I want it, but what is up with all these Duke haters on sam videos?

every video I look up it's either "duke is sucking sam's dick!" or "duke's a pussy blah blah"

Are these guys putrescent DNF haters or something?

It happens a lot, no idea why.

Because aparently it's "cool" on hatin DNF, just like hating on COD. Although I liked what I saw on the videos they both are completely different games. I still prefer the classic Duke games over Serious Sam.

While that's true, it's also the case that DNF was supposed to pay homage to the 90's FPS games, and that obviously didn't happen, then along comes Serious Sam which does exactly that. So Serious Sam did what Duke Nukem didn't which makes him 'better' than Duke apparently.

I've been trying out some of the alternate online gameplay modes on SS3, and it's a shame not many people play them, it's great fun. Beast Hunt is my new favourite over coop. It kinda is coop, but it's better because you're both working with and against everyone else at the same time.

Except they are based off of different kinds of 90's FPS. Serious Sam is a lot like those nonsensical Doom (2) mods where you fought huge waves on enemies in large open areas, with almost no level design at all, with tons of ammo.
Duke was much slower and smarter, focusing much more on interesting level design and interactivity, a bit like SiN or Half-Life.
If DNF had came out and was Serious Sam 3, I would be much more disappointed than I was with the DNF we got.

IMO the best Serious Sam game yet. I do miss a couple of the weapons and the beautiful environments from TSE, but all in all it feels like a step up in most areas. Definitely looks a lot better than the HD versions. Don't at all agree that SS3 is what DNF should have been though, Serious Sam and Duke have never played ANYTHING alike. And I still liked DNF better.

I don't think anyone's saying that. Just that DNF should have been designed in such a way that it would have done for the Duke Nukem series what SS3 did for the Serious Sam series. It was well designed. DNF was not. I wouldn't want DNF to play like SS3 either. That's not the point.

More than anything, I think DNF was uneven. Parts were well designed while other parts were not IMO.
Still, doing the same for Duke means a lot more than doing it for Serious Sam, Sam doesn't have nearly as much to live up to. It was never as big, or as advanced, or as detailed as Duke was, and it still isn't.
And yes, many people have said just that, so maybe I misunderstood you.

Let's not forget that it wasn't just a matter of Duke trying to build upon what made his previous game great, and 'not living up to it'. The developers completely ignored many crucial gameplay features of Duke 3D in favour of imitating everything else on the market. So in fact, living up to a Duke game meant not changing very much at all, which means that it is actually quite easy. After all, a bunch of random people (the mod making community) have been doing just that in their spare time and for the past 14 years.

I disagree, for many people who are not in the hardcore Duke 3D fan category, and also for me, living up to the legacy of it's predecessor would require a LOT more than just a HD Duke 3D expansion. It would mean creating something that is as genre-redefying today as Duke 3D was 15~ years ago.
Also, the last in-house developed 3D Realms game came out in 1997, it's difficult to tell how many ideas they simply took from what was currently popular and how many they came up with themselves over the years, just to have other people beat them to it.
And as much as I like Duke Nukem Eternity and other mods/maps released over the years, they have done little but repeated an already set formula.

Serious Sam 3 is by no means bad, but I stopped playing it somewhere and haven't really felt like playing anymore. Unfortunately it doesn't hit that same sweet spot that The Second Encounter does for me :D

Well, at least it's better than SS2.

It definitely has a very slow start, you don't get any of the really good weapons for the first few levels, but the great thing about Serious Sam 3, is that it's in a constant state of increasing intensity. It feels as though every single fight has more/tougher enemies than the last, and that's something that's difficult to achieve throughout such a large game. I encourage you to hang in there and play through the pain, but if you can't, at least give online coop a chance so you can see the levels that way.

I don't know about that man, the map I stopped playing was not that far from the end of the game.

FFS I was uploading a video of Micky and I running through a level and after 6 hours of uploading the video it finally tells me (This video has been removed because it is too long. Sorry about that)

I can't upload videos longer than 15 minutes because I have a copyright strike against my account.

Thanks Interceptor.

Would you mind telling me next time when you're going to record a play session? I'd try to suck a bit less.

@Sangman; I take it they're going to focus on SS3 a bit longer with porting and maybe some DLC, then they're going to do something with serious sam 2. Maybe a remake or HD or something, it's not very clear. What I'd be really interested in is what they're going to do with Serious Sam after they're finished with SS2. They'd be completely free to ram up the craziness (hopefully).

For anyone who hasn't seen it, at the end of the "making of" video included in the delux edition, some guy at Croteam said that SS3 was on a small part of the saga, and that phenomenal things are coming. It then ended with this picture. Possible concept art for DLC, but I don't really want to speculate.

Edit: ok maybe a bit of speculation, if some DLC is going to be set in Paris, there's a slight chance it might bring some more humour back into the game. I'd like the replace the sledge hammer with a french stick Posted Image

I hope the DLC will be funny.
I like SS2 best, because of its jokes and fantasy style.
SS3 was quite boring for me.

Well you're in luck because Serious Sam 2 has just been released on Steam for $9.99!

I've already played it today :D

From what I know, SS2 will have a HD remake later, because Croteam themselves were never quite happy with how it turned out.

I don't really play SS for the humour, so I don't care so much about bringing it back, it's just that SS3 felt a bit meh. The Babylonian levels in TSE were amazing (at least IMO) and the high point of the series :D

I found SS2 to be the worst of the series. :/ It didn't have the heart and soul of previous games.

Okey, maybe not, but it is funny and this is what a good game should be.

A good game should be funny?

I'm quite enjoying SS3. Haven't gotten back to it in a while. Been a bit busy. I'll get to it. I'll get SS2 eventually.

And I don't know, I enjoyed TFE more than TSE. For one thing the endgame sequence and boss were way more interesting. True there is a more diverse look in TSE, but I thought the level design itself was better in TFE.

Well, I tried playing Serious Sam 2 for the first time today, and yeah it's not all that great in terms of gameplay. Visually it's still pretty good, an HD version would be redundant. I imagine if they were to do something like that it would be a more serious total remake. But wow the gameplay... I've played four or five levels and the open environments are gone, the weapons and enemies feel off for some reason, and enemies seem to spawn right next to you which is most infuriating. In the other games they'd spawn a fair distance away so you had time to adapt and plan your strategy, but in this game you start losing health and then realize there's a guy right next to you who wasn't there a moment before, ultimately leading to some very cheap feeling deaths. What horrible design. People who think SS3 deviated too far should be shot.
