I mean, either you're too poor to afford kids (or lets be honest, even attract a mate), or you're one of those top dogs that mates with all the women. I don't see why this isn't self-correcting, though. People with damaging mutations are less likely to have biological children of their own (i.e. the mutations don't keep getting passed on). From an evolutionary standpoint, it doesn't matter whether the mutation is directly fatal or whether it leads to choices that are incompatible with having kids. The result is the same. And I think you'll find that if you look into the subpopulations who do still have high fertility rates, those subpopulations are having kids at more traditional ages (i.e. not old). Sure, it will be scary for a while. There will be a dip in human population, especially in more advanced countries. Societal collapses and reformations seem likely. But all the while, the subpopulations who are still having lots of kids will continue to grow exponentially and the overall population will regain lost ground and grow again (to the extent possible minus war, starvation, disease and so on).

I don't have any data to support this, but I suspect the explosion of autism is at the expense of what used to be called plain mental retardation. They've lumped a bunch of those self harming screeching people in with the high IQ nerd types. Someone could probably tease out from the data which is which, and see where there's been an increase. Anecdotally, I know a lot of couples with profoundly intellectually disabled children. They look normal, but they act insane and will never live independently. When I talk to older people, they almost never heard of anyone having a kid like that.
