@Radar: I'm pretty sure no one was thinking about race until you brought it up.

I'm just waiting for certain sorts to figure out a way to turn this into a gun grab. Someone is gonna get shot over a roll of toilet paper by some coinless crackhead who totally wasn't doing it on the promise of payment, so you're gonna have to give up your guns.

Probably.

I dunno.

Keep bickering please.

I think cops are gonna be plenty busy and won't have the resources to go around grabbing guns from innocent people. They can ask people to turn them in, but the smart people will just ignore that. Trump would veto any national legislative attempt, so we are talking about individual states and jurisdictions. However, we almost certainly will see people selling off nonessential parts of their gun collections at inflated prices, without using background checks etc. Would not be surprised if there were a crackdown on that.

What's wrong with it then.

I think right now... people will be hoarding guns if anything, not selling. My mate who bought an AR-15 last weekend told me the gun shop was PACKED.

Sure but when the gun shops are cleaned out, lots of people will be sitting on large firearm collections (mostly from before the rush), and they will be sorely tempted to sell off parts of their collection for huge profit, especially if they are layed off and need the money.

Don't know if anyone's going to go for a gun grab, its possible. People basically only pay attention to their local legislators whenever they try to pull one of those. I think its more likely that they'll just go for some other way of restricting rights that isn't watched like a hawk by several large-ish organizations.

Either way it will be the same old sell: Give up your freedoms for more safety, the government loves you, they'll look after you, it's all fine.

I wonder, with all this stupid hoarding of toilet paper, do we actually have any evidence that China has stopped producing and shipping it?

Who needs a gun grab when all you need is a large enough crisis to forcibly quarantine the entire country. ;)

They can't force people to do anything.

I do think there is a certain charm to that behavior in the States. In France, the police are already beating quarantine violators. That's not acceptable at all. Luckily, you could never pull that off in America.

Well, I have to admit, it is getting scary.
500k people, in Canada, are asking for Employment Insurance already, they were fired in the last three days. Good luck to them, getting the money they need.
The deaths toll in Ontario doubled. From one to two.
The liquor stores are kept open, since they are essential service. Food stores are also open, but as expected, are full of empty shelfs.
We got 67 emails, begging for a job, just today.
Yes, an unknown, they call it "novel', virus is scary, but the resulting asinine actions of governments, world wide, is truly terrifying.
Last, I can't believe, even churches need to close. What the fuck? Believers will give you their 'literal' arm or leg, for a reasonable cause, but not their intrinsic belief.

Medical workers exposed to the coronavirus had been self-quarantining, but this week state and city health officials issued new guidance recommending that hospital workers stay on the job until they show symptoms of the virus.

...

Dr. Katz, the head of New York City’s public hospitals, said he understood fears about having to keep working after being exposed. He defended the policy by saying the virus was already widespread, so workers exposed in a hospital setting were not any more exposed than anybody on the subway.

Sure, and being treated by someone who knows they have the virus is equivalent to riding in the same subway car ten feet away from someone who probably doesn't have it. Oh, and they are re-using masks now and might run out completely.

I don't live in NY, but, if this is the kind of decision-making going on around the country, it re-affirms my stance that one should not attempt to see a doctor unless it's your only hope of survival. Definitely do not stand in a line somewhere to be tested -- there's absolutely no point in that other than possibly being infected.

Fired? Or temporarily laid off? Usually someone is fired if they break the rules or do something bad at work.

Laid off, then, indefinitely. But Walmart is planning to hire 100k. Amazon’s staff work at overdrive speed. See the paradox? Thus, I used the term fired. Not because they deserved it, but global business is changing the landscape.

But this is off-topic. The death toll in Ontario tripled. Three dead now. I’m sure full lock down is coming very soon.

Italy reported its highest number of single day fatalities today. 793 in one day. Really makes you wonder if certain genes react worse to the virus. Italy has twice the cases America has, but 14 times the deaths. Romania still has zero.

An African doctor pointed out about a week ago that theres no proof all the deaths aren't just Asian people living in those countries.

I find that sort of appeal to authority weird, feels like watching Ancient Aliens

There's like a million doctors in a country, some of them are going to be nuts, that's just statistics

https://www.bloomber...ness-italy-says

According to that article, the average age of those who have died of the virus in Italy is 79.5

The headline is that they had other conditions -- as one ages, conditions do tend to pile up. Italy does have a relatively old population compared with many other countries. How the elderly are distributed and how they interact with the rest of the population can also play a large role.

A quick google search brings up this fact: "67 percent of Italians aged between 18-34 live with their parents, the latest figures from statistics agency Eurostat show, a figure almost 20 points higher than the European average"

That means that elderly Italians are also more likely to be exposed to younger people carrying the virus than in other populations. Furthermore, the traditional Italian greeting that I joked about above can't help (no doubt they were still doing that as recently as a few weeks ago). There's probably other factors, too -- what if the Italian doctors are so overwhelmed right now that only the most severe cases are being tested? Again, that would skew the statistics.

It's quite possible that certain genes carried in certain populations make people more vulnerable, but there just isn't enough data right now to support any such speculation.

Just some comedic relief. Whole country here had its guard down due to, on one hand, being too conceited to look at the rest of the world per usual and on the other hand, to being encouraged to go vote in a nation-wide context of municipal elections by the government itself till it suddenly shut everything down and stepped the emergency plan levels up a few notches overnight as soon as the polling stations closed. Place went from flaunting its selfish traditions under the cover of its revolutionary heritage to full-on quarantine very abruptly, and that was just last week. Now you need to fill in paperwork whenever you need to live your house, for necessities only and if you don't carry it on you at all times it's a $150 fine - feels like proper war state out of nowhere.

90% of the industry I work in is going down, although I should be alright in the long run because I always focused on long-time networking over short-term business (but I did just lose a year worth of contracts). The Olympics are most likely getting canceled. The economy worldwide is in for a shit storm the average Joe isn't even ready to see coming yet; things on many levels are forcibly getting reevaluated real soon. You guys all stay safe and strong.
