This was my initial reaction as well and I'm still sympathetic to it. If we are still locked down a month from now, I'm pretty sure I will be back in that camp.

HOWEVER, when people talk about the small number of deaths so far, that's not very persuasive by itself. The low death toll in the US is partly due to this still being in its early stages, and partly due to the very same lockdown policies that are being objected to. Would it have been better to aggressively test for the virus earlier on and only isolate infected individuals + the vulnerable? Absolutely, yes. But right now we are still playing catch-up. The real test of government officials acting in good faith is, can we convert over to a less draconian policy that only isolates infected+vulnerable individuals once things are more under control? No, I'm not optimistic about that either. And that's why I say, if the situation is more under control, but they are still insisting on the universal lockdown, I will be with you. And yes, you can be sure that we will be demonized for advocating "dangerous" policies. But, at this moment, I'm not there. And who knows, maybe the government will surprise us and act reasonably.

With regards to the economy crashing and stuff. People think that the so-called business cycle of boom and bust is a natural occurrence that we can't do anything about. It's not really. Most of it comes from the choices we make. Flood the market with oil? Oil price drops, economies dependent on oil go bust. Stop buying anything and stay inside 99% of the time due to a virus? Not naturally occurring, this was a choice people made. It's not like this thing kills everything it touches, maybe people with weak immune systems or the really old people (80+) whose systems don't function as well as someone in their 30s.

I can't wait until it dies down and I can start watching the news again. Right now, if I turn it on and I see the subject is Coronavirus I switch to something else immediately. I've been doing this for at least 2 weeks now. I'm not in denial, I just won't participate in the obsession/scare/doom and gloom. I'm still going about business as normal up until somewhere I usually go to gets shut down. I don't care if others think I'm one of the reasons its hard to contain the virus because I won't wall myself up in my home.

It was sad to see all the empty or almost empty parking lots along the stretch of business district I traveled. The bright side is gas is down to $1.65/gal and there were no waiting lines at the stores longer than 2 people. Traffic was light.

Speaking for myself, I'm putting my pitchfork back in the shed for the next few weeks at least. There will be plenty of time to get the pitchforks back out if restrictions are not relaxed later on when it's reasonable to do so.

Even if governments did nothing right now, the economic disruption would be enormous. Most people simply wouldn't be willing to go about business as usual. So what you would get is, a minority of people going about business as usual and spreading the virus fairly quickly, while most people tried to isolate themselves. You would get, I think, a pretty bad combination, something approaching the worst of both worlds. At my own business, for example, there would not be enough customers to justify the expenses of keeping it open, while the backlash and risk of being open would be considerable. Getting the virus is a roll of the dice, even if you are young and healthy. There's a good chance you will be fine, but the chances of it being serious are high enough that most people don't want to risk it. That's all you need for serious economic disruption, even without the government playing a role.

120k people in the US have tested positive for COVID19. But test results are delayed by an average of a week, so that data should be considered a week old. Also, only a small minority of people with the virus are being tested -- the wealthy, officials in sensitive positions, people with severe symptoms, and a smattering of others without severe symptoms. It's hard to estimate, but let's say that 10% of those infected were tested. That would put us at 1.2M infected. But since that was a week ago (test reporting delay) the actual number currently infected in the U.S. is probably closer to 2M.
