I read this may be a BIOS issue especially with older computers. Alignment of a USB stick partition can throw things. I discovered also that syslinux can be very picky. I discovered wiping and creating new USB partition with the Windows application Paragon worked. I have no idea why.

That might be the case too. I've had Dell Inspiron laptops come in that throw the same error off a DVD install, and booting into Parted Magic and creating a new partition table seems to fix it. Windows Vista and 7 have a pretty lousy installer, IMO. Too finicky and much slower than 8, 10, or PedOS (Linux).

Only problem with Windows 10 is the inability to completely shut down the telemetry, otherwise it's the natural upgrade for those on Windows 7 and a must for those on Windows 8.1.

Still, I don't get some of the complaints about Windows 10.

I see people trying to kill Cortana process and it doesn't make any sense. Cortana is part of the system, it will be there regardless of what you wish and the reason is so you can easily turn it back on should you choose to paint a huge red target mark on your back.

All of the main Windows 10 spy stuff can be opted out. It's not obvious during the installation but most companies these days force you into accepting their crap anyway. MS isn't doing anything different, it's following an ugly trend.

Things that suck about Windows 10:

1) Further dumbing down, it has a modern interface for config app which hides the Control Panel unless you really need it.

2) Automatic updates.

3) Residual telemetry even after opting out of all the data collection stuff.

And that's it IMO.

Well, as long as Windows 10 is installed on a computer you no longer have full control over your system. Microsoft owns your computer not you, you're just a user.

I've recently come across an issue with upgrading a clean activated 8.1 OEM install to Windows 10 which fails to activate because it can't upgrade my product key even though its a genuine OEM key as confirmed by Microsoft. Microsoft's solution was that they would blacklist my current embedded OEM Windows 8 BIOS key and re-issue me a new retail Windows 10 key but I could never downgrade with my old product key after that point. I wasn't crazy about that option so i opted out of the Windows 10 upgrade. I figure since the Activation in Windows 10 doesn't work 100 percent what else is still broken?

So, has anyone tested the method of reverting to Win7/8 after the 30 day limit? Apparently they're saying you can just rename the appropriate backup folders so that Windows can't delete them and renaming them back at a future point will allow you to revert even after the 30 days. Or does Windows keep a memory and not let you either way? Is deleting these folder the only measure it takes to ensure a 30-day limit?

Problems with MS keys seem par for the course. I hear a lot of these complaints.

I'm lucky most of the time not to come across these bugs but it doesn't mean they don't exist.

I'm still on windows 7, but I hear occasionally that some cool older gaming stuff has trouble working on Windows 10. Or at least I've seen anecdotal posts of that sort of thing.

there could be an issue, but i haven't experienced any eduke or polymost rendering problems - but then again, i haven't played that much either - just a couple maps.

if there was a problem it might have been caused by the issues win 10 was having when it initially was launched and wasn't playing well with vendor drivers. those seem to be ironed out for the most part.

I've discovered that my stupid webcam on my monitor doesn't have Windows 10 drivers. That's lame. The only other one I have is an old Microsoft webcam which wasn't even really supported for Windows 7.

GWX Control Panel will permanently fix your Windows 10 icon. I run the BlockWindows script first to remove the telemetry, then run that.

So I've been having problems with administrative privileges lately. For some reason I stopped being able to save to the root C folder (that's just one example). No matter what I did or what solutions I found online that I tried it wouldn't allow me access. Some research led me to believe I had a corrupted account. No idea how that happened. I was able to write to these folders fine beforehand. Probably a stupid Windows update. Finally I tried taking the entire drive C and forcing all its files and subfolders to transfer ownership to Administrators (which it already was, but for some reason it worked...partially. I still can't write to the drive but I can copy and delete, at least some files). After that happened, the Windows 10 apps stopped working again. Calc, Image viewer, the freaking Start menu, the notification panel the opens on the side, the volume control, the network options, and any right-click menu on the taskbar. I can right-click on the start menu which brings up that menu where I can access control panel and sign out options, but everything else doesn't function.

This happened to me before and I tried some fancy tricks with powershell to verify my files (which fails as some are corrupted) and DISM commands dont work either. It's looking like I need to do a full Windows refresh or reinstall, which I don't want to do. Any other options? This is driving me crazy. The Start menu, calc, and image viewer specifically being "apps" is the dumbest thing I've ever heard of. It seems a number of people online are having these issues but there is no universal answer. Come on, Microsoft. Your stuff is breaking. Fix it, seeing as we're forced into these Windows updates.

here's the anal thing - when you run the DISM command (as administrator) - you HAVE to have the windows firewall service running. Otherwise you'll get a bunch of errors and it won't fix shit.

I don't know every service that DISM command is dependent upon, but if you get errors again you should scroll back up to the lines in red - that line or a line or two above it will tell you something like, "X service not found", or if iit can't find a file, which file it is.

As far as your C: drive, it sounds like either a corrupted account, something went wrong with the account permissions, or something in the windows system is broke.
Make a new user (admin) account - if you can read, write, delete, etc to C: with the new account - then the original account is bad or has messed up permissions.
If it's still acting wrong, then the windows install is probably corrupt.

The file writing is a problem, but I'm more annoyed with zero Win10 apps running at all. My Firewall is apparently already on (I thought I disabled it...). Here's specifically what's happening:

1) I run

It runs and then suddenly ends and drops back to the prompt after a while and gives no error information. No red lines, no nothing.

It gets to 20%, stays there for several minutes, then shoots to 100% and dumps this error:

I've never been able to get that cleanup-image /restorehealth to work. I've tried online, i've tried pointing it to the specific source, i've tried using a clean windows 10 image as a source.

The Get-AppXPackage should have run for around 5 minutes and spit out a bunch of lines of what it was "updating". If it didn't do that, it might be related to your read/write privileges on C: being broke - it can't write the repairs to the system.


Have you tried making another account and seeing if everything works properly in the new account?

Run:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /source:WIM:F:\Sources\Install.wim:1 /LimitAccess

(where F: would be the location the ISO is mounted - change it to what ever your drive letter is)

I installed from an ISO actually when the Windows update upgrade option didn't work for me. The only reason I haven't tried this option is because I also read that the official ISO has corrupted components inside it. I had forgotten about the option, though. I'll try it.

It does spit out lines of what it's updating, but it doesn't last 5 minutes and it doesn't leave any messages after it's done. No red at all.

Never, and I mean NEVER, do this. Many of those interface apps (including the Start Menu) rely on folder junctions to work, and if you take ownership of them the junctions are broken. There's a reason those files are owned by SYSTEM or TrustedInstaller.

It sucks that you can't do it but it's how it is.
