I've got my 2U server quieted down a bit now... threw resistors on the two CPU fans, another on one of the chassis fans and a fan controller on the other two. Added a small cooling fan to the motherboard chipset after discovering how hot it got without it. I think the only remaining source of loudness with it is in the power supply. The damn thing has some crazy 40mm fan that can spin at 13,000 rpm if it needs to. Even though the chassis is 2U, a lot of the stuff in it still has to fit into 1U of space because there's a whole SAS backplane and 4 removable drive caddies above the system components.

I found someone selling quad core Opterons that match the TDP of the current dual cores I have in there now (68w) for only 15 bucks a piece so I bought a couple. The current CPUs in there are k8 based Opterons and the new ones are k10 based so there should be some per-core performance improvement there even though they're clocked a couple hundred MHz lower than the duals (2x2.2GHz vs 4x1.9GHz).

I've also written a simple script to display current network traffic for both of the NICs on the front LCD. On my previous server I had just programmed the LCD to say "INSERT COIN" on one line and "PRESS START" on the next and left it. :D

Still don't know wtf I'm going to do with a server with 8 CPU cores and 16 gigs of RAM though. :)

I use my 8 cores for video encoding. Since that project is finished until I can get some more hard drives at a reasonable price,

One of the things I need to do is make a backup plan for this stuff. I have a lot of stuff I don't want to lose.

A quad core i7 with hyperthreading does not constitute 8 cores. :D

Jeez, I would die if that happened to either of my cats. They're like my fluffy little children, even after having an actual child. I'm so sorry!

My condolences! Many years ago I suffered the very sudden loss of a 16-year old veteran. We came home one day to find him laying against the inside of the bathroom door. The next day he went to the vet and didn't come back. Apparently the tough guy had both FIV and feline leukemia.

Quitting WoW is already off my list. Quitting caffeine is going to be tougher. Been on this stuff for 18 years. If I go cold turkey like WoW, I'll probably go crazy. Tried the ween yourself off of WoW approach, which didn't work. So with caffeine I might have to quit cold turkey. I'm going to go insane when that happens.

My link

Scroll up to find out how withdrawal affected some people depending on how much caffeine they were on.

My best friend called me to say that he might have a tumor in his brain. I'm not saying cats dieing isn't shitty, but when your best friend who is 24 and has a baby daughter tells you he might have a brain tumor, anything about cats dieing is significantly belittled. Also, apparently my Dad is lucky my Mom made him see the doctor yesterday because he has pneumonia.
Good thing I'm flying back home for Thanksgiving but I wasn't expecting to have to deal with this shit during my vacation.

Insomnia is sure a great pastime. Don't want to sleep, but neither do anything because you're sleepy. YouTube crawling is one way to pass more time before sleep kicks in.

Humans dying is shitty to you, cats dying is shitty to cats. Dog howl when their pack members die too, PETA are embarrassing with their over reacting but animal treatment from humans is sickening if we knew half the truth, so better to have someone look out for them than nobody. I feel sorry for animals stuck on the same planet as humans, were nasty dangerous, selfish creatures we make great white sharks look like choir boys CHOIR BOYS!

^That, sir, is one of the best posts I have read in a long time...

On a slightly more upbeat note (which will more than likely be largely ignored) I decided to copy the contents of the CON file I wrote for my mod into Word and do a word count;
Posted Image
I know people have written more lines, but that is by far my own personal record broken. Why am I posting this here? I didn't think it was worth cluttering one of the Duke related threads as it isn't really important to anyone but me. I only bother to count lines, the rest of it won't be counted accurately by Word.

I just ordered Rule of Rose, a PS2 game, it's a survival horror, unfortunately, it was rather expensive as the game is banned in my country, so it had better be good, still, I suppose it can't be worse than Silent Hill 2, I was very dissapointed with that, as I did rather enjoy the first one. Damn, why did Capcom have to axe Clock Tower and Haunting Ground, those franchises really need to come back - and with everyone being sick of FPS, now would possibly be a good time to try it.

Crashing back to reality, as far as the bad news is concerned, you have my condolences... At least, I think that's the right word.

The hubris of this...you really think that humans have such an effect on the world? Sure, humans are aggressive consumers but we are not anything special. Nature consumes and no matter how little or much any person does to reduce or increase animal suffering, it won't matter. Nature has a way of balancing out, there is an order to the universe and evolution is part of that order. Survival of the fittest and the circle of life/consumption.
Besides, the way humans treat other humans is something people should talk about, not how animals are treated; Yes, animals develop a level of intimacy but their cognitive skills tend to be (I'll be honest and say I've met people dumber than my friend's dog) lower than humans' and they are not entirely aware of their own mortality in the same way we are. A dog dies and it has time to think "Well, did I pass on my genetic code?" a human dies and wonders what is next? what was the point? have I been a good person? have I accomplished something worthwhile? [exegi monumentum...] The Kubler-Ross 5 stages of death don't apply to animals and that is what is different about my friend having a brain tumor and a cat reaching the end of its short life.
I'll admit that human-animal relationships are important and people do feel like animals are like family to them, and that is shitty when they die; but you can't have the same relationship to your pet cat or dog or bird as you can a man you grew up with or your father.

