Best video capture/recording software for EDuke32?  "to show off nice stuff ;)"

Hey guys, I wanted to record some gameplay for a later Youtube upload.
So I've tested some programs and came to this list.
Tested with Windows7 64bit, Geforce GTX 560, Core i7 3770, 8GB RAM and latest EDuke32 in OpenGL mode.

  • Open Broadcaster
    positive:
    • free software and opensource
    • audio and video recording with good quality
    • doesn't decrease fps ingame noticeable
    • you can also use it for livestreams

    negative:
    • works only with Eduke32 in windowed mode, fullscreen will result in a gray videofootage

To capture your video to disc, you have to set the broadcast modus to output in a file.
For a good quality I also set CBR off and 9000 kbits/s, quality to 10 and the renderer profile to ultra fast (for lowest impact on fps).

  • MSI-Afterburner
    positive:
    • free software (and also works with other cards then MSI)
    • audio and video recording with good quality
    • doesn't decrease fps ingame noticeable

    negative:
    • works only with Eduke32 in windowed mode, fullscreen will result in a gray videofootage
    • records the mouse cursor and you can't deactivate it
    • you have to start recording before you start the game, because EDuke will block the hotkey for recording
    • records the whole screen and not only the game window

This tool is thought for overclocking your GPU, but it also has a nice video capture function, which works quite nice with most games.
Sadly, it doesn't work with Eduke this nice...

  • FRAPS
    positive:
    • very good audio and video quality
    • supports fullscreen capture

    negative:
    • decreases fps count ingame drasticly
    • commercial - you have to buy it
    • on my PC, it records only the music from EDuke, not the sound effects

These are just my test results and for me Open Broadcaster is the best solution.

So, what are your recommendations for recording EDuke32?

I feel like EDuke32 should have some sort of internal video output method, though only as some sort of raw TGA output. (I think the team can agree that a video encoder has no place within EDuke32.) Perhaps I should investigate to see if a TGA frameset format using deltas and RLE exists, and if not, write one, and write a tool to export it. Or something.

Not sure about audio output. libFLAC has all the encoding functions in the libFLAC.a that we already link with. It shouldn't be too hard to output to a FLAC stream. Once the multiple-audio-buffer fix for reverb-ing music is added, there could be separate files for music and sounds too.

Hey!
An ingame recording feature would be awesome!
But... I think this is something to come over when other things like polymer and the netcode works quite satisfying. :P
Also I think dumping video in raw TGA would cost a lot of memory on harddrive and therefore will result in low fps due the writing process.
But that's just a suggestion.

Anyways... with Open Broadcaster im quite happy, works real good with some tweeks in the settings...

So, I'm looking forward to present you a real good trailer on Youtube, once my map is done. :P

Have you tried Bandicam? I find it much better than Fraps, it's commical though so either try a demo or ARRRRRR...

ARRRRRRR!
Thanks for the hint man!
But I prefer the opensource and free solution. :P

But hey, hardware x264 encoding sounds good man.... sounds real good.
Maybe ill give it a try if I'm not satisfied with Open Broadcast anymore. :P

Btw, can you capture EDuke in fullscreen with that?

I believe that you can, at least it worked last time I tried it.
