Just for the record, are you under the impression Gearbox made the single-player Duke Nukem Forever game? They didn't. I mean who knows how much was re-written or whatever after they got it, but it seemed like Tryptych (the 3DR guys) were finished up that game, while Gearbox got another team to make them multiplayer and port it. But either way, I already agreed with you, I said we'd like to see something like the 2001 trailer, yes. That said I'd rather see a game like DNF than a game like Zero Hour (kind of a generic Duke game though was fun enough), but that's all personal taste.

Definitely feel better soon by the way TerminX!

Triptych cobbled together the most completed elements of the game as of May 2009 and worked around it to deliver something playable. It was 3D Realms work that Gearbox and Triptych double teamed. I believe it was the Duke Nukem Forever launch panel where they were all talking about Duke Nukem Forever and how Broussard always insisted he was supposed to be more serious and everyones laughing while Broussard just looks miserable.

The definition of 'finished' when it comes to Duke Nukem Forever is extremely loose. The game was never finished, their development plan and what they were working on in May of 2009 will never see the light of day. What was delivered was elements that were most complete with a narrative hastily written around it which is why I'm always salty about the old quotes of Randy saying they saved Duke Nukem Forever and delivered 3D Realms vision. Yeah, I'm sure 3D Realms vision consisted of a half dozen guys in someones living room desperately trying to put together something that could be called a game after throwing away any direction the development had so Scott/George could escape a lawsuit.

I suppose it's in the past now but it goes without saying that Duke Nukem Forever had a large influence from Gearbox - the marketing was in part what themselves and 2K came up with, the cover art, everything that presented Duke as the character he is in that title was up to them and they released a trailer about shit and tits not to mention one of the crappiest cover arts ever. I'll play the optimist here and just hope that lessons were learned from the backlash.

It's kind of interesting how we say a lot of the same stuff, just through a lense of positive or negative, depenending on how we feel about DNF I guess. I've mentioned how I think it's very cool that those guys kept working on the game from their homes, and Gearbox brought them in, and managed to successfully finish DNF. And sure yes success is also relative and subjective, but it's cool to me. I agree the cover art could be better, though I have the Balls of Steel edition which has cool art. As for trailers, I thought the "Invaders Must Die" (Prodigy song) launch trailer for DNF was very very cool. We all have our opinion on DNF, but we both agree that it would be cool for another Duke game to try to balance that humor better with a more badass narrative.

As for the game we'll get, it'll probably be fairly similar to Duke 3D's fourth episode, Duke making jokes and pop culture references. We'll get to critiquing that when we get there, but personally I'm just happy to hear Jon St. John saying one liners and having new official maps to play Duke in.

Yeah I enjoyed that trailer also, it came off as fairly cool. I thought Duke Nukem Forever was fun, not gonna lie. I had a blast playing it but I was consistently bothered by the world itself and how the characters acted throughout the game.

I'm looking forward to this new episode, just holding the optimistic notion that they may have toned down the comedic elements that they pushed so hard for with DNF. At the very least it seems as if we'll get a new episode with some interesting maps but I'm hoping this leads to something new with Duke Nukem. I suppose we'll find out in a few days time...

I do think there are some reasons for hardcore Duke3d fans to pick this up, though I would probably violate some agreement or another by saying what those reasons are just yet. There is definitely one aspect to the new episode that anyone posting in this thread has yet to even come close to touching on.

I would guess that they got some of the former level designers to work on the episode. Seems easy enough to do given some of them work at Gearbox.

Level Credits

Allen Blum and Levelord did the maps for almost the entire game. Only episode 4 has work from anyone else, specifically E4L1, E4L10, E4L11 -> Randy Pitchford, E4L3 -> George Broussard, and E4L8 -> Keith Schuler.

The official level credits for The Birth are not accurate. It's been confirmed already that several levels are based on old beta maps that didn't make it to 1.3, meaning that parts of them must have been made by Allen Blum or Levelord, or someone else even.

I could be wrong but IIRC there was a beta of level It's Impossible dating from before Pitchord joined 3DRealms, yet he's the only one credited for that level.

This page at Infosuite lists the correct credits for E4 maps. It seems Levelord actually did 4 levels for The Birth, those being Shop-N-Bag, Pigsty, XXX-Stacy and Critical Mass. Allen Blum also did 4 levels for The Birth. Rest 3 levels were made by Randy.

