"But the news is saying they aren't shut down."
They are??? This is news to me. I thought the Shacknews article had "shut down" in its headline?
The only source that says gone bust is the BBC, and how the hell do they know? They are just making an assumption without much evidence. The shacknews page says shut down, and I believe this was a choice thing. We will have to hear from 3dr if they release the whole story (Damn they develop a game in silence and then die in silence)

it shows something.
they have bene working for 12 or so years on this game an take2 rejected to help them so they was like fuck you an closed down.
it comes accross as a very powerfull an intimidating thing.
im guessing that might be it i dunno.

So, as a Duke fan, I experienced the broad range of emotions like (most) everyone else. I thought it was a joke -- then an unveiling/marketing ploy -- then a mistake/unsubstantiated rumor -- and, finally, the truth. After finally accepting it, like most Duke fans, I got pretty upset. Upset that we'd waited so long for such a ridiculous dead end to show up at what feels like the last hour. Upset at proposed mis-management. Upset at George B., and pretty much the 3DR name, thinking: Jesus, shouldn't I have known?
But oh well. In the end, I'm bewildered, annoyed, and more upset with myself than anyone else for keeping the flame "going", so-to-speak. At the end of the day, I hope it works out. I hope DNF somehow gets finished, published, and DNF becomes an incredible success story of overcoming enormous odds as opposed to a cautionary tale of game development hell.
Most of all, I hope to learn more about this. The 'why'. I don't really want this to get swept under the rug and have to wonder who fucked up, when, where and how -- if anyone (though, it's most assuredly someone's fault -- perhaps 'many' someones). I don't really want to go around assuming I know what happened here when all I can really do is make guesses (educated though they may be).

George packs up the game and goes to show Take2 the game. Speculation is that he asked them for $5 million to finish the game
and they basically said "You need to STFU". George came home knowing this would kill the game/company but continued to twitter as
if everything was alright.
3drealms has apparently *never* taken a loan. Why all of a sudden the need to ask for this kind of money and right at the end?
If this is indeed how it happened and George knew all along this would happen but still continued to put positive spin on the game....then
I am speechless, stunned and let down.
I thought something didn't seem right when he came home from Take2 and basically never addressed how "the showing" went with Take2.
I now believe it was because he was shot down and they wanted to wash their hands of the game.

Here's an interesting question. Which Duke3D song suits the fate of DNF/3DR best for you? For me it would be either Gotham, Whomp, or possibly XPlasma. They seem sad/somber/solemn enough. Or if you're angry or happy about it maybe something more along the lines of DethToll, Snake, or Depart is what you're feeling.

You know this is wierd. First they have a barbeque to celebrate something but then they decide to shut down 3DR because they have no money. I think it's Scott's Idea to shut down the 3DR branch because it's not worth the investment and I think they'll go the indie publisher route with Radar Group.

I can not imagine that DNF was SO bad that they just quit and wanted to do something else.
And was Duke bad at math? How can you run out of money unnoticed, else then thinking you might get more from you publisher (but didnt).
DNF would surely bring up more then 5 million, even during the finacial crisis.
And whats up with the Radar Group?
All these questions... Why haven't we seen the official 3DRealms response to this...
probably when they are done

#380 Posted 07 May 2009 - 01:31 PM
Lol yeah. Response? WiD!

Optimism doesn't begin to describe it.
What we can hope for is basically the same kind of thing that happens with companies like Free Radical -- people get bought up. If it happens, you'll have DNF (if they choose to keep it?) being developed under slightly new management (probably for the best). Of course I don't know where the DN IP is at this point, so there may be trouble with continuing DNF development elsewhere?

Or some ex-3DR guys could start a new studio and complete it.
Or we may never see it.

Oh no doubt. I can 99.9998 percent say that Duke Nukem will continue. The IP is extremely popular and is an almost household name among gamers. The only thing is, I don't know how Duke Nukem would be without 3DR. The only developer I could think of (except for Radar and Apogee) that MIGHT be able to carry on the Duke legacy faithfully would be id. MAYBE Epic.
And we aren't saying Apogee is going to publish it ashley. We're saying Apogee may finish developing it. Take-Two would still be the publisher unless the contract is renegotiated.

Does anyone here have contact through facbook, Linkedin, etc. with anyone that works there? If they are out of business they can talk now. Everything hinges on how far the game was done. Everything. Are there ANY playable levels?
I won?t stop believing for a few more days, but tonight I will drink, very heavily.
Good luck to all of us.

They tend to finish what 3DR starts.
