Was that ever in the HRP? If not, I'm leaning against adding it.

No, i think it wasn't.

If you check out chicken's post (round about here) he had a 'label contest' of sorts and you might find a few labels in there. He also had some meshes of different milk containers that you could probably use to get normal maps and so forth.

I've done a few labels for you "link". Nothing really fancy, but it might help break it up a bit.

I got quite a lot of stuff lying around, some parts are already finished.
But all in all i bit off more than i could chew on this one.

Glad to see you're taking care of it, Spiker! :(

I'll prepare some stuff and post it one by one.

@Tea Monster: What is needed for the normals, only the Blender-files? Or textures as well? (Haven't dealt with this subject at all yet)

In this case textures are not needed for normals but you may post everything you have if you think it's usable. I already used TM labels for bigger milk containers but it's still too little :(

This could be useful later on but you really should post models otherwise some stuff may not make much use for me and I will have to do without this. Unless someone wanted just to produce a flat image in Photoshop but then the image and a normal map would not be that good.

Edit: Here we go.

Edit edit: Just for the fun of it, some renders of what's in the archive.

just a quick one, what is the current muzzle-flash for the shotgun in hrp?

I had been using this from a dukeplus mod I grabbed, just for the muzzleflashes, a while ago.
Then recently I used Lightsource's rpg flash to make this shotgun flash.

Anyway, I only ask because Lightsource has raised the bar for graphics and as such the old shotgun flash looks out of place a bit now that we have his more classic shaped chaingun and pistol flashes.

obviously if there already is a better one, then the following request is moot but;

@lightsource
don't suppose you fancy making us a more faithful version of the shotgun muzzle flash?
I'm sure we'd all be eternaly gratefull, I know I would :(
...its basicly more-or-less just a red version of the first chaingun flash right?
btw I thought the first set of cg flashes you did were perfect before the demand for more alpha was laid down, the new one seems to look less orange and more yellow now but the others were 100% faithfull yet such high quality, I never saw a problem there at all. oh well, we can just use the older ones if we prefer, eh!
thanks in advance

Latchford

Chicken, the blend files are what is needed. If you just apply a sub-surf mod to them you should get a nice smooth surface for baking.

This thing? Weird, I really thought it was in the HRP at some point. Maybe Parkar still has it somewhere.

Yeah this one looks so awesome it'd be a crying shame for it not to be in the pack.

@Spiker I for one actually liked the look of your previous screenshot of the display of milk cartons.... just from an aesthetics point of view though rather than how close they are to the actual thing. I personally wouldn't have minded if it went in as is and I saw it on my screen though.

It's been in the HRP as long as the SVN has existed. highres/sprites/decals/0546_n.png

This texture is done and it will be included (But it's not in the episode so I don't plan to improve it any furhter. It can be useful for custom maps). However this one is a different texture. The current composition looks like this (render straight from Blender without fancy polymer effects) so it's the last chance to comment on this before I will proceed to the next stage.

It's really cool to see that the stuff i or rather we made has finally been used. Makes me feel less like a sucker :(

One thing that i would like to see improved though is the lack of depth. In the original texture you can see that there are several rows of boxes/bottles behind the first one.
If you add that then you're my hero.

The fake perspective doesn't work if the texture gets tiled, which it does. Shouldn't the alignment of the rack be vertical only to account for that? The multiple depths of the parallax map should then account for the horizontal perspective.

Picture

I liked that previous texture but this is even better in the realism department and all those fake milk products are funny too. The pink one could use some extra shading though in my opinion.... although that may be taken care of by the normal\spec map I guess but yeah.... could use a little more of a cardboard type texturing to it. I really like those milk bottles but the handles\hole for the handles could be bigger.... imagine a person trying to grip them. The hole is too small and the handles aren't thick enough.

Also I guess it's OK for the several rows to be there if you are just going to do it as a flat texture... however I think especially if you put a normal\offest mapping it wont work so well as you can't do that much depth with it.... even just one row of bottles can be problematic as you can't do them totally 3 dimensional and more like a relief. Although that still would work better than trying to do a normal map for more than one row of milk cartons\jugs. So far all indications to me seem like you can't do displacement\offset mapping with that much detail\depth and have it look good at the same time.

If you can pull it off though more power to you.

Really? It never looked that good for me... and I've been keeping up with the SVN for quite some time.

I'm using the PHRP from my SVN and I've never noticed any kind of depth or special lighting behaviour on the crack. It looks exactly how it did in HRP v4.

good work spiker, but I believe that the "blue pleasure" and "whipped cream" looks too flat compared to the other ("cherno milk" is fantastic, and the other bottles are very good). a little more detail would be perfect, in my opinion.

also, I'm not convinced by the black border on "soya" label.

Even nowadays not every product has a fancy label. But I'm willing to replace these if you provide a decent subsitute, otherwise you will have to live with it. The choice is yours. If you really care then you will cook something up :( (Everyone is still welcome to submit his labels btw, I really can't waste my motivation on something trivial like this or I will give it up as chicken did and pick up something else), Yes some bottles are very detailed. In fact they are too detailed because most of it won't be visible anyway. I think that's the main reason why chicken gave it up. He put too much effort to make things "too perfect" while in this case it doesn't really pay off. You can adjust it even for a month to make it flawless but it's impossible to keep your motivation so high for so long working only on one texture, especially when the hard part (broken version) is still ahead. Besides noone is going to contemplate this texture for longer than 3 sec in game and usually it will be viewed at a certain distance. The goal is to make thing believable.

But can this account for something which isn't visible? Becasue then only a small portion of the bottles behing will "stick out". Anyway tell me if this is what you meant.

It would be better if the objects were slight misaligned, since it is quite unrealistic in frontal view

I finally was able to upload my databases to my site.

Here are the extracted frames of all of the ANM cinematics in Duke Nukem 3D.

Speak for yourself... I plan on standing there 1-3 feet away in-game and contemplate in depth the pros and cons of choices of each milk brand and which one I would like to take to the check out stand. :( Just kidding
