It uses smpeg. Other than the smpeg library itself, this is the mpeg-related code in Megaton, and just about all you would need to add the format:

Spoiler

In theory it could be implemented using the same definitions functionality as VP8 but there are two issues:
  • It uses SDL, and EDuke32 does not use SDL on Windows. (Though it can if you build it that way, but there are no plans to remove "winlayer". [read: it's been thought about but we're not planning on pulling the trigger, indefinitely])
  • Does MPEG 1 offer any advantages over VP8 in 2013?

So back to the technical stuff. I know megaton's method is probably not the way to go, but IIRC our VB8 implementation doesn't support sound. Is this going to be added in the future?

An upcoming update for Duke Nukem 3D: Megaton Edition will add the proper credits for Duke Nukem 3D and additional credits for the JFDuke3D and EDuke32 programmers.

Like I brought up in the other thread, are the developers of the addon packs being paid for their work? Maybe they shouldn't be, but who owns those addons then?

I don't know the details on this. I talked with both Sunstorm (Duke DC, Caribbean, Duke!ZONE 2 [at least some of the loose maps], Wanton Destruction, Cryptic Passage, Route 66) and SillySoft (Nuclear Winter, Duke!ZONE 2 [Arctic Assault], Deadly Kiss) via email a few years ago about getting the add-ons released as freeware. They had this to say:

Anthony Campiti of Sunstorm said:

I'm sorry to say but the answer to all of your questions is No... We have long since moved past those original products.

Joe Wilcox of SillySoft said:

I'd have to dig up the contract. I'm pretty sure the rights returned to me in 2007 but I'd have to dig up the contract to be sure. If they did, I have no problems with it becoming freeware.

Joe Wilcox of SillySoft said:

The problem, as I said before, is that until I can get in the attic and find/dig through 10+ year old files I can't be sure of the legality of releasing them. All of those projects were done as Work for Hires with WizardWorks and while I *think* the contracts had a 10 year limit I'm not 100% certain and frankly don't need the drama if I'm wrong. Unfortunately is very low on my things to do when I get free time.

If you want to contact WizardWorks/GT/Infograms/whoever is running that show now and verify the rights sure, until them it's just got to be a back burner/when I get to it project for me.

I think I'll send both of them an email. edit: Sent.

Still trying to understand why they were taken out to begin with. They are a part of the code that they borrowed to make this port.

The main reason, I suspect, is "not giving a shit". I doubt there is a royalty-related conspiracy.

I thought you got the OK to make Sunstorm addons freeware.

I made no accusation that there was. I'm saying it would have actually required additional work, albeit small, to actually remove the names in the first place. Which is really stupid.

But didn't they make a whole new credits page? "HD" and stuff.

Actually, I don't think the credits are in the code at all. (But I've never looked at it, so I don't know for sure.) I believe they're not, because the credits screens are done purely by artwork. No text is drawn to the screen. So I suspect it wasn't purposely taken out by the developer, but one of two things happened: 1) They were too lazy to verify the credits were correct and just did the sloppiest job possible. Straight up just not giving a shit, which is believable considering they didn't credit EDuke32. OR 2) 3D Realms gave them the wrong credits. Their motives would be questionable.

No. If anything, I interpreted "moved past" as some informal "abandonware" (a term which holds no legal status) which doesn't give us the clear to do anything. WizardWorks or Atari could very well still hold the rights depending on what contracts were made.

Obviously, no one cares about them anymore. They should be distributed freely by now. Same for the Blood source. Not sure about making money off them though. If Steam got away with selling them without permission, we can distribute them freely without permission. Though that's jumping to conclusions since we aren't sure of that just yet.

I'm with Speedy. I only care about buying the addons legally in two cases:
  • To get the kickass big boxes (second-hand)
  • Or to pay the ACTUAL developers. If at this point I'm paying someone just to package up the GRP's neatly, I might as well just pirate it. The developers responsible for the content aren't getting paid anyway.

I support the spirit of your rebelliousness. Unfortunately, licensing without paying the original content creators is pervasive (usually perfectly legally because that's the contracts that are signed), like in the music industry.

It's all about the contracts. It seems that this fact of life and legality is overlooked. Content creators sold their souls to publishing corporations for years just to get their stuff out there. I am truly glad the internet exists. However, paid expansion packs still must be licensed with the developer of the main game or else it infringes their copyrights. (see: the original Nuke It)

Those upcoming Megaton credits changes look a lot better to me. Now they only have to do the code they used justice. xD

All things considered I think General Arcade are showing faith, we know they're still working on megaton so why not sit back give them a chance to correct their mistakes.

Yeah I'm gonna wait for some big patches until I give this another shot. I had pretty bad sound quality, shit mouse movement and random crashes...

I wonder if we could actually get refunds if they ended up not putting in multiplayer.

I know, which is why I wondered if the content creators should be paid at all. Basically, my point, is who owns what? 3D Realms either owns them or is licensing them, or they're trying to pull a fast one.

For sure i would want to get my money back if multi wont be done in next few months but yeah im also giving them more time before my final opinion.
Without some of the changes i posted below Megaton has not any value for me. With ' * ' i marked most important issues...

* MULTIPLAYER (Dukematch, COOP, Team Dukematch, Duke-Tag)
* binding 2 actions under one key
* default visibility to 512 - same as orginal Dos Duke
- support for gamepad
- support for joystick
- demo recording
* digital mouse axis x,y
* seperate mouse sensitivity for x, y
* mouse aim 'toggle on/off' 'hold button'
- ambient sounds on/off
- auto aim 'all weapons' 'bullets only' 'off'

The good news is that the new beta patch has the original 1.3D credits in it. The bad news is that it still doesn't credit the expansion pack developers:

For some reasons, I don't really care Megaton edition's MP part exists or not...

Because we'll have the powerful one from the godlike eduke32 in one day. :)

In this case I assume you don't need Megaton at all .. oh, right i almost forgot they add expansion pack yay!
Wonder how many things developers are gonna take from megaton edition and implement to eduke. Is there anything that was made better ?

No, and in fact it's generally going to be the other way around, and already is.

Thank god, you remember it is have expansion packs when I were said I buy this shit just because I want those damn expansions. :)

Megaton is Megaton, eduke32 still eduke32, unless there is something that eduke32 needed else it still better than Megaton, totally different targeting.

eduke32 will probably incorporate a variant of megaton's mouse controlled menus, what do the developers say about that?

Let's see who brings the most polished MP first. Eduke32 or Megaton.
Always bet on Duke.

We like the functionality but we don't like the dependence on libraries, libRocket for the layout and FreeType for the fonts.

I think I'll rather wait until all of this is properly fixed before I lay my cash down for this. As much as I would want to have another copy to go along with my other 6 copies of Duke Nukem 3D, I'd rather have a working Steam copy.

I can't understand what was the point of rushing it out. What kept them from working on MP and releasing it only when it's done?
