Roland SC-55 Music Packs  "Updates 'n stuff"

My SC-55 music packs for Duke3d, its expansions, and Rise of the Triad are now all available again (the links in my signature were outdated for a while). I've uploaded them all to my website server for your downloading pleasure. The new updated links are in my sig. I wouldn't want it to stay this way forever, though. Perhaps someday I'll put together a small website and apply for hosting here at Duke4. But this'll do for now.

Also, I will be making more SC-55 music packs for Blood, Shadow Warrior, Lameduke, and other Build games in the future sometime in the coming months. And for fun I'm also going to record all those beta MIDI tracks that Lee Jackson and others have made.

Again, updated links are in my sig.

I'm glad we'll finally get SC-55 versions of all those MIDIs I sent you.

BTW, the only LameDuke MIDI not from ROTT is Brown Eyed Girl, which is a bit of a joke.

By "all those beta tracks", the only ones I can think of are the beta Whomp, which you've done, Super Fnord, and Dark Matter.

I also have beta tracks from Shadow Warrior and Blood. At least, that's how they're labeled.

Do you have plans for any other games? It's just so nice to hear MIDI music the way it's meant to be heard after all this time  So much better then this emulated crap and sound bank stuff sound cards do these days.

Like what? I supposed I could do Doom/Heretic/Hexen and those. I'd have to research exactly how to record those, though, as they aren't in MIDI format but MUS I think? And I'm wary of using a converter to MIDI format because I'm afraid it'll lose all the GS MIDI information in favour of a plain General MIDI conversion.

I've heard RC-55s of Doom, but the dumbass cut off the first few seconds of each song.

What do you use now to play the MIDIs? Winamp's MIDI plugin supports MUS if you enable it in the input plugin options.

I have WinAmp but who knows if it correctly transcribes the GS information. The Doom soundtracks aren't just General MIDI, they were written specifically for the Sound Canvas (probably taking advantage of the extra instruments that GS has over GM). I've been using Sonar to playback each song and record them.

Could you do the SW ones that don't have CD-audio upgrades as FLAC and torrent them?

Yeah, I can. But keep in mind that the CD versions of those tracks were made with the SC-88 and therefore sound better than any SC-55 recording I make. Which SW tracks aren't on the CD? Won't be able to torrent, though.

Currently, by request, I'm in the middle of recording the two Descent soundtracks for the music packs for DXX-Rebirth. So it might take a bit.

MusicallyInspired:

Yeah, I am terribly sorry about the dead musicpack links.

The problem was that I had some issues with a friend of mine who decided not to be friendly anymore and he basically rendered my server useless.
I had to redo it with a new server image and forgot to restore those packs up again.
You should have just emailed me or something and I would've had those up and running again
Glad to hear that you got to host them yourself.

If you still need hosting help then I can still provide space for those and do a quick page for easy access like previously.

Again, sorry for forgetting those :)

No problem, man. It's all good. If you like you can download the packs again from my links and upload them to your site as mirrors. I'll add the mirror links to my sig once you provide them to me.

E1L01.MID, E1L04.MID, and THEME.MID have CD versions, the others don't.

Do you think the VSC-MP1 is/would be any good?

No. The VSC plain sucks. It's a reasonable approximation, but you can definitely tell the difference between this and an actual Sound Canvas.

Here are those two Shadow Warrior tracks FLACed. The rest of them I'll get done as well for the regular OGG pack.

Darn it! It still worked yesterday.

I think that I will need to start changing my host shortly due to ever increasing troubles..
Sucks since everything was so well a year ago or so.. Oh well

http://82.203.213.8/sc55/ - No domain name, that seems to work for me.

Shadow Warrior music pack up. Link is in my sig. Beta tracks are missing. I'm going to put all beta tracks from all games in their own pack later on.

Not to shit on anyone's parade, but doing SC-55 packs for some games is rather random, the Duke and SW tracks were done with SC-55 because that's what they were composed with/for.

I know that's what Duke and SW were composed for that's why I recorded them. That's why I'm doing all these packs. Every other game I'm doing was also composed for the SC-55. Including Descent, Blood, Rise of the Triad, Doom, Doom 2, Heretic, Hexen, and any other games I'll decide on recording. I'm not doing them randomly at all.

Here's the Doom and Doom II music packs recorded from an SC-155.

My memory of these versions is hazy--they do not have any errors at the beginning.

Unfortunately, there is no Roland pack of Final Doom: TNT: Evilution (Plutonia recycled other music), let alone Heretic, Hexen, Strife, or Chex Quest.

Were there any other significant sound modules or whatever that were used popularly to write MIDI music back then, or were the sound canvases the only things that were mainly used?

There might have been some Yamaha stuff.

Anyway, I now remember that "Intermission from DOOM" from that pack is cut off slightly in the beginning. Pisses me off. I just hacked together a quick fix for myself.
