Most people don't seem to realize the censorship present in Duke 64 is actually done with a tongue-in-cheek tone.

"Gun Crazy" - replacing porn and strippers with guns and fast food. EXCESSIVELY so.

I will guess it's Nintendo fault with their absurd standards, and the developers just pushed it to the limit.

Nintendo of America’s priority is to deliver high quality video game entertainment for our customers. When those customers are children, parental involvement in their game playing is recommended. Nintendo is concerned that our products do not contain material that society as a whole deems unacceptable.

Consequently, since 1988 we have consistently tested the content of all games developed for Nintendo systems against our evolving game standards. As our business has matured, we have adapted our guidelines to meet the concerns of the members of our target age group and their parents. Although we realize that definitions of social, cultural and political views are highly subjective, we will continue to provide consumers with entertainment that reflects the acceptable norms of society.

The following Game Content Guidelines are presented for assistance in the development of authorized game paks (i.e., both Nintendo and licensee game paks) by defining the type of content and themes inconsistent with Nintendo’s corporate and marketing philosophy. Although exceptions may be made to preserve the content of a game, Nintendo will not approve games for the NES, Game Boy or Super NES systems (i.e., audio-visual work, packaging, and instruction manuals) which:

• include sexually suggestive or explicit content including rape and/or nudity; (1)

• contain language or depiction which specifically denigrates members of either sex; (2)

• depict random, gratuitous, and/or excessive violence; (3)

• depict graphic illustration of death; (4)

• depict domestic violence and/or abuse; (5)

• depict excessive force in a sports game beyond what is inherent in actual contact sports; (6)

• reflect ethnic, religious, nationalistic, or sexual stereotypes of language; this includes symbols that are related to any type of racial, religious, nationalistic, or ethnic group, such as crosses, pentagrams, God, Gods (Roman mythological gods are acceptable), Satan, hell, Buddha; (7)

• use profanity or obscenity in any form or incorporate language or gestures that could be offensive by prevailing public standards and tastes; (8)

• incorporate or encourage the use of illegal drugs, smoking materials, and/or alcohol (Nintendo does not allow a beer or cigarette ad to be placed on an arena, stadium or playing field wall, or fence in a sports game); (9)

• include subliminal political messages or overt political statements (10)

ZH was released during that last ditch effort of the N64's life cycle to introduce more adult and edgy games to spruce up interest, this culminated in Conker's Bad Fur Day.

I tried to play this (awesome) mod on the latest release of eDuke32 and I couldn't finish the first level (Duke wouldn't press the end-level nuke button). Is there a fix for this bug? Should I stick with the default exe that comes with the mod? (I like the new eduke menu that "slides" :) )

Links on the first page are down but you can get this mod at - ModDB Duke 64 mod download

This is really worth trying and I always considered Duke 64 to be an upgrade compared to the PSX version (except it's lack of music and levels)

It clearly was the best port out there imo, except the lack of music, and the censor, it was pure gold. Co-op, exclusive multiplayers levels, new sprites, re-recorded one-liners, 3D elements (explosions and Cycloid Emperor), new badass weapons (and they corrected that lack of Submachine guns found on the original boxart, but not in the original game :) ), rocking main theme and updated maps from the original game, they really did a good job, they didn't go for cash grabbing and tried to do something that even original PC players would find interesting. Only thing that sucked was the gameplay, it used the "Turok-Style" with no stick freelook, making it quite hard in some places...

It really was a good job overall.

It's been a while since i really played it, but i'm 95% sure you can save anywhere using the controller pack in the middle of an Episode, but not a level, the save screen was available during the end-level statistics, but not anywhere else.

Not any N64 port of PC game was able to do that, at least with the FPS, Quake, Quake II, Turok(s), Doom, all the same.

Well I decided to write a review for DN64 mod here it's a review kind of going over the game and the mod so pretty much could be used as both. Anyway many thanks. Maybe when and if eduke32 gets multiplayer people could play this mod through it :lol: I know I would anyway check it out if you want ;)

There was some problems with the old code, so I was forced to use a parallax sky. However due to the problems when looking up or down, I choose to use an skybox.

The big problem with N64 shooters was that the controller had three grips and since humans only have two hands you can only grab two of them, in 90% of cases the middle and right one. So the left grip with the d-pad was unused. If the d-pad was usable it could be used for things like inventory and weapon selection like it is in modern shooters with controller support. Also, the N64 didn't have two shoulder buttons like the PSX, but a back trigger instead. Perfect Dark partially solved the problem by having a quick on screen menu in which you could select every item on the fly.

I remember playing Duke64 back in the day and the controls were terrible. Modern controllers are much better than the N64 controller in this regard and their biggest disadvantage to PC controls is mostly the aiming since the precision of the mouse is impossible to replicate with a stick.

I still love the N64 controller and Duke64's controls. You can stretch your left thumb up to the D-pad for items without much difficulty. At least I can. I don't use them much anyway.

64 controller was hard to get down but once you got it there was no turning back. There is none other like that thing it just took some adjusting which actually added to the fun for some :lol:

Update your EDuke32, and make sure you have a legally acquired copy of duke3d.grp in your EDuke32 folder.
