Just stumbled upon "Quake II Facelift":

"This MOD greatly enhances the visulal quality of Quake 2, it upsamples all the game textures using the powerful Lanczos filter specially designed to increase the visual quality of the resampled image."

Posted ImagePosted ImagePosted Image

This (lanczos rendering) would be nice to have for other retro FPS shooters, or at least id tech ones!

an autoexec.cfg file in Quake 2's baseq2 folder, with "gl_round_down 0" in it's first line will do just this, without all the bullcrap.

This weapon's gattling is supposed to move when firing IIRC.

Bloodshot: How about some sort of faux ADS (aim down sight), which would rotate the sideways weapon model to a center position? Something for the COD generation, not me. :)

Disagree on "improved". I liked the old design better, it's too generic now. :\

Anyone here ever played Quake 4 ?

I love Quake 1 and 2... but never tried Quake 4 since it wasn't an id game... but I'm still curious: is it any good? And does it hold up ?

A lot of people hated Quake 4 but I liked it... more or less. There are a few vehicle and forced turret sections that are both terrible but otherwise it's a solid shooter.

I think Quake 4 is a really good shooter, one you'll like or even love if you liked Quake 2. Give it a shot, I liked it very much, especially after they turn you into SPOILER. :D

I had pretty good memories from playing it, but when trying to play it again (after just going through Doom 3 and Prey) I thought it was shit. Granted, I was never much of a Quake fan to begin with, but Quake 4 really came across as more CoD than Quake.

The vehicle sections, specifically the hovertank ride, I thought was the absolute peak of the game.

I still keep playing online something called q4max, a competition designed mod for quake 4. Improves various things about the mp.

As for sp of quake 4.. It's imo solid 2005 game. It has some secrets on maps but progression is linear and overall map layouts aren't non-linear where you could get lost. It's very much narrative driven but like Doom 3, it does it right unlike modern games where they shove it down your throat.

Thanks for all the comments. I'll give it a go then. Raven Software did make some great games: Hexen, Hexen 2 and the first Soldier of Fortune were great games back then (and still are). And I recently played Singularity and thought it was a surprise hit.

Eh, I thought it absolutely shoved it down your throat a bit... Especially compared to Doom 3. I mean, it's not as awful as I maybe made it sound when I called it "shit" but after Doom 3 it was a huge letdown IMO. There was lots of standing around and listening to soldiers, levels were both browngreen dull-looking and often superlinear; weapons other than the assault rifle lacked ammo etc.

Singularity was neat. If you haven't played their 2009 Wolfenstein game I highly recommend it. Singularity reminded me a lot of Wolfenstein, and I liked it even more. A lot of people seemed to hate/dislike it though.

I love scifi/futuristic themes, so that may be why I have absolutely no problem with Doom 3, Quake 4 or Prey (2006). I also know there is bit of standing around in it, but it's absolutely nothing compared to standing around of Wolfenstein New Order, Doom 4 or Shadow Warrior reboot. You have way more freedom in q4 than in these new games and imo the restriction that q4 has, is completely tolerable.

You need to conserve your ammo in it just like in older fps, often times you find more powerful ammo via secrets. Q4 does have mild secrets where by exploring the surroundings, you're being rewarded. The hidden areas aren't ofc as difficult to find as in Duke or similar games but they are still atleast hidden.

I can't stand Singularity. To me that game feels like a complete CoD clone and I'm sure Raven could've made a better game. Hell.. even the whole concept was ripped from a game that released couple years earlier called Timeshift (2007). Timeshift was made by same devs who are currently developing Quake Champions, aka Saber Interactive. Other than TS, Saber haven't made a notable game aside from those Halo remakes (I haven't had a console since PS2 generation, so I can't speak about the quality of these remakes). I despise regenerating health in fps games but Timeshift remains the only modern fps that has full regeneration and which I regardless of, very much do like. I like the game because it's one of the last games that was made without ironsights, sprinting, qtes, over focus on story.. and thus feels more my style.

As I said, I in a short timeframe played through Doom 3 (great), Prey (bloody fantastic 10/10!!!) and then went on to Quake 4... and in that company, it was a complete letdown. So those are the games I directly compared it to at this time. I've played it through before, some years ago, but this time around I just couldn't keep myself going after a few levels. It did remind me of Cod and Halo... and also of cheapish indie Unreal 3-fps:es... Maybe in another context it would have stood up better, like if I actually had played Cod first  but compared to Doom 3 and Prey every room felt like a fucking chore.

But, as I said before, I was never really a Quake fan - especially not a Quake II fan - so some nostalgia factor would probably be lost on me that a real Quake II nut would get from it.

I honestly don't remember that much of Singularity, I haven't played it since it was recent, and I remember liking it... though, when you mention it, I also remember finding similarities between it and Timeshit. I certainly do remember liking Wolfenstein 2009 more.

I do think Raven's 2009 Wolfenstein is criminally fucking underrated and did a lot of what The New Order got heaps of praise for years later, but at the time noone cared.

Imo it's definitely not shit since it doesn't annoy the player unlike modern fps.

I do like Quake II and have in-general always liked Quake. So yeah.. that maybe a factor why I also like Quake 4. I don't however really see how q4 would supposedly resemble cod, atleast in it's gameplay? I very much hate cod and seeing how much I despise it, I doubt if q4 heavily resembled cod that I would actually be able to tolerate it either. Singularity heavily resembles cod in it's gameplay and design and this is also why I have such problem with it. I do plan to give Singularity a second chance though but according to people.. eventhough it runs on UE3, supposedly you can't edit the config files and instead have stuff like low fov etc. So singularity really ain't making it easy for me to tolerate the game.

I think it was mostly the scripted scenes with NPC's and the over-reliance on the machinegun. "Reminiscent of CoD" should be seen in relation to Doom 3, as that's what I'm directly comparing it to. Don't read too] much into that statement, but it was what I kept thinking when playing if shortly after Doom 3.

I didn't think it was any good. Not that it was terrible, but it was extremely underwhelming. I expected something on the level of Portal genius which was a mistake I guess seeing as it didn't get much press. It was just average. The time shifting capabilities, while really well done and interesting on their own, were simply not used to their fullest potential. Add to that the entire story being told through memory cutscenes in between levels....yeah, it's pretty mundane. And the story itself is your average everyday go back in time and take over the world drivel. The atmosphere sure felt like CoD. It did have regenerating health too, didn't it? I was so disappointed.

I remember finding an old TimeShift demo before it was redesigned and discovering that Jon St. John recorded one of the main voices. Some of the level areas were reworked and used in the full game I think as well. A couple spots looked familiar. It seemed like it was going to be a very different game, though. Something more like Unreal 2, which is even MORE mundane if you ask me. The end result was something more realistic and not so fantastical, which is why I think it feels more like CoD. It used to be quite vibrant and colourful and the end result is very brown/blue/drab gritty "realism".

The frozen rain drops when using freeze time was really cool, though. It's just too bad. It could have been something really special had the right person been behind it to realize its full potential. I don't even know what it would be I just feel it in my gut that with such a golden game mechanic it could have been so much more.

I played it a bit one time ago and did indeed think it was underrated. It wasn't amazing, but not as bad as people say it is. Too bad you can't find it on steam though... the same with Soldier of Fortune...
