Its not about pleasing everybody its about pleasing the majority and most people don't want a Stealthy, Dark, Gritty, and Serious 75 year old Duke Nukem. Maybe thats why there's so much hate for Duke Nukem 3D: Reloaded.

It seems to me you are being unfair at this point. He has already explained that the stealth is optional (i.e. you can beat the game without it), that the in game model will not look that old, etc. As for grittiness, Duke 3D was actually pretty gritty for its time. It stands to reason that a modern interpretation of it would be gritty by modern standards as well.

Maybe it's a little gritty, but not that much. When i think of gritty i think of Gears of war.

So there's the rumour that some shots were leaked, so please find them so we can discuss it at least with that insight.

I know what your talking about but i can seem to find them... i remember them being very blurry though.

His point is to modern standards it's not that gritty but to 1996 standards it is... I mean... it doesn't seem to me that strip clubs, porn shops, hookers, etc. where commonplace in games back then and this made Duke3D more "gritty" than other games of the time. Although in terms of looks I would say Quake was more gritty... but gritiness doesn't always mean desaturated colors or a restricted color scheme. Also Gears of War hadn't yet set the bar for grittiness in 1996 and people didn't necessarily like that kind of grittiness back then anyway.

Right, but I think a case can be made for Duke being grittier than Quake. In addition to flying jibs and pools of blood, there were sprites for gang graffiti, blood stains, puke, used tampons, feces, fetuses in jars, porn (though not explicit), etc. People don't see it as gritty now because they were 8-bit sprites, but the intent was there (though infused with humor), and a modern equivalent would be quite gritty.

Yeah I was editing my post to talk a bit more than that and clarify what I was talking about before you posted that. Oh btw those weren't just fetuses in jars they where aborted alien fetuses from babes who got infected but survived. They had glowing red eyes and everything :( On the other hand Quake to the standards was back then about as gritty as a NIN video especially the cardboard jewel case for it so I guess for me it would be more of a tossup. Brown rusty nails, gibs, zombies who throw chunks of themselves at you, demons, occult iconography and bloody religious symbols, etc. vs the stuff you listed for Duke3D.

Your just pissed that i'm pointing out what wrong with it

Why should I be pissed because of some internet comments? I was just pointing out the obvious ... haters gonna hate. No matter how far the product as away and no matter what we can do or say about it. Nothing more. We are mor concerned about getting a good product out. That's why we joined the team ...we love Duke Nukem 3D. Everybody on the team knew from the beginning what some reactions on the web would be. That is nothing to be cared about, tbh ... yes, feedback is more than welcome and needed for polishing ... DN3DR relies on that ... there also might be some things in the game that are disliked and what the team thought would be cool ... this will be taken into consideration when working on further build, of course ... but that is all AFTER a beta is out. Until then it must not bother us ... because we cannt change stuff because of comments from people who didn't have a glimpse at the game yet.

A fact that could have been moaned about (if it had been true) is that there won't any beta for feedback planned at all and that we do what we want without asking the community for feedback and opinions at all.

About the grittyness: The looks are a more gritty because we nowadays have the possibility to have a collapsed tunnel where once had been a plain wall that cut off the roads on Hollywood Holocaust. With rocks, debris, burning stuff.
And there could be the wreck of a pickup where once two different sized but clean crates allowed you to jump into the secret room on Hollywood Holocaust. (Please note: I made that up as an example)
This makes things more logic but gives more detail and grittyness at the same time.

The one liners we have aren't different from the ones we know from DN3DR. They are the same or have the same tone ... but they aren't forced, immature humour for preteens like in DNF.

EDIT:
I haven't seen the leaked shots yet, because I couldn't find them after the source got taken down. Had looked if they had spread already. I really hope they don't surface. Although I think they look good (if those are the ones I think that leaked) it would be hard to make clear that they are WIP, don't represent the final product nor even it's current state (they are some months old).
And no, it wasn't a "marketing stunt" or to bypass GBX media embargo.

To the admins here: if you see the shots, please remove them ASAP, GBX is not easy with thet kind of stuff. I was amazed how fast the shots got taken off some very obscure places on the web where I tthought it is impossible to take them down .... but when I went there they were already gone and a comment was posted: "They found me".

