Roland SC-55 Music Packs  "Updates 'n stuff"

Haven't forgotten about the extended Grabbag, but here's a loaded release for you. I've uploaded the uncompressed version of the Doom soundtrack without any boosted volume levels (for the picky audiophiles), upon request. OGG, MP3, and FLAC packs are available.

I've also recorded and uploaded the soundtrack for Hocus Pocus!

Available in OGG, MP3, and FLAC. Tracks include metadata loop tags (except for MP3). The original game obviously doesn't support music packs, but rf` made a fantastic 3d Hocus Pocus mod for Doom 2 called Hocusdoom and when played with ZDoom/GZDoom, the music pack works great! Only issue is for some reason it ignoes the LOOP_END metadata tag. I'm looking into it. It's not a problem with the tracks that I can see, though.

Any reason the ROTT pack isn't available in FLAC? You'd think it would be easier to hold onto a lossless copy like FLAC, then just churn out oggs and mp3s for the iTards when needed.

It's an older pack from when I first started. I lost the source files and only made OGGs. This was back before I thought it would be feasible to have FLAC and MP3 alternatives. I have to rerecord them anyway along with Blood, Shadow Warrior, and the Duke3D expansions.

I really love the packs, but I'd rather not waste space with OGG, keep us updated.

^Unless you want to, you know, play the tracks in-game. Not everything is as badass as EDuke32 to support FLAC.

So I've been redesigning my website to be mobile friendly. I know that this website doesn't really need it as I doubt anyone will be downloading these packs with their data. I guess you can't even download anything on iOS anyway. But I'm doing it anyway for practice. Does it work for everybody?

Actually, I've designed it for Android Galaxy S3 (my phone) dimensions specifically and haven't set it for other resolutions yet, but does the design seem coherent like it should be or are things jumbled around? Any web gurus here have any suggestions?

Doom II SC-55 Music Pack available

Both volume boosted and raw recordings in OGG, MP3, and FLAC formats. Tracks contain loop metadata tags for seamless looping which works in Doom/ZDoom and Chocolate Doom. The only exception is MP3 which doesn't retain the data. All songs fadeout when played back in a media player for a great listening experience.

There is an issue with at least ZDoom/ZDoom where it's not respecting the LOOP_END tags so the songs fadeout. I'm looking into it. It's strange because the Doom 1 tracks loop fine.

At any rate, enjoy!

Awesome! Just a minor thing but on the main page you have misspelled Shadow Warrior as Shaddow Warrior.

Thanks for spotting that!

Sorry, guys. I'm temporarily removing the Doom II and Hocus Pocus soundtracks due to there being incorrect metadata loop tag values. I mistakenly set the sample values in a 48Khz session which, after downsampling to 44.1Khz for FLAC/OGG/MP3, rendered all the calculate loop values completely out of whack. I'll need to recalculate each of the 33 tracks between the two soundtracks. Shouldn't take more than a couple days. Sorry for the mixup!

Not sure if it's a bug or not, but The Demon's Dead has ~2 seconds of silence at the beginning, unlike all of the other tracks.

Ah you're right. Forgot to shave that off. Is that the only track you've found that on? It's not a huge deal as the loop tag will ignore it anyway, but I'd still like to keep things consistent.

Doom II and Hocus Pocus V 1.1 soundtracks are up! Now with proper loop points! Please let me know if you encounter any more issues.

The Doom II music pack has been updated to V1.2 which adds the duplicate song files that I forgot. This almost doubles the file size but it's necessary, otherwise many levels would just play the original MIDI data instead. The only unique duplicates are D_DDTBL2 and D_DDTBL3 which actually have slight variations. I only fixed a stuck note bug at the end. The others are straight copies.

Unfortunately, this means that the music pack has almost doubled in size. But that's the price of completeness, I suppose.

Not so! If you compress the audio files or an uncompressed zip file in a 7z file with proper settings, the increase goes away. The 808 MB Doom 2 pack compressed to 471 MB.

Sweet. Thank you for enlightening me in the greater ways of file compression.

Wait hang on. Do 7z files work with source ports?

I doubt it.

As far as the pack for Doom is concerned:
At least ZDoom/GZDoom accepts 7-Zip packages, even though file endings would need to be renamed to .pk7. I use it for compressing my wads, and it makes a huge difference regarding size.

My packs also work with Chocolate Doom and Doomsday as well, though. I want to keep cross-compatibility with as many ports as possible. Then again, apparently you currently have to jump through some hoops to get Chocolate Doom to play them. The author is working on that, though. As for Doomsday, people will just be extracting to a certain folder anyway. I suppose (G)ZDoom is the only one that utilizes the "MUSIC" folder and can execute the ZIP out of the box....

I almost have to apologize for releasing this, however I must complete every necessary music pack with the SC-55! This is one of those special exceptions I make for a game that didn't necessarily support the SC-55. Super 3D Noah's Ark used the Wolf3D engine, however it was re-engineered to utilize MIDI files that playback on OPL chipsets rather than the Adlib-only IMF format that id used. Because of that, recording this pack was very easy, and since the songs were quite short, seemed worth my while. Almost. Not the best music in the planet, but it might sound better coming out of the SC-55 than the other devices you've heard it on. When Super 3D Noah's Ark is supported by ECWolf or what have you and gets digital music pack support, here is the music pack.

Then you could 7-zip an uncompressed zip file. You would want to make the 7-zip archive solid anyway, which would be a performance nightmare for a port to use directly.

Any chance that somebody has SC-88? I think SC-88 was the original one for Duke3D.. At least grabbag sounds much more similar to the official mp3 :(

The SC-88 is what Lee Jackson used for the redbook audio track on Atomic, but the game's score was composed and engineered for a regular SC-55.

I don't have one. Wish I did. Would be fun to mess around with. Along with the SC-88pro, SC-8820, and SC-8850.

I used to have an SC-88 Pro, the same as Lee and Bobby used when composing for the game but I sold it... Namely because it sounded identical to the SCC-1 and SC-55 aside from the additional patches which sucked anyway. Said patches are not used by any of these games as far as I know so you're not missing anything.

My Yamaha MU would eat them for a light snack anyway... (Considers reworking DN3D MIDIs for Yamaha synths)

Out of curiosity, why would you want an SC-88, Pro, 8820 and 8850? They're practically identical.

No they aren't. The 88 and 88pro are granted. But the 8820 and 8850 are another level altogether. There are so many more patches than the stock Sound Canvas 300 something and they are of much higher quality.

Thus my implication was to just get an 8850 or 8820, they almost caught up for a second with that one. Running SC-88 tracks you won't hear a difference on an 8820 really, they didn't even add SPDIF as far as I remember.

My assumption being that you wishing you had one and not doing so by now must be based on cost as they aren't exactly uncommon, it'd be cheaper just to buy one module. This is the same reason I bought a sampling drum machine - so I didn't have to dedicate a room and money I didn't have to amassing a huge stack of devices I didn't really need.

I know the patches aren't used by any games. It would be fun to compose with, though. That is their purpose in the long run. I didn't mean I wanted to get all of them, though.

High Treason. You don't have PM set up for your account so I figured this was a place to contact you about something. Many years ago when I had my Cascio CZ-101 connected to my computer I had a piece of software that transposed any keys you played into a scale of your choice and sent those notes back out in real time. It made anyone sound talented. In your years of playing around have you run across a program like that?

BTW, I listened to those songs of yours that you linked to in another thread. Some of those were pretty good. Sorry for the slightly off topic post.
