Putting all of that behind us, I just got 7 this year after having Vista for an unhealthy six years. I absolutely love it, and I don't see a need to upgrade for a long time.

I'm still on my original Vista install from maybe 5-6 years ago. I like it. My big change today was going from 20 years of I.E. to Google Chrome about a hour ago. Whew. My only issue so far is these forums are my home page and when the browser fires up it takes me here. But if I hit the "home" button it takes me to Google search page.

Whew is right. Never been a fan of IE, haven't used it regularly for a very long time. Played with Firefox for years, but they've gone down the toilet in recent memory. So Google Chrome has been my main source of web browsing.

EDIT:

You can change that in Chrome's settings, as soon as you get to that page it will ask you what you want to open when the browser starts up. Yours is probably set to what tab you were on before the browser was exited.

I went to the settings page as soon as I ran Chrome for the first time. I copy/pasted this URL into the startup page. You mean that's not enough? I'll have to look into it. Why would there now be a difference between home page and startup page. That makes no sense.

Try this, paste the URL for your homepage into the setting under "show home button". That will set your homepage to your preference.

What worked was having to set the "New Tab Page" to the same URL as my "Startup page". Now the home button works as it should. Seems goofy but it worked.

Edit: It worked for the home button but when I opened a new tab I'm back at Google again. I'll figure it out. I just need to take the time and go through all there is to do. I'm sure I have to add a few extensions for stuff like pdf files and such like I did with I.E.

It turns out that Chrome has built in viewing support for pdf file but the interface sucks and I can't customize it. I'm going to see if regular Adobe Reader can be integrated like with I.E.

You know what they say. Ignorance is bliss. I tweaked settings and did a few registry tweaks and got Vista looking and working like I wanted. The only REAL issue I have with Vista is MS ( maybe in cahoots with Creative ) decided to remove the ability to record whatever is running through your sound card in an effort to curb pirating music from websites. Microphone and line in inputs recorded fine. 3rd party software is needed to fill the gap and they weren't perfect with their buffering and hiccups. Since I haven't been a cutting edge gamer for many years keeping up with the Jones's next door is not something I worry about. Besides, with my ancient hardware I doubt I will see the huge advantage to Win10 and possibly not even have drivers for it. I just don't feel like making the effort without guaranteed results.

I used to have a Vista comp for I think 3 years. I don't really think it was that bad. I just think it was Windows' first jump to its current interface, so it was the cool thing to hate. Then 7 came out and looked exactly the same, which alerted people that Microsoft isn't budging so then they decided to all like 7. To this day 7 is the cool thing to like. Just trends and buzzwords IMO.

I think Microsoft realized that the proper way to prevent another hate-fad like Vista is to come out with new operating systems more often, so that people have time to get used to newer stuff, rather then waiting 6 years like with Vista after XP and dropping it all on the consumers with one giant package. That's why I think 7, 8, and 10 were given quicker development cycles.

Windows 10 and its ability to collect personal data are just the latest complaining fad IMO.
