Thing is that I WANT to believe that it is a joke but logic tells me it's all true.

fuck this shit  Of all the games over the years I just really wanted to play one. Just one. DNF. Other games have been cool over the years but DNF has always sat in my mind. ;)

You make an excellent point, if this is a work then its got to be the best publicity stunt in the history of gaming. I mean they have gone all out, taken the site offline - Joe says its real, employees facebook status's, Linkd In profile changes etc. I could see George and Scott having a big meeting with the team and laying this whole thing out.

Oh well, time will tell.

and yeah, no statement from GB or SM so far is really freakin weird.

Just mere days ago George was casually playing poker with friends.

Well there it is. He got drunk & bet the company on a busted flush.

Scott Miller was working full-time in Radar for the last half a year at least. And he was, I think, the one who was more in charge of financial part of 3dr, no?

I am afraid you guys are setting yourselfs up to be even more dissapointed with these theories.

Sorry for the irrelevant post, but Yatta i have to say it.

You look very awesome in that youtube video!!!!

Anyway on topic, i think it is still very early in the morning for Garland,Texas. They must be sleeping now (those who can actually  ). Hopefully in a couple of hours we will have more news....

But i was thinking, if 3d realms falls apart, won't there be easily more leaks of the game? Some employees may not have any motivation for keeping the confidentiallity agreement with DNF anymore. I am not saying this is a good thing, just making a speculation...

It's fairly obvious that 3D Realms is actually shutting down. It makes no sense to joke about it. It does make sense that in this economic climate that they would be out of money.

So why put false hope into your fans moreso than what to the extreme amounts that you had done in the past 12 years?

Public relations, that's why. If 2K had decided to fund 3DRealms for another phase of DNF development, there would have been no reason at all to let people know 3DRealms had any problem. But of course they didn't, so the lie was forced to become evident.

I'm actually hoping this.

If it is a hoax/prank like these theories, here's mine
the game started development 3 years ago.
before then was planning the release and the insane hoax they will have to pull, making sure it is perfect.

That was about as likely as they are going to get, which isn't very likely at all.
I think we'll all have to accept the loss of 3DRealms and hope for the best...

edit: a leak would be awesome, anything AT ALL playable...

I came across this Shacknews post by Scott Alden; it's from the perspective of an ex-3DR employee, but it exactly mirrors my feelings on DNF over the years:

Quote

It was the stuff that I saw in 2000 that got me excited to join 3DR.

The demo in 2001 was the pinnacle of fun development... I guess about 6-8 months after that demo it was decided to switch rendering technologies (real time lighting and camera in the head),

That's when it all started to go downhill.

Stop bringing up this stupid crisis. The management sucked ass. Now is the logical payback.

Of course he is.

Also, I think Yatta made a great choice by posting a video.

No leak. If there's any hope and this is in fact true(I won't believe it until George and or Scott officially comment) I'd like to think
George will sell the Duke IP or move it to Radar Group to get the game finished.

The game deserves to get finished and released.

I'm pretty sure it will be released somehow. It wouldn't be the first time a game is released in an incomplete state.

Scott Maclean also updated his site to say this: "For any prospective employers checking out the site, welcome. I hope you enjoy what you see. Feel free to email me with any questions."

I can't believe the money just dried up "like that".

So not only can George not get a game done, he can't balance his check book?

This sounds like they may have been getting some type of funding and that went out the window. This is just....amazing.

I keep saying this. I may be wrong but this is certainly the case in the UK. If the company has gone bust THE IP DOES NOT BELONG TO THEM. It will belong to the receivers as appointed by the bank along with all the other company assets including source code, servers, furniture, debts, the lot!

As 3DR have stated they didn't have a loan it's hard to see how they could have gone bust. Maybe they haven't and just closed the doors instead. Unless anyone knows better time will tell I guess.

Maybe when Scott left to do the Radar thing he took the money with him?

What makes you think anyone would want to touch it even with a ten foot pole?
If this post at QtT has any truth to it, it sure as hell ain't Take2.

We're talking about a franchise that had one sucessful iteration 13 years ago and has since been tainted by the DNF debacle, I can't see the big name publishers crawling over each other to be the first to sink their millions into it, especially not at this financially precarious point in time.
Stick with what works would be the frame of mind I'd think - DNF definitely didn't.

however unlikely it is, I'm wondering what the 2 unannounced projects are on radar group's site are...

I'm gonna say bullshit to that.

If anything(again if this is indeed true) it was simply mismanaged. George bit off more than he could chew and everyone is paying for it now.

The Duke IP is a strong one. If DNF or the Duke IP is put up for sale, I think it will be grabbed quickly.

This quote made me laugh on the 3DR board just now by German Duke Fan:

and i have bet 5 cheeseburgers on the release of DNF in this year!

I'm pretty sure it has quite a bit to do with the economical crisis. Don't you lose a couple of banks every week? I wouldn't want to be a game developer without a new game since 1997 today...
