3D Realms Shutting Down

I have a nagging sensation at the back of my head that George took a look at the bank account and thought fuck it took all the money he had left and closed down shop.

That can not be true! I just woke up,go to my computer and want to check the 3dr Forums like every morning.

The server is to busy at the moment

I thought okay there must be big news on DNF,maybe a trailer?
Then i checked Duke4.net ;)
I can't belive this!!! WTF!!!
If 3dr can not finish this game Duke is dead. A duke game developed from a other company than 3dr isn't Duke!! Sorry!!!
I'm shocked and want start to cry!!

This is so lame, I just sent an email to my friend who was bagging this game (EVERYTHING about it) defending the game, how awesome this will be, and then this...

Didn't George copy the game to HIS laptop, so wouldn't he still have it or something, to pass on or keep..
If another company DID pick it up, I think iD would be pretty cool, if anyone...

This is just so lame, but don't lose hope, it does not mean the confirmed death of duke. We still have the trilogy and the possibility of another company.

*Sits in a corner nodding my head up and down repeating the words "DNF is coming! DNF is coming!"*

Yeah denial has well and truly kicked in.

Although it does seem fishy that all this has occurred from with what seems like a blink of an eye. Something good from all the negative has to come out of all this for the employees and the fans.

sorry to say it, but that really sucks. I hope 3DR is able to reorganize somehow, if not no doubt someone will pick it up and release it. Just sucks that it would not be 3DR.

You know, over the past years I've crossed over to the naysayer camp, but even I didn't see this coming.
Closure of the DNF project perhaps, but the whole company?
This bums me out more than I would have expected and there's this uncomfortable feeling that mourning for the DNF I was once so excited about is kinda selfish because of the job loss involved.

Guess Charlie and most of the other oldtimers got out in time, though.

It's a damn shame, i'm still watching 3D realms forums at the moment, but i've come over to Duke4.net incase they are to close those forums.

Hail to the king of developers, 3D Realms.

Scott and George must know this for a long time, Radar Group was a first sign

Been following this game since 1998, sad day today.

Can you talk about it Wieder, what do you think about it ?

Huge shame. For me 3drealms.com has stopped returning a page as of about an hour ago. I'm not sure if they're just over-loaded or if they have switched it off. I think I remember Joe saying at one stage that the server was physically hosted at the 3drealms offices so I guess they might just have powered down and gone home. Sad, sad, sad.

I honestly didn't think DNF would ever see the light of day in anything like the form that we hoped for but I didn't see 3DR going under. Really sorry guys and thanks for the excellent forums etc.

I dunno honestly. I can completely understand running out of money, I imagine most people are surprised it wouldn't have happened sooner.

There is a tiny part of me that still feels like this might be the greatest troll in video game history... but that would have to require fabrication on a magnitude that is implausible. I'm seeing the exact things you would expect to see when a company lets everyone go on facebook/linkedin... and the private messages I've gotten would have to be extremely clever if they were fake. Good friends asking for referrals for job openings, phone numbers, etc.

Don't take my tiny bit of doubt as hope of course, there is nothing that indicates it's not pretty much as the story out there says, but just the surreal nature of the project history makes it hard to accept this happening. It's kinda like in a movie where all the main characters are battling these horrible horrible things and then you get to the end of the movie and it was all a dream. You kinda just wander around in a fog wondering what it'll be like to NOT have that thing around.

I actually imagine it's not unlike a the way people feel when they have a death of a pet. I know part of me feels that sort of weird loss.

Looks like 3DR website is completely gone, it stopped whilst it was downloading things from it (I was grabbing some stuff, like manuals and some of the news archives - i have hard drives full of stuff like that)

And now nothing happens at all, forums are getting slower too.

Not just me then. Guess it was to be expected - especially as they were having problems with traffic. Looking at it from whoever supports these things perspective (presumable Joe) Why stress to fix a problem like high traffic demands when it's all over anyway?

which begs the question... why not close the forums at the same time? Buddha, I don't know what to think.

I guess the forums are hosted on a different server outside the 3DR building (I seem to remember the main web server is physically located in the 3DR building). I would guess the forums will stop working very soon. Edit: The forums no longer work for me.

I hope we can see an in depth analysis about what has been happening along the lines of This about Diakatana sometime soon. I guess a lot of people will feal they can't talk about it yet, but as time goes on...

What buggers me above all, is that only Duke Nukem Forever forum has been locked. The others are still online and accessible at all. They could have blocked the entire forums, if they wanted.

Crap, this sucks major time. Why did they had to come to this?

WestSeven, you are right, the forums are elsewhere (the server is anyway)
So 3D Realms would have to tell them to shut it down i guess, that will be why they are still up.

I'm gonna check some laws out, i might be able to do a partial mirror of the 3D Realms site in it's final state - as a monument to 3D Realms... but it depends on the legality of it. The forums i can't do though.
