I don't think people should complain about carrying only two weapons unless they have spent a lot of time with the game (not just a 15 minute demo). It's not just a question of realism, it's something that has a big impact on level design. Limiting the player to 2 weapons at a time gives the level designers more control over the gameplay experience, which could be either good or bad, depending on other factors we don't know about.

You should work that into duke plus! :D

I like the two weapon thing, as long as it's done like: One in hand, one slung, pistol on the hip and 2-3 type of nades. That's realistic enough, gives plenty of options to the player but still forces him / her to choose "assult rifle + rail gun or do I take this shotty?".

Well thats it. Thats what I waited for since I first read something about DNF back in the last decade, when it was on the Quake 2 engine, and I was 15 or so. From what I've seen I think its pretty duke-ish. But you coudnt see much of it. I think my fellow workmates will think I'm crazy, when I tell them that Duke is coming 2011.

That 2 weapon system.. well.. I dont know. It can be good, it can be bad, only time will tell. Yeah, its not very dukeish. That bothers me. But it can help to raise the fun!

Well, we know something.
One of the devs said on that live stream that in dnf we will get all dn3d weapons plus normal weapons and alien weapons.
So my theory is that Duke has his own arsenal of weapons and then soldiers have their own class of weapons while aliens have theirs.
What is truly cool is that you can actually pick them up and use those too if you want. That imo doesn't ruin the game but adds to it.
Back in dn3d you used to find all weapons in precise areas for each level. This time you will do the same with your weapons but also have the chance to pick up alien and human weapons when you find a body.
What does make me wonder a bit is why did they invent that golden pistol? What was wrong with duke's classic pistol? Wouldn't you have loved to see the classic dn3d weapons remade as faithful as possible in 3d for dnf? I don't see why does everything need to look different from dn3d. I don't even get why they've added those gloves on his hands... Doesn't anybody find those gloves too "kids action hero" like? Oh well, some people just love to invent new useless shit.

Does he only carry 2 weapons total? or 2 weapons including his pistol as his default weapon?

I'd have to agree with everyone else that it doesn't seem very duke like, but we are finally going to get DNF after 10+ years so shouldn't we just be happy that we're getting duke nukem forever?

I'm more concerned if we can make our own maps or not because i think custom maps is what made duke 3d go on as long as it has. But that's just my opinion and I am sure there was more to Duke 3d's success.

I don't want to play Duke Nukem 3D 2. I want to play Duke Nukem 4. A game series has to progress with each sequel, not carbon copy everything from the previous game. I'm glad there are aesthetic changes.

He carries two weapons (probably pistol and then whatever other weapon you want to carry...but who knows the combination options) and there are separate triggers each for setting tripmines and pipebombs. So 4 weapons technically.

Neither do I. I surely hope that in the final retail version, duke is not handicapped to carrying only 2 weapons at a time. I recently played a game that implemented that - Singularity, and carrying only 2 weapons at a time is a complete complete frustrating experience, not to mention it neither adds strategic elements nor realism. It was utter frustating, and to call it in one word, bullshit. I dearly hope that Gearbox doesn't make that mistake with DNF.

I never found much use for the trip mines in D3D but it might have more of a use in DNF hopefully.

Well of course it's a modern FPS, we didn't wait 15 years to get a really nice HRP for classic Duke. If we want classic Duke gameplay, that's what the old game (and mods thereof) are for.

I'm not saying it's necessarily a good thing to be limited to 2 weapons at a time, but we shouldn't reject it just because it doesn't conform to our old concept of Duke.

A real badass just takes what he needs, he doesn't encumber himself with everything he can find like a neurotic packrat. And it's not just a realism issue, it has to do with his image. I'm guessing that the player model will show whatever Duke is carrying, in which case having a large number of weapons would look ridiculous. Even so, two weapons does seem like a very strict limit, but when you consider all the things he has to be able to do while carrying them (crawl around in vents, sprint, jump, fondle babes) it starts to sound reasonable.