So its basically the same amount of grittiness in Duke 3D, but just is more detailed?

Also... i remember a little about the shots... someone was on a PC and it was a bit blurry.... also Duke was reloading a shotgun. Thats about all i remember

Basically yes. It looks less gritty and/or dirty than for example the Hollywood Holocause paintball arena from DNF (just using that as example because I just read through the thread where the actual DNF version was compared to the 2008 build). But please don't just imagine a cleaner version of the paintball arena ... lighting for example is totally different (outdoors it is a bit darker, but more detailed and more lightsources instead of basically one huge light illuminating the whole street).

And if you look at the layout or size of the paintball arena. Even when you remove the obstacles it wouldn't look like the street in front of the Million Dollar theatre. It would be too narrow and small for a main street ... our version is wider and less cramped ... but still not as wide as in real life, because that would be too much for mood and gameplay.

But there are details in the map for making an actual alien invasion more believable. There is one or the other car wreck on the street ... but less than the obstacles in the paintball arena.

And from the concepts you can see that the inside of the cinema is also a bit bigger and more detailed to more resemble a large cinema (again still not as huge as the real multiplex cinemas, because that would not be close to the original and would again hurt gameplay )

Yes, it will be different, but you still have an L*-shaped street and a cinema with an entrance hall, projector room, silver screen and seats ... and an arcade. :(

*) even if our L has serifs. :(

EDIT:
You see I have to describe a lot and explain in detail ... if I just said the map would be bigger and wider it could be interpreted in too many ways.

The best thing is to ask and I try to explain as good as I can and as much as I am allowed to. And when the final DLC of DNF is out people can test it ... then we shall see how the reactions are. But I assure you that we decided to do public betas to get feedback and take that into consideration for improving the game within it's goals (meaning we will improve what the majority does not like but won't turn it into an exact 1on1 conversion of DN3D). Otherwise we just had taken the license, ran away and hid under a rock and then come back with a finished product and say: eat this.

Sounds good. Especially like the part with the lightsources. Multiplayer in DNF is kind of good. I just wish that there is a mode where i can kill pigs and other stuff with my team mates. If i can put multiplayer into my DN3D mod, i will deffinently focus of players vs aliens too.

There will be some kind of horde mode for you to kill aliens and pigcops with your friends ... it is called Gangbang.

Remember, those are outdated for a few months now. The lighting basically wasn't even existant ... and rasmus, don't worry about a countdown timer ... you have that in every DM mode, it wasn't from single player. It just shows the remaining time of the match.

Reminds me of the multiplayer mode in Kingpin Life of Crime. That game was also gritty especially for its day. :(

Hopefully the MIB from GBX won't come here and make us unsee it.

Hmm, can they do that for large parts of DNF too? :(

That's what I assumed. There wasn't much to see, but I have no objections. The HUD graphics are very generic and I can see that bothering some people. It's an easy fix, though. Until we see something in motion any screenshots are misleading. Whoever made the gun models knows what he's doing.

In regards to all the post alluding to Duke Nukem 3D: Reloaded screenshots....
These screenshots have been removed at the request of Duke Nukem 3D: Reloaded team leader Frederik Schreiber.

Unfortunately Gearbox Software has put a media embargo on the Duke Nukem 3D: Reloaded project so at this point in time media is not allowed to be released.

To those who saw the screenshots: they're pretty damn cool aren't they? :(

We are a bit sorry for causing so much uproar ... we wanted to be quite until something can be shown or announced officially ... but first this thread popped up and later the screens leaked.

If that's the case... "It's time to sue your ass and chew bubblegum, and I'm all out of gum."

Anyway, I didn't get to see the screens :( . Ah well.

Yeah, it's not like we're going to be waiting for 14 years. :(

The game already exists, which means there doesn't need to be much planning and stuff, so that saves a lot of time. Can't wait until all the DNF DLC is over with because then that means we get DN3DR multiplayer beta afterwards.

That's like saying that doing a remake of an old movie is easy because "the movie already exists". There's still lots of stuff to plan and to make.

Who said we are not going to wait 14 years? :( I KID, I KID!!

I just can't help but think of Black Mesa at a time like this. Black Mesa is a project much like this and is taking a hella of a long time with no end in sight.
