Roland SC-55 Music Packs "Updates 'n stuff"
#361 Posted 14 June 2023 - 07:33 AM
Rise of the Triad music pack rerecorded and updated to V2.0! Now supporting metadata loop tags for seamless in-game looping! Available in FLAC, OGG, and MP3 as usual (MP3 does not support loop tags).
While I don't know of any ROTT source ports at the moment that actually support metadata loop tags, I have it on good authority that Rise of the Triad - Ludicrous Edition not only supports custom music packs but also loop tags! Another good reason to pick it up.

Rise of the Triad music pack update!
Now updated to V2.1. Update notes:
Some notes on ROTT Ludicrous Edition's music implementation:
Now updated to V2.1. Update notes:
- Renamed all music files to match Ludicrous Edition's filenames and subfolders. Just unzip the OGG pack into the game directory and overwrite the existing files. (this overwrites the default MIDI music "1994 Original (MIDI)" from the game so back it up if you want to save it)
- Renumbered the tracklist order in metadata tags to match LE's music filenames.
- LE does not support FLAC files (yet?) so only the OGG music pack will work for now.
Some notes on ROTT Ludicrous Edition's music implementation:
- It has emulated OPL music (not digital recordings) but they sound nothing like the original OPL sounds in DOS. I wonder if they had to use an inferior emulator due to conflicting licenses with the better ones or something?
- Music is replaceable but only the contents of the "music\midi" folder are worth replacing because it alone has all 34 music tracks while the ROTT 2013 Hulshult music ("music\rott2013" folder) only has 28 tracks.
- FLAC music files aren't supported.
- OGG music is supported and metadata loop tags are recognized and function correctly.
- Despite the above, the default MIDI music OGG files contain no metadata whatsoever (let alone loop tags) and so do not loop seamlessly. But any music pack with loop tags will.
- You can't make new subfolders for a collection of new alternate music packs. The game won't recognize it. You have to replace its own files with the exact same filenames.
- If a music file is not recognized or missing, the game will fallback to the built-in OPL emulation.

Thanks for doing this! It'd be great if your edition were used for the final release. Truth be told, I dunno why they even bothered to come up with their own version. They might add custom music by the end of July, maybe.
Besides that, another thanks for the reminder about the Ludicrous Edition. It's on my wishlist, but I didn't know a demo was released.
