Midnight Arrival

one of the reasons I quit doing reviews

butthurt friends of a mapper doxing me in pm's and threatening to kill me, my child, and rape my wife.

i didn't feel legitimately threatened, but I was getting tired of that kind of bullshit over some fucking game.

So now I don't quite understand what is the conversation about - Colonel Consequences friends intimidated someone who wrote a review about this map that they didn't like?

I wrote the review for the map on the cgs map hosting site.
CC didn't really say much, other than he disagreed on a few points, but he let it go. His friends didn't & they got all bent out of shape because they didn't agree with the score, nor some of the things I pointed out about the map that could be game play issues.
I was an admin at cgs at the time
They got ahold of my i.p. and tracked it to the town I lived in & scrubbed my post history to find out I was married and had a child.
CC's friends went to the cgs website and started spamming the "contact admin" messaging system there to flood my inbox, making threats towards myself and my family over my "reviews with bad information and low scores", "and that I had better change them if I knew what was good for me", etc., etc., lots of violent threats, etc., etc.
Never changed the review or the score. I wasn't intimidated by a bunch of angsty teens, but this, among other things, simply made me tired of dealing with it.

Wasn’t the review just a red herring, and were they just some people know you IRL, but didn’t want to reveal themselves? I mean, come on, this story is the craziest horseshit I ever read. How can someone go this far?

right?
imagine someone on the internet blowing things out of proportion, over-reacting, and threatening people.
that never happens

at least it occurred several years before 'swatting' became a thing

you should go back to your game of map guessing before this gets any more derailed than it already is (sorry for bringing it up)

Here's a screenshot, although surely an easy one:

No, no takers? C'm'on. Golden oldie. Not on MSDN I don't think (off the top of my head at least), but formerly rather popular via DN-R (and before DN-R), and it's on CGS.

Hmm. Is this from 96-98 era? Looks rather ancient to me.

It's a 1996 map. Spread pretty widely at the time I believe, and was included on most compilation/shovelware CD's that I know of.

The screen itself looks very generic though, as this looks like a typical 1996 map "decorations". The only thing that could be distinguishable here is really the slightly raised part of the street on the left of the screen, with the curb having a leftover building facade texture.

Every other area in that map would be an instant giveaway though I feel like, so the screen feels just right when you know the answer. There really weren't user maps that 'iconic' in the city style at the time (although design-wise it's up to the standards of user mapping in the era, with misaligned textures and unfairly hidden routes). You guys can keep trying and guess, as it may prove hard on my end to access my PC again for more screenshots by tonight, but I can drop hints (like I just did again right now).

i don't remember the author's name, but is it the guy who wrote some how-to's guides of map-making at the time? His name was George or Geoff or smthn.

You're thinking of Brett Gmoser I believe but no, that's not his map. Not too far off in terms of general style, though. Map from my screenshot came out barely a month after the release of the game, hence its popularity. It's also way easier to find on CGS than it should be.

Nice one. For the record, the reason why I was saying it was easier to find on CGS than it should be is because it's reviewed twice there, under different scores, near the very top of the map listings. Somehow (go figure), I expected maybe Sanek out of all people would find it real quick, or maybe Gerolf.

Side note but that screenshot from Night Fall above is absolutely gorgeous in all its simplicity.

No idea, but it definitely looks like some early pre-2000 map, probably themed around some hotel or just a town.