Yeah you make a valid point. Travis Touchdown however is an Otaku badass and he carries around all his beam Katanas with him in NMH2 :D Though Beam Katanas do take up less space then Devestator or RPG. :D:D:D

I guess what meant by modern FPS was "REAL LIFEY FPS" since we've had this inverted-renaissance where everything has to be super realistic. It can have a Sci-Fi story, but it still has to conform to OMG THIS HAS TO BE THE WAY IT WOULD BE IN REAL LIFE NOT AN ARCADEY FUN TIME ROMP OF ALL TIME. That's what I think I meant when I wrote that. Like OMG ONE SHOT KILLS FO REELZ! or LOLZ WE GOTTA MAKE IT SO REAL TACTICS ARE THE ORDER OF THE DAY! STEALTH FPS FTW!! Dunno I just think it's funny. :D

View PostDeeperThought, on Sep 4 2010, 12:58 PM, said:

What would NOT be cool is if you frequently encounter situations where you picked the wrong two weapons, then you have to run back through the level and find weapons you dropped. But that's a level design, issue, and hopefully they know what they're doing.

And yes, if I take a Knife to a gun fight and have to track backwards through the level and commit the to a different faucet for the job then I must be crazy because that's so broken. I have a whole in my heart and I agree!

Yeah that's the only time I found them fun was in the Multiplayer Portion of Dukematching the original Duke3D. :D

Forgive me if I sound utterly happy for the news, it's the best news I heard since I recieved my ___________ papers from the judge from my insane first.

I noticed from the PAX vids , that theres a weapon melee attack ... this better not replace the Mighty foot.
other then the fact that the vid shows the game on the shitbox 360 , it looks pretty badass.

It's confirmed now? It must be since what it says on the 3drealms forums, right? So I guess that means we'll be seeing DNF in the future afterall?

When people said the graphics need a polish, did they mean the graphics were outdated, unfinished, or both?

They said it's pc with 360 gamepads. The game seems to have the 360 input detection and when you plug in a 360 controller it turns on all the menus and controls used on the 360 console. It would not be the first game that does that.
Anyway the graphics seemed so-so from the live stream and a few pics that I've seen in higher res...
To me this looks like 3drealms shit that got leaked with a few things more polished. As for the assets and the story of the game, from what it seems, the game is going to use exactly the leaked plot and the assets that got leaked in screenshots.
I can't believe that they are not going to replace all of that, it's crazy.
Even the duke nukem model is the one that we got to see in all stages of development.
I even have pics of him untextured. This is the first time we ever get to see a commercial game made out of assets that we already saw before they were done, lol. There are so many unique things that come with the fact that dnf is now getting released!

Hey, would it be considered extreme to call that DNF reveal live stream, THE WORST and most amateurish piece of broadcast ever to be made by human kind?
Would I also be extreme if I said that I hated that arrogant high pitched, loud mouth fat geek of a presenter?
She was terrible and she managed to annoy me just for existing and living on the same planet as I am. I won't even go into details about how much she annoyed me with her style of fake enthusiasm and her high pitched voice always yelling and being so confused and exaggerating all the time about various shit that nobody seemed to care for...
But the worst anger that this stream has produced me aside from the OBVIOUSLY broken microphone, was that FUCKING RETARDED CAMERAMAN.
Did anybody else notice how he fucking managed to avoid every single little interesting thing in that demo while he filmed people playing demos?
I was literally going WTF every 5 seconds when I saw how he was FUCKING spinning in one foot with his gay ass motherfucking low quality camera.
That mother fucker did not care AT ALL about DNF. I could even hear his thoughts saying. "Omfg at all these ugly nerds here playing this piece of shit game.
Why the fuck do I have to film this shit game and why the fuck is all this commotion for a videogame?"
Man I seriously lost weight and years of sanity because of how much that stream managed to piss me off!

