A new custom enemy from down in the hell pits deep below the cemetary in my Graveyard mod.

The pic was taken in Mapster's 2D mode. The pic has length and width. 2D :P

Let's just ignore the height of your orthographic view then. Afterall, I see 3D tesseracts all the time.

That looks incredibly hard to use... Not that the regular Quake editor isn't.

Quite the contrary actually, its really easy to use.

Dragging the mouse anywhere makes a block then using keys on the keyboard allow you to manipulate it.
Holding Shift and clicking on the face of the block allows you to drag that face around.
Pressing R rotates the block.
The ALT Key will move the block up and down on the Z Axis remaining its shape.
The CTRL Key allows you to select multiple "blocks".

Here is something I made using the editor after the first day of usage:

Yeah, I took some partial design elements from the E3 1998 video but 95% of the layout is made up as I was just testing out each feature on different buildings.

It's actually not anything Duke related because it's just an example of what the editor can do. I might use it for Jack Hammer though.

As I've finished my map Frauenstein, my next project is a UFO map.

Someone should make a bunch of maps based on underwater cities :P

Someone is making an underwater map like that. I think we can all agree that whoever it is, is a very talented mapper who hasn't released anything for a while Posted Image

Mikko C, I'm flattered that you think so highly of my skills. But I'm not planning any underwater maps. :P

I for one like the idea of rebuilding destroyed city/station maps.

I'm not working on this personally as far as programming it goes, but I am overseeing it as it is intended to be an official version of EDuke32. Pretty early stages yet.

I never understood the appeal for those pad-screen things. They're just useless trendy gimmicky items. And why would I want to play Duke3D (or any game for that matter) with such shitty controls that even hide parts of the screen with your fingers as you're playing?

Are you talking about tablets or iPhone-type "smart phones" or both? Smart phones and tablets can be extremely useful, kinda like laptops but a lot more convenient. But I too find the idea of playing a first-person shooter on a touch-screen device very unappealing.

I guess smartphones have quite a lot of neat programs which can be useful IRL (like being able to check maps when you're on the road or whatever; or the yellow pages if you're in town and suddenly need to look for something particular); but I meant tablets. I don't see the points of tablets. For the vast majority they are used at home to watch movies or videos or to go on facebook or browse the internet, even though those people already had a computer and a TV to begin with; and if you want to use them for a more "serious" use, you'd be getting a laptopt, not a tablet.

But laptops are too inconvenient: they have more stuff and require more hassle than most tablet users need.

I have an iPad 4 and I bought it primarily for university: lecture notes and assignment sheets and stuff so that I didn't have to print them off each time. And if I forgot to get them before I go in, I can just download them on the spot through wifi. What's not fantastic about that?

Of course it's also great for movies and general web browsing too.

What's not fantastic about it is that for the same price, or less, you could have had a more powerful laptop which can do just that and much more. My point is those things have no new use. They are being sold simply on hype and trend alone and because "They look cute xD !"

Future history will prove you wrong. Smart phones and tablets will proliferate at the expense of laptops.

What happens in the future cannot be used as evidence. There could easily exist a third technology that completely wipes smartphones or tablets of the market.

And MetHy has a good point, it's not just the cost but smartphones or tablets are not ergonomic. They can serve as a recreation, but are not pratical and will not replace "real" computers.

I'm not saying they're not popular, nor that they won't get more popular, so that's not proving anything I've said wrong. I'm just saying they're pointless and simply trendy and gimmicky, which you have yet to prove wrong.

That said, I heard somewhere that apparently in ten years time or so they predict that smart devices and touch tablets will be the norm and overtake the majority of the market over PCs and laptops. For the average consumer, not us geeks and nerds.

Uh, trends can only be proven in retrospect.

On the contrary, in many situations tablets and smart phones are a lot more practical.

I don't have to prove anything since you never bothered to back up your initial claim with any evidence whatsoever.

Playing a FPS on a touchscreen actually works a bit better than you might think if you've never tried it. I was able to get through all of DOOM's Knee Deep in the Dead on Ultra-Violence on an old iPod touch years ago... it was plenty of fun. It's a great way to pass time when you might be stuck somewhere without a "real" computer, etc.

The fact is that most people only go on line to check their email and find out what their friends are up to on Facebook. You can do that just fine on a tablet and it's much more portable, lighter and smaller than a laptop. You can even touch type on the damned things.

Unless you are actually doing some kind of work or are a dedicated PC gamer, you don't need a PC. Once the great technically illiterate public figure this out (and it's happening as we speak) then it's all over. Hardware costs will go up as computers go back to being "business machines" rather than general consumer products.

I don't think tablets will ever completely take over, laptops and desktops will probably be used well into the future by business and consumers. I mean there are just somethings that each of them do better.