Additionally Levelord claims at least three of the maps were partially or mostly done by him before he left. I don't know about It's Impossible, but Critical Mass (and I think Derelict too) was a beta map.

Honestly, I'm quite excited for this even if it turns out to be only a Duke 3D re-release. I've been itching to play through D3D again for a while, and this would be a perfect time to do so and see what they've done with it. And while the lighting doesn't look too stellar on the shots, I've always thought the Saturn version of 3D looked pretty damn good with its ambient lights.

Still, it would seem odd if the game is not actually released next week but only announced - a touched-up re-release (that has already been both promised, leaked and expected) does hardly seem worth a countdown that only leads up to an announcement and pre-order availability. That's such an Interceptor thing to do. :P Though, of course, something like this could/would also work as promotion for a "proper" Duke game if they have one in the works - I guess we'll know in a week.

I will laugh like crazy when Bombshell prequel which is basically fanmade work is going to be way better than Gearbox new episode.

Shame that good level design is going to be ruined by crap lighting and lazy sprites work and we have yet to see what kind of writing their episode has. I want to believe that these screenshots are just old and the game is still being made, but it's very difficult.

My prediction is that there will be no writing, the levels will follow no logical order (so it won't matter if you don't play them in sequence, just like the scenes in a porn) and there will be less interaction than vanilla Duke3D, which will be reduced to little more than shooting enemies.

If your brain tells you one thing and your heart tells you another, get rid of those silly doubts and listen to your brain.

Watch it be a great new addon episode with nothing wrong about it.

Also, you must've been smoking some mad shit if you think any of Duke 3D's four episodes had any writing or logical progression to them.

The original three episodes follow a clear path or story. I guess you haven't been paying attention as the game doesn't hit you in the face with it.

You are what's wrong with the gaming community.
There's literally no information about the game other than "new episode around the world" and the first thing you do is starting hating it.
I personally will wait untill friday, but I like the idea of new content for Duke 3D, No Resting For The Living was a excellent surprise and Sonic Mania seems to be shaping well, both Doom and Sonic also had a new modern game after the new "retro" content so that's not like there'll be nothing besides it if Gearbox follows these examples - I don't think buying the franchise just to re-release the same game over and over and bully small studios is a profitable endeavour.

As I had explained way back in 2009 when DNF screenshots had leaked, it's like an insurance policy, and you should too if you want to maximize your satisfaction. If it comes out and it sucks, you'll be satisfied that you were right. If it comes out and it's good, you'll be satisfied that you were wrong. Win-win.

So I'm guessing that's true. Allen Blum worked on DNF right up to the end so he probably worked on this. I haven't heard of what Levelord has been up to in a long time but maybe he did some too, meaning the original mappers worked on the new episode, which would go along with your statement that the people working on the maps know what they're doing.

Heh, this kind of toxicity is kind of just tiresome though.
Do you really need to shout people down and have 'proof' you were right?
It's like, just a step even further than pessimism.

I'm probably not as hardcore a fan as a bunch of you here, but I'm kind of excited for this rereleases.

Also: hi. I haven't posted here in years and when I did, I was a crappy teenager.

Did we play the same game? Every single level in Duke 3D perfectly transitions one to another. I can go on listing the examples but I'll just say, "You're not supposed to be here" - Level Lord.

Lee Jackson also followed the Duke Nukem Twitter account so I'm going to assume these might have something to do with Gearbox:

Actually a good idea would be having a tile of duke's Instagram account in a computer or mobile inside the game and then having Duke it self mocking at, and saying a one liner.

Holly crap Jackson making new music and/remixes for the episode!!?? :D

Looking at this thread reminds me of the Duke4-community everytime a new screenshot, a new traler, new gamplay footage or new info in textform for the new DooM was releasesd:

Basically everything looked and sounded awful: the colors, the demons' models, the music, the gameplay ... everything was horrible, not only for the DooM-franchise but an insult to gamers in general and DooM would of course be the worst game ever.

EDIT:
I don't know how the new episode will turn out. But everysthing is better for me than the same old art assets that had been used a million times over and over and over again. But, oh my god ... the gameplay also looks horrible because in that particular screenshot there is a battlelord on a pedestal with no cover in the image. So, of course the whole episode will be the worst thing ever released since the black death in medieval times.

Thank god Lee Jackson twittered something, because from the cover artwork it looked like the music would also completely suck.

The difference here being it's under direction of Randy Pitchford and Gearbox Software so negative assumptions are not without reason considering the past actions of Pitchford and co.
