tbh I am not sure if they can top it off later on. But considering how many millions they are going to invest into each episode next year, I guess they'll find a way.

If you want to criticize something, it's that it started as a rather independent thing. In a big galaxy where anything could happen. But they had to involve known locations like Tattooine and cross paths with the Jedi. By now it's tied at least into Clone Wars, Rebels and even the classic movie trilogy, not to mention the "external" (non-canonic) stuff. Many will like it, but there will also be some who will claim Disney failed to deliver something more original again, with too many references to the old times. However, that's what fans like and want. I am not complaining, either.

Now the question is just if all those spinoffs that have been announced can be similarly good.

I am in that boat and was extremely disappointed with the reveal. I'd rather it be more separate from the main series and primarily exist in its own little capsule.

But it is what it is.

Looking at the response in this forum alone, and on twitter and the rest of the internet, I am in the minority here so I'll take it in stride for now.

However that face cgi was god awful.

Admittedly, they had already done better de-aging before. For example with Michael Douglas at the beginning of the first "Ant-Man" movie. That one was almost completely convincing. They even got the eyes right, which is often neglected and usually one of the main reasons why the illusion doesn't work.

And yeah, I can understand why some folks out there are rolling their eyes. It's a huge galaxy, but it's always about the Skywalkers. Well, in this case it kinda had to be since Luke was pretty much the only real Jedi left at that time (dunno if you can count Ahsoka since she left the order afaik).

Anyway, two things became clear:
1) Disney learned some lesson regarding what fans want to see.
2) When Mark Hamill says he's done playing a character, take it with a grain of salt. If the way he is presented is good (and the money is right, we can presume), exceptions are made.

Anyway, I am glad they did it since it kinda overwrites the crappy Luke scripting in the sequel movies (even though the series is set before the movies - what counts is the last thing you watch, basically). However, they have to be careful now not to overdo it. As awesome as it was, if they do it again, people are prepared and will expect more. They should avoid losing focus on what the show is all about (hint: not the Jedi).

This was that Rogue One moment we needed and I love everyone involved for doing this. Never thought it'd happen and they freaking did it. Fans needed this after the travesty that was the assassination of his character in the sequels.

yeah, i don't know how someone thought that was good enough. i guess they couldn't borrow Marvel de-aging machine.

It's pretty clearly not de-aging. It's more of a DeepFake. It's fine for what it is.

So according to Jon Favreau, Boba Fett is an entirely new series and NOT Mandalorian Season 3. He says Boba Fett will come first in December 2021 (this is what Kathleen Kennedy was referring to when she said "the next chapter" after Mandalorian season 2 on the Investor Day presentation) and then Mandalorian season 3 will follow it with Din Djarin again. Which is cool. Apparently Robert Rodriguez is one of the producers of Book of Boba Fett.

Yeah after seeing the last season of the mandalorian I can say that my cold dead heart regained a little bit of hope for this series.

LEAKS AND RUMORS AHEAD: PUT ON YOUR TINFOIL HAT.

An interesting possible leak:

Although this is a rumor, I want to say that Doomcock (snrk) has a good track record in regards to star wars leaks and predictions that eventually turn out to be confirmed one way or another. So I think as much biased against Disney and SJWs as he is his track record is good enough to deserve some attention.

I would also suggest seeing videos about the current situation of Lucas Film from Midnights Edge. They also have a good track record in analysis and rumors related to both Star Wars and Star Trek. here is the latest one:

Honestly I would recommend both channels. They make good content IMO.

Big fan of all those Fandom Menace channels. Great content, good people, fair and balanced perspectives even if they are labelled as haters and instigators unfairly. Mighnight's Edge, Nerdrotic, Geeks & Gamers, even Robert Meyer Burnett. Echo Base Network, ThatStarWarsGirl, Comic Artist Pro Secrets (Ethan Van Sciver). Love watching their videos. And they're highly entertaining as well. I don't agree with every viewpoint some of them hold (and they all have differing opinions on many aspects), but they're good people.

Ethan Van Sciver said this today during a video and I felt like sharing it: "I am a moisture farmer. The moisture that I farm is SJW tears. So I can relate to Luke Skywalker; I always have."
