They didn't say "like serious sam with swords", just that it's in the vein of games like Serious Sam, Painkiller and Duke 3D.
The only similarities between Serious Sam and Painkiller are that you get to kill big hordes of enemies in order to progress to the next segment of the level which won't open it's locked door until you have killed every last one of the enemies from that area.
But even them, Painkiller and Serious Sam have vastly different ambients that can never be confused with each other.
I personally like Serious Sam games and they are memorable to me but Painkiller is an all time favorite which I absolutely love and I still play it to this day and I even got the HD remake for unreal engine 3 called Painkiller:
Hell and
Damnation which surprisingly is working great after a few patches and really does manage to be a great HD remake of the old game provided you put up with the bullshit of also buying some of the most popular remade levels as part of DLC...
As for Duke 3D being in the same league with Serious Sam and Painkiller? Why?
I see absolutely no similarities between Painkiller and Duke 3D in gameplay.. NONE AT ALL!
There are absolutely no similarities between Duke 3D and Serious Sam games either...
The only little tie between Duke 3d and Serious Sam is found between the characters themselves and the fact that Serious Sam has some Duke Nukem Forever jokes throughout the series and that's where the similarities between Duke 3d and Serious Sam stop.
If you really wanted to add another game to the list of Painkiller and Serious Sam, you could have added Will Rock which shares a lot of similarities to Serious Sam.
Even Doom shares more similarities than Duke 3d does simply because in Doom you fight giant hordes of enemies while in Duke 3d you don't.
It's pretty easy to notice that this new Shadow Warrior game shares absolutely nothing with the old game besides names of some characters and the name of the game itself.
I'm sad to say it but this new Shadow Warrior reboot has nothing original going for it.
I would say that the sword mechanics are something slightly interesting but after I played gmod in the past and had some fun with some custom weapons among which there were also some pretty nicely animated and coded swords, I can no longer get excited at this...
From every gameplay video that I've seen of this game, it does seem to strongly indicate that it feels exactly like a serious sam game clone that revolves around asian themed levels.
The graphics are also mediocre by today's standards, so I'm pretty sure that I will not buy this game at all, not even for collection purposes.
It looks like it's going to be a game that will get bought by Serious Sam obsessed fans which I am not sure are that many these days.