What the bloody hell are you going on about....every single goddamn thing you just bitched about has absolutely no validity whatsoever- were you even watching the same stream as I was? There was only one stream, no??

For real- with each moronic point you just made, it seemed as though you were attempting to pull shit further and further out of your ass.

For starters, the presenter was in no way arrogant, high pitched or fat. Nor was she any of the other negative adjectives you savagely threw in her direction. I found her to be cute, entertaining, informative, and efficient- everything I'd want from someone in her position. In fact, I'll admit that I found her to be so attractive and charming that I was *almost* split between the Duke footage and her.... :D She also seemed to genuinely be intrigued and interested by the game, so how you're coming up with the "fake enthusiasm" shit is far beyond me.

You might also need a hearing aide, 3dwizard, if you're going to bitch about the audio quality as well. I had zero problems understanding anything that was being said, and even if I missed word or two, all the juicy info and tidbits were repeated over and over, so such a thing was never an issue.

Finally your quips about the cameraman......how do you know he "avoided" all the good stuff? He was simply trying to get as much varied footage as possible. Rather than sit by one monitor and watch as one player shoots the same gun at one monster for ten minutes, wouldn't you rather see as much of the game as possible?? He did as good a job as he possibly could have, no complaints there from me.

And wtf are you fucking psychic, saying you can read his thoughts?? How the fuck can you determine someone's attitude about, well, ANYTHING, judging from a video feed SHOT BY THEM. No, voice, no facial expressions, no nothing to base your retarded assessment upon.

You seriously need to take a fucking chill pill; for me watching that feed was the most excitement and happiness I had experienced in quite some time....and I don't live anywhere near an unfulfilling life.

The only thing that pissed me off was your irrational, hyperbole-laced rant which failed to conform with anything resembling reality. Sheesh. :D

Issues man, Issues! You know what they are? No? Well you have them! All of them!
After reading your post I don't think even Duke himself would be able to fix all your issues.
Just move along please, that's all I can say in reply.

Looks like someone isn't married or has a girlfriend :D I also thought the girl was a little bit faking everything, the amature never worked with a camera.(when she is holding the mic, interview etc) You just need to look at the total picture of this stream. And well i don't know the girl but she can't present/entertain, so it pretty sucked. And the cameraman well i sorry to say but i think he needed pills for his arm or something like that.

But after seeing DNF got me really happy for that day even with the piece of shit stream and the boring girl and cameraman.

Why? carrying two guns worked in Goldeneye perfectly and seem just fine in the May 2009 trailer.

BTW STOP complaining about consoles versions, there great

Crysis only let you carry 2 guns (plus duel wielding handguns and grenades) and that turned out to be a great game.

The two gun thing just doesn't seem to fit a Duke game. I can handle it for single player though, but I hope that isn't the case multiplayer. If it is, I hope someone makes a multiplayer mod, that allows you to use all the guns. I havn't seen any multiplayer footage at all, I wonder if multiplayer has even been worked on yet. OH and I hope I don't have to use steam to play the game, I HATE STEAM.

Even if it is on Steam you won't need it with the retail version. Gosh darn Steam haters....

Also, I didn't mind the stream at all, besides the fact that it didn't show anything I wanted to see.

I just that in the final retail version you can use all weapons and not just 2 weapons. Using just 2 weapons at a time is just retarded .

In order to maximize sales, you have to support the 360 controller and the consoles. George made a great post on Shacknews about the decision. If you are limited to x number of buttons, you have to cut stuff that would have been kept back in 1996.
I love the idea of being able to hold as many weapons as I please but the dynamics of the controller limit that and that is a design decision based on the potential of sales to the console generation. You can't blame them for that.

Until you play the game, you can't really complain too much. The fact that the pipe bomb and trip mines are set up as quick keys is nice. It insures playability throughout (pipe bombs used for breaking walls). The trip mines have historically been used in MP as traps so making them a quick key actually enhances that.

the game will have puzzles and kinds where you have to think to get through. that could be a good reason for only having 2 weapons?
