Shadow Warrior (2013) Thread  "New Shadow Warrior Game Announced"

Sadly I would have to agree with that. Especially since the best they could come up with for the characters was spindly looking weak ones for the second game. Some of the levels like the hotel sections where OK but as a whole Blood 2 was a disappointment after the original game. In my opinion it wasn't until lithtech jupiter that Monolith was capable of making decent looking 3D models as well.

I remember in 1998 they paid me 300 pounds to write a positive review forn one magazine in Poland - but they choose the other guy review which got published.

Monolith had to push out Blood 2 in less than a year on a completely new engine. Definitely made some mistakes right out of the gate by moving it to the near future. The setting, occult themes and playful horror tone is the best best thing about Blood. The first game was in development for years like Shadow Warrior and Duke 3D - probably why it was so awesome (obviously along with a very talented team). Jay Wilson talked about Blood 2 a few years while promoting Diablo 3 ago saying it was a bloody tough project. I wish Monolith would make another single player shooter
(Jace Hall posted this neat interview with Craig Hubbard a couple of days ago about NOLF's origins and obstacles).

I don't like what I've seen of the new monster designs.
The originals had character they looked strong and interesting, like a formidable enemy.
Shadow Warrior 2013 monster designs are uninspired.
These guys look like a weak version of the Halo Flood with asian amour on, seriously what is going on with their arms?

Let's get rid of the ugly faces and turn them to ugly masks instead!
And those uzi's they used to hold in their hands that made them seem to be more than idiot monsters without a bit of humanity in them, let's get rid of them too and turn their hands into mutated claws that look generic as fuck...
Aww and while we're at it, let's remove their pants too because this will make them more interesting???

The devs of this game were clearly allowed to stray as much as they wanted from the original, otherwise I don't understand why they couldn't have made the monsters match the old ones a bit more?
What was wrong with the old ones?
I personally think the old ones were one of the few memorable elements of this game that people might remember from the old game.
These days it seems to be a fad among dev studios to remake old games and fuck around with them until they become unrecognizable.

Let's just accept this as whatever it will be and mod it afterwards.

Do we know for sure that there will be mod tools?

I refuse to buy this, it might give the developers the idea that I actually support what they are doing. Companies will never listen to your words, but they might listen to your wallet... people never seem to learn this.

Okay, you've sold me. Forget about all the substantive gameplay criticisms and lackluster footage. A picture of swords is enough to get me to buy a game.

Edit: Mr. Tibbs, I was being sarcastic.

No. But I know for 100% sure a dev said they plan* on releasing mod tools in fall (that was when the release date of the game was still summer instead of fall). The problem is, that it was a comment on a post on facebook which got buried beneath 45325435534 posts about the key for the free SW-classic on Steam not working.

*) which could be either their real plan, a plan if the game does well or pure marketing

But aside from that you'd totally buy this game, right?

This game is shit and I refuse to buy, cause I don't want to give developers idea that I actually support shit.

I am pretty sure a few people and oldschool-FPSers I know and trust will buy it. From their opinion and description I will decide if I buy it too.

And no, those aren't the people that said "Oh, DNF was quite OK."

But in any case I will wait and see how chances are that mod tools actually will be released.

As hard as it can be for me to admit it, this professionally built remake of an fps classic that is shadow warrior, seems to look less tempting to try than that amateur ROTT remake that Fresch is doing...
What conclusions do we draw for this?

Developers don't seem to know what made those game work in the first place. You can't start saying things like "it's an old school fps, like Serious Sam", because that's not really old school in the same way Build games are, they are just bloody wave shooters, like Smash TV in first Person. They also can't compare it to Doom as Doom has complex mazes to navigate, these wave shooters don't, while Doom had waves of monsters they were within the mazes. If this game is just another wave shooter I might get it on sale in the future if at all, as these game can be mildly entertaining. Whether people want to acknowledge it or not Interceptor seem to be the only ones who get the idea and are sticking to the plan of making a real old school twitch shooter complete with an approach to level design that may get your brain running in a gear other than first. I do like the look of the sword play though.

Oh shit I am going down because I contradict troll hunter himself - but You know that the business model regading Shadow Warrior doesn't actually differ that much from what Interceptor does with ROTT? It is basically one room in Warsaw where they coordinate all their outside work with people around the world. As I remember there are actually less than 10 people working full-time - rest is just contracts from USA, Russia, Slovakia and Hungary (as far as I know). They are working outside of corporate hydra, they are self-publishers - they could be called professionals because they already have some titles published unlike Interceptor, but in terms of how video game companies go they are green as caterpillar guts.

That wasn't a contradiction. That wasn't even a cheap shot. Mr.Deviance was speaking to the difference in production quality and polish, not the difference in company dynamics.

And I will not agree with You on that. There is not so much difference in pure manhours spent as You may think. ROTT has full-blown levels while is SW a rail shooter with illusioned open but really closed linear levels. You may think about the graphics as seemingly better in SW? This is just a case of simple gpu-eating shader tricks - nothing astounding since the time of tenebrae mod for Q1. Eitherway if I would make a game directed to this die-hard hardcore old-timers the last thing I would spend my money will be cutting edge graphics. Hotline Miami (from the same publisher) proved that funds can be put somewhere alse instead of manhours used for painting dimples on ass textures no one cares or asks.

Do you mean visually?

Because seriously, the in-game rendered footage of the trailer looked stunning. Heaps of us didn't know if the dead guy in the trailer was actually real or not.

I think the game looks really promising. It's understandable that a lot of people are annoyed that it bears little resemblance to the original, but that happens all the time in games (with mixed results). I think this new market of independent mid-tier shooters is really exciting. SW doesn't looks like anything else out there in the big retail space. I still would love another brand new shooter in the vein of Duke 3D, Sin or Blood. Maybe if games like Shadow Warrior and ROTT are successful, more studios might give it a go.

The enemies on the reboot pic remind me me more of Zeno Clash than Shadow Warrior.

And about the game itself, it wouldn't be so bad if they didn't called it Shadow Warrior, because as most people said before, it has almost nothing in common with the original, but the thing that really pisses me off is when people call games of this style of gameplay like Painkiller or Serious Sam "Old-School shooters" when they are clearly not, because of the way those games play, don't get me wrong, because i enjoy those games, but saying things like that just doesn't make sense to me.
