Haven't seen that mentioned anywhere else.

I feel like making a 'nail in the coffin' comment here, but I think we're past the 'nailing' part and into the 'filling in the hole' part now (if you'll excuse the two wholly unintentional innuendos there). On the more positive side, I wouldn't worry too much about the future of DNF itself - assuming that George B wasn't flat-out lying about how far along the game was I think there's a pretty reasonable chance of 3DR selling DNF in it's current state to be finished by someone else. Imagine it: A company hands you an extremely well-known, almost-finished game with an established fanbase and a highly marketable lead character, giving you the opportunity to finish it (probably in a matter of months) and thus allowing you to swoop in as the handsome new developer who succeeded where the villainous old regime failed - what company would turn down a chance like that?

As for which company would get it, A] I don't think 3DR would sell their baby to just anyone, and B] It'd take quite a talent to stuff up a game when you've got several years of existing material to model your work off.

Funny though, even though this is not what I expected I'm not surprised.

Sad thing is a while ago I was looking for Manhattan project, and couldn't find that either.

What does everyone think will happen to DNF? Will it get picked up by someone else (like Radar Group for instance) get finished and released, or will it languish on some HDD never to see the light of day?

if it gets picked up by radar group it will still never come out. Scott Miller was an enabler of GB. He is no better than GB.

Malgon, I seriously think the former of the two possibilities will occur. Look at this as a "short-term delay."

ASSUMING DNF is something like 75% done (or more) then I think it'll almost certainly get finished somehow. Remember, this is an extremely well-known game featuring one of the most recognizable video game characters of all time - there's gotta be a truckload of devs who'd cut off their wedding tackle to get their hands on something like that, and 3DR would be insane to not sell if they didn't plan to work on it themselves (and soon, considering the rate at which the game will become outdated visually).

Sad thing is that George probably doesn't want anyone but his company to work on DNF, hence why it hasn't been sold off. Honestly.. I'm just too damn depressed to care now about the game. 12 years George... I didn't have a damn day without thinking about DNF. Thanks a lot for nothing.

Night all.

I'm shocked. I'd been waiting for this game for about 6 years. I love when games have potencial, and that's what DNF showed me the first time I watched the 2001 trailer, back in 2003. Three years later I joined the 3DR Forums, having faith that the day DNF was gonna be released was near. But now... damn!

I'm sorry for all the people at 3DR who gave their best for the making of DNF. I truly am. So much work and potential wasted.

I guess I can finish my Duke 3D levels for Left 4 Dead now without waiting for George's permission.

This is really a huge surprise. I am truly amazed that this came about so abruptly. Hopefully something gets worked out, especially where the Duke IP is concerned. It is amazing to me that we are about to lose IMHO the greatest gaming developer ever. They have definitely been involved in some of my favorite games of all time.

I've wasted my life.

Thanks for nothing George, your ignorance and incompetence might of delayed the game for 12 years but only now it has cost you and sealed the fate of your company. I guess you were lucky for a while. Funny how things eventually catch up to you huh?

I really thought it was the year. The signs were there. Let's just hope the game actually was close to completion and that it will hopefully be picked up by another developer who will actually finish the fucking thing.

I still find it amazing that we are still left in the dark even for a massive (FUCKING MASSIVE) event like this. 3D Realms still haven't made an official announcement or even a bloody news post on the front page about this. They just wouldn't ever learn.

RIP Duke.

While I'm just as pissed and upset as you are Sharpie, I think it is highly disrespectful to call George incompetent, and ignorant without having any facts on the situation. Although I'm just as confused to how the situation came about as anyone else, I'm sure George is just as upset as any of us if not more so. Wait for the facts until we condemn anyone.

How about you chill a little lad. At the end of this we're only missing a game, but they're missing their jobs. They've got families and new borns and now much deal with a job search in an already saturated market place. I imagine the last few months for them would have been insanely tough. They were probably giving it all and not getting paid the same, so a cancelled game is probably the smallest of their problems. Running your mouth off does not do a person justice.

I obviously exaggerated on the "wasted my life" comment if anyone couldn't tell. ;) (I am only 17 years old)

My thoughts are definitely with the ex-employees at 3D Realms as I know this is a very difficult time for them and there is alot of uncertainty with their future. No-one deserves to go through something like this and it truly is devastating. I understand that the game is the least of their worries.

My remarks about George certainly were a little harsh but I don't think anyone could deny that his handling of the development of Duke Nukem Forever was incompetent at times. Things could have worked out much better. I retract my personal attack as I know he will be hit hard by this event and he will be as saddened like the rest of us.

I am still rather pissed off about this whole debacle though. Duke Nukem Forever had been an industry joke for over a decade and just when I thought things were turning around and the light at the end of the tunnel was near we get this. I am deeply saddened. I know it is just a game but for many of us it is much more than that.

I wish EVERYONE at 3DR the best in the future (including George). It was my favourite gaming company through the better and worse and I sincerely hope everything turns out ok.

Yeah I think my first response was influenced by pure shock. I wonder what will happen to DNF?

Are you fucking kidding me? HE WAS THE PROJECT LEAD OF DNF. THE PROJECT THAT WAS IN DEVELOPMENT FOR 12 YEARS. It's not just "3dRealms is closing" thing. Lack of good project lead was the main reason for all the DNF delays. George was incompetent in 2001. And, apparently, he still is. I don't care what knowledge does he have in the industry. His handling of the project proves what he is worth.
