So far it looks like this is what DNF should have been. And I never expected id tp be the one to get it right.

I dunno why but that same thought popped in my mind during my time with this game.

I also find it hilarious how George fucking Broussard critisized the developers of not respecting the classic doom source material because of a texture being placed upside down in one easter egg that emulates a level from classic doom

The same guy that halofied/codofied his own creation is accusing id of not respecting their source material.

I have been watching video on and off today of Single Player... between playing through DooM and DooM 2.
It might be hard to quantify, but the elements of DooM that I like are in this 2016 game... a bit changed or I am going to say "evolved". I am very comfortable with this game as a very good attempt to mix current gen engine gaming with the original DooM gameplay.

Is like a relationship with a crazy chic... the other stuff is easily tolerable, if not un-noticed, if all of what you want is there. Sure I have seen some stuff I didn't care for, or might be indifferent about, but more than enough of what I enjoyed about DooM/DooM 2 seems to be there.

Can't wait to get a PS4.

He didn't codified Duke3d and didn't include original parts of classic levels in non-representative and lazy state. So yeah, his point is perfectly fine.

Yeah but that's clearly because COD/halo wasn't around back then so of course it can't emulate something that doesn't exist. Also, the Duke franchise hadn't been around long enough or was necessarily successful enough for there to be any benefit from putting in easter-eggs of older Duke game areas. Not to mention the previous games were all 2D platformers, so it would be very difficult and not very practical to put older areas in the game anyway.

Are we really trying to justify putting upside textures to emulate the classic game feel is right...?

I'm trying to validate Psyrgery's point that George Broussard doesn't have any right to criticize other franchises for not respecting their source material.

I wasn't talking about duke3d emulating Duke1-2. I was talking about DNF doing that with Duke3d. He didn't codified Duke3d's XBLA port for example or something like that.

I love it how in the context of video games people can legitimately make statements such as that, whereas otherwise they'd be committed to a mental institution. :)

Well, that's your opinion.

In my opinion, changing a whole formula (regenerative health, two weapons limit, linear levels, shitty turret and vehicle sections) to make your game more appealing to the console audience is way worse than placing a texture upside down on an easter egg for nostalgia purposes.

To each his own, I guess.

I'm just saying that its not analogues. What GB did with DNF was a gisgrace, no less, but it isn't applicable to implementation of original doom levels in Doom.

DNF for me was a fun piece of entertainment five years ago, I'd rather have it than not have it. The style of the campaign was more like Half-Life 2 than anything oddly enough, and it had a lot of jumping and fun touches. And a genuinely great pinball machine! But your taste on DNF aside, it's odd to me that it gets brought up and compared (as a whipping boy) pretty much all the time. I get it, but ah well, I'm happy that game got released, rough edges and all. But sure, naturally I'd love a Doom 2016 "style" Duke game, in that it would have no weapon limit, larger less linear maps at times etc. But of course, harkening back to and expanding on Duke 3D would actually be a bit different than Doom 2016, and would be even more ambitious because of all the cool details and varied environments we'd expect. I'd love to see that some day.

So to me, saying "what DNF should have been", that's five years ago. I'd say hey here are some pointers a new Duke game could take today. For me DNF is more memorable and I like better than id's game Rage, which is another 2011 game. So that would be a more fair comparison.

But anyhoo, I am loving DOOM, this game is delivering the goods in abundance! I love the atttitude of the Doomguy, the way he does stuff like punch the cute little upgrade robot, great touches. Rip and tear!

I just finished the campaign and it was fucking awesome! My Game of the year so far.
Took me 12 hours on Ultra Violent mode while looking for some secrets and the glory kill on the final boss was a true "FUCK YEAH!" moment of gaming!

I missed a bunch of secrets but those will be for my Nightmare runs, the game felt so damn refreshing and slaughtering the demons with that arsenal was just so satisfying.

Moving on to Snapmap.

Bulletstorm is closer to what DNF should've been, and that released just a couple months earlier. Bulletstorm even had the fucking duke boot whenever you wanted to use it!

I beat Doom yesterday, really enjoyed. Like Mobilemux I beat it on Ultra Violence and will beat it on Nightmare and finding all collectibles, then to try an ultra nightmare run.

Some thoughts:

But it still had weapon limits, corridor levels and you weren't even able to jump when you wanted (which made the corridor style even worse). They story was also 'meh', IMHO, and had the same ending as the other EPIC games before.

But do you disagree it was more Duke than DNF?

Wow this game is either 60 euros --> 69 $ on steam or above 70 $ for a physical version here in Denmark. I am glad to hear that the game is good but I will wait for a heavy discount and maybe get it for my xbox one since my PC is basically.. Useless for the DOOM PC requirements. God damn I feel cheated man why the hell does AU/EU area 1 always get buttfucked by steam. I mean come on. I am tired of paying 10-20% more than people from the US, it is not fair!

I disagree, found Bulletstorm not that great. Plus the level design in that was pretty much just run in a straight line, and the lack of a jump button (had the baked in hook thingy), and in general just overall mediocrity. But tis personal taste.

I do disagree, and it was sure less funny than DNF. But why is everyone comparing everything to DNF anyways? I dun't get it.

I think all the swearing is actually cringe-worthy. I'm not averse to swearing but it was so frequent that it sounded absurd to me.

I actually share your opinion, PsychoGoatee. I enjoyed DNF for what it was. But you've got to admit a modern KILLER Duke game was missing in the franchise and DNF didn't fill the void that was begging to be filled. Doom seems to fill that void for Doom as DNF should have for Duke. That's all. So yes, I will continue to compare because I care.

I'm just on a time traveler kick I guess, but remember how this DOOM game had the cancelled "Call of Doom" build? If it had been released in 2011 or even by 2013 or so, it would've been a much more generic and worse received game than DNF. Just food for thought.

But thankfully they were able to start over and we got this awesome DOOM game today! I'm playing it right now, love it, combat is glorious. I'm savoring the flavor, only playing a few hours a day, so I'll probably take 4 or 5 days for my first playthrough.

This game absolutely shits on COD and Halo with its variety and gunplay. Go out and buy it. Now. It's worth paying full price for.

I recall those dreadful concept artworks with genericicity up the yin yang. They should have dropped DNF the same way they dropped that Doom 4. The only difference is nobody was looking forward to Doom 4 as much as DNF because it didn't have the same history.

I want to buy this game......but I just cannot justify it with the current price tag and my lack of ability to play it.....

also with my little lightsaber hobby project going on

SOON.

Spent 6 hours making a map on Snapmap only to find out it doesn't function as intended due to the logic being bugged and broken, others have reported the same thing, what a waste of time.

Also the fact that you're stuck with the 2 weapon limit in Snapmap is even more shitty, they better patch the weapon wheel in.

I'm quite upset myself I ordered collectors awhile ago yet I haven't even received my package. But making a map for a certain classic Doom has held me off. I am starting to learn that I kind of like classic Doom mapping actually.

*snip*

Kind of the reverse, they should have gone with the 'original' DNF and dropped the revamp. :)