Im sorry but this is just typical human arrogance, how can you presume to know the functions of a consciousness other than your own, when we still don't even know fully how our own minds work? A dog knows its going to die in advance, we need doctors to tell us, dogs dream as do we. You cannot percieve how any animal except yourself percieves death, you just can't, have you ever heard a dog howl when its master passes? Have you ever had a dog?. Never assume to know all the answers, we have been doing that forever and the goal posts keep shifting meaning we need new answers to what we once thought we knew.
Only recently have we discovered that Orcas have "cultures" and many differant ones at that, this was once a trait deemed only possible from humans. I think there is a lot more to life than survival of the fittest, because in the end of the day its a fruitless pursuit as the planet with all life on it will one day be destroyed, so what does it matter who lived or died or had the most children, will the fittest survive the end of the world? No.

We humans have the potential for greatness and incredible empathy for all life, yet this potential is missed by most and ignored by others in favour of short term advantage by the richest and greedyest people on the planet. Everything was one and will be returned to one someday, so if you can't respect animals for their right to inherit the planet with us with strong rights, then you don't respect a part of yourself in the future, which might as well be now as time is a human construct.

I kind of wonder how some of these silly videos on Youtube have millions of views. This one guy is acting really weird, and you can see that the video has been edited every 5 seconds or so because his head is in a different place than it was a second ago.

The same reason that the Twilight series has millions of fans, even though it is complete crap. Being successful doesn't require having a quality product. Sometimes all it takes it shoveling out the right crap at the right time to the right group of idiots. Which is easier said than done.

I've been trying to shovel out the right kind of crap on YouTube for years, still can't seem to manage it... Wait a moment, crap, that's something I haven't tried, you never know, it might work.

You can actually buy subscribers and views as far as I am aware, I don't know wether it's a scam or what because I don't believe in doing that, nor do I believe in the partnerships despite them constantly offering them to me these days.

On another note, I just beat Rule of Rose for the first time, it was a decent game, though the combat system left a lot to be desired (The Devs admitted this fault though), I fail to see, though, where the EU Politician that banned it in the UK saw Paedophilia and Sadomassochism in the game, or, at least, in a way that would warrant a ban, there's me thinking that this game was going to be evil and I would end up thinking "This one overstepped the line, turn it off!" and it was actually quite tame.

Speaking of crap, that reminds me of something I was looking at today. I've been a huge Cyndi Lauper fan for years now, and I've always been very iffy on Lady Gaga, and I'd feel like she was always riffing off something Cyndi had done before and even pretty much based almost all of her music off the things she had already done. However, today I really sat and looked at it for a bit, and almost everything Lady Gaga has done has been lifted in some way from the likes of Cyndi Lauper, Cher, Grace Jones, and Madonna. What I don't get is how people think she is shocking.. she ain't no Wendy O. Williams, I tell ya.

A good is example is Lady Gaga's Born This Way which really sounds like Madonna's Express Yourself.

Eh, that's old news about "Born This Way", people have been saying that since it was released. But in defense of Gaga, even though her influences are very obvious (that song being an extreme case), she has made some good and original songs, and she is a damned good singer. IMO her voice is much better than those other artists you listed. While I don't like her personally, I respect her talent.

I hadn't seen it before. I have never been a fan of lady gaga, but now i have an argument why not to like her. Lady gaga is still a good singer with a lot of talent, and that is why she has so many fans. But i don't think she's THAT good.

My cat normally sleeps in the clothes basket, but since I moved that into my closet, he was confused for a bit then he just jumped on my bed and slept there. That was my plan all along.

Cats was an awful musical, it had no plot, and most of the songs weren't that good, except for the last one, but by that time I was almost asleep so I couldn't appreciate it to its full potential. I have no idea why it's regarded so well.

The plotlessness of Cats is due to the fact that it was based on a book of poems about cats by T.S. Eliot. I don't know why people like it, either. Maybe there are even more furries out there than we realize.

My fiance's into the whole Twilight/vampire craze, but in light of the fact that she got her B.S from A&M and is about to get her Master's from SMU before she's even legal drinking age, I'd hardly call her an "idiot". Don't get me wrong, I don't like the franchise any more than you do, but someone's interest in dumb shit isn't necessarily a reflection of their intelligence. It just means they like dumb shit, which I'm sure everyone's guilty of in at least some small capacity.

Actually you've got a point here. After all everyone here either either idealises such a hollow character as Duke Nukem or enjoys the mindless slaughter of aliens on a computer screen.

I would go so far to venture that there is actually some measurable amount of quality in our beloved Duke Nukem video games versus something lacking quality like Twilight or Taylor Swift music, but humans have not come up with the necessary means, method, and objectivity required to do such a thing.

I recently started playing Team Fortress 2, given that it was free. I don't like Steam and I don't like Team Fortress 2, but it was something to mess about with when I was bored. I am now banned from just about every server. I always got banned for cheating as soon as I got to the top of the board - I wasn't cheating - so I started cheating, if you're gonna get banned for cheating, you may as well cheat right.

Can't be sure I'll bother playing it anymore, the novelty has worn off.
