3D Realms Shutting Down

#241

Seriously, why did they lock the DNF Forums and why are they keeping the others opened???

I don't understand.

Most likely because shutting down the DNF forums prevents the VAST majority of troll posts or question posts that would typically be coming in, thus reducing the workload for the moderators and Joe when it comes time to wrap it up. But keeping the forums up in general as a good gesture towards the community that is there... or perhaps they just went home to drink and go to sleep until tomorrow.

From what I understand Friday is the official last day, so there is still time to take care of things and wrap it up.

The forums at 3DR are back up.

I've had them up here for quite a while...

Also, you can't take the BBC as fact, they just heard it from everyone else.

Hello all

I've been a silent unregistered lurker for a very long time, since the first "enhancing duke's spritely appearance" thread was created on the duke nukem board. I've also closely followed the DNF board and every tiny update. I was planning on registering on the official 3DR forums, but now it seems to be too late  . So i've registered here.

This surely is a dark day. My condolances towards all Dukers and the staff of 3drealms. Seems strangely sudden though, considering the twitters from a few weeks back...

But not all is grim. There are a few bright spots on the horizon, such as the new polymer renderer... gives us at least something to look out for.

Hi Skull!

Charlie, if this is final on Friday, are you still bound by NDA or can you finally let us know what the hell was going on there?

Because then there would be a flood of threads. Joe locked it after two new threads.

So, we'll probably get an official statement on Friday, then?

My guess. They are still bound by the NDA which (like everything else) is now held by the bank. A bank will be less likely and less able to shut people up. People will slowly start to feal more like talking. Things are already starting to drip out and that will pick up until we have enough to piece together what was happening. It will take a few months though. I'm not sure where I read it. Maybe on these forums? A previous employee saying things went down hill since the 2001 trailer.

We will here more that's for sure.

My suggestion to 3DR:
Sell some IPs like Shadow Warrior (we all know they aren't going to be making another) or any of the classic titles they won't be touching ever again. I am sure there is someone out there who would love to own the Shadow Warrior IP or something like that. Even if the last release was over a decade ago.

I dunno what the real status of all those things are but it's very unlikely.

Edit: Reason being those agreements weren't what really kept me from elaborating further anyways... so them being valid or not doesn't really change anything for me.

I was in Garland last fall on business and Joe invited me to tour 3DR and take me out to lunch. At the last minute my schedule got changed and I didn't have the time, so I had to cancel. Bad as it was to have to turn him down, I'm all the sadder now for never having met those guys.

Why is it taking so long to get a official statement, it's strange that officially Joe is the only one who responded to this.

Do you have spoken with someone from 3Drealms Charlie, or is it just rumors you hear ?

I keep hearing that the IP will be owned by the bank or their creditors but this may not be the case. 3DR probably doesn't have huge outstanding loans and they are not a public company, they may not owe anybody.

Yes, quite a few and they all are saying the same thing... that they were told yesterday that they were being let go and Friday was the last day.

3d realms are private owned. the rights may go to apogee or take2 might just take them. i bank i highly doubt will when they are private owned. never had a loan.

they should have stopped playing WOW you know those monthly fees add up between workers

If they didn't owe anybody then they wouldn't now be bust. At least that's how I understand it.

It's weird that George suggested in his Twitter updates that the game was close to be finished, to pull the plug on this game almost complete is just stupid.

they ran out of money. you forgetting they had to give some money to scott an that to form apogee. i mean someone had to fun the start of apogee an the starting development of the duke trilogy.

they didnt make much money from prey. an you know after so many years you will run out. an im guessing they funding for apogee was quite a bit then you have to pay for your workers you know i can see it easily happening an then you have the funding for the payment of the website an the duke nukem forever. they havent done much to get money so i can see how this happend

if free radical can go under then so could 3d realms just as easy an i said that when free radical went under

I dreamt that DNF was cancelled and Duke Nukem *blank* was announced. The title's missing word began with 'I' and had about 6 or 7 letters. It was a word that meant hot. I can't remember what is was but it sounded cool .

DNF has been "almost finished" since 1998. What makes you think this time would've been for real?

“We’re confident that DNF will be one of the greatest, if not the greatest, game of 1998. And this confidence is not misplaced.” - Scott Miller, 1997

“Duke Nukem Forever is a 1999 game and we think that timeframe matches very well with what we have planned for the game.” - George Broussard, 1998

“Trust us, Duke Nukem Forever will rock when it comes out next year.” - Joe Siegler, 1999

“When it’s done in 2001.” - 2000 Christmas card

“DNF will come out before Unreal 2.” - George Broussard, 2001

“If DNF is not out in 2001, something’s very wrong.” - George Broussard, 2001

“DNF will come out before Doom 3.” - George Broussard, 2002

It's about 10 o'clock in the morning in Garland,Texas. I hope we have some (good i hope) news soon.

Did they let ALL the staff go, or the majority of the employees?
