[RELEASE] Cosmetic Duke version 1.6 is up!

#1

The aim of this mod is to enhance DN3D visuals, audio quality, add QoL changes and fix some bugs. Mods like Duke Plus or Nuclear Showdown, while great, interfere with mentioned balance in a significant way and HRP style packs (adding high resolution textures etc. to old games) never resonated with me - I always preferred the graphics quality closer to the original. This is the reason I made Cosmetic Duke.

Primary resources / inspirations:
HQ Sound Effects by Per Kristian Risvik
Duke Nukem 3D PSX Sound Effects by Marphy Black
Nuclear Showdown by Jblade35
Widescreen status bar by Fox
3D classic skyboxes by Fox
Duke Nukem 3D Megaton Edition
Duke Nukem 3D World Tour

Primary helpers:
Trooper Dan
Jblade35
Mblackwell

Got it working, it looks fantastic!

One question, I want to use it with the mods (Duke Caribbean etc) but I don't know where to unzip the files to or how to run it properly :(

Can someone help please?

All you need to do is to put the whole zip file into the Autoload folder. Start eDuke32, select "Enable autoload folder" and choose the grp from the list. Remember you can have only 1 CosmDuke zip file in the autoload folder at a time, otherwise the different versions may conflict with each other.

Nice. I particularly like the addition of sounds to the dragons in Life's a Beach.

Rather than use the autoload folder you can make a batch file with the relevant GRP file and cosmetic duke zip as arguments. For example something like this eduke32 -nosetup -gamegrp vacation.grp CosmDuke_Caribbean.zip

couldn't you also unzip it to a custom folder to load it alongside?

Yeah, you can do it like this too.

While I'm at it, is this Classic, Polymost, or Polymer?

It should work with any renderer but I didn't do any thorough testing.

Not the biggest fan of the smooth shotgun animation. Being the only weapon animated as such I feel like it stands out, and the frames don't feel like they align or are centered on the screen properly, so each time Duke pumps another shell the sprites feel like they jump around erratically. That's pretty much my biggest gripe though.

Suggestions:
Replace the end of level jingle with the one from Total Meltdown
Add voxels for use with classic and Polymost renderer
If possible, let some customisations be togglable using CVARs
Change the later Nuclear Winter levels to use the grey clouds skybox from episode 4

Thanks for the feedback!

I've noticed there are bugs in the Caribbean version of the mod which were introduced when changing a lot of the code within all of the versions. Sorry about that. Nothing game breaking though.

This is awesome, I only have on issue: if I try combining it with the voxel pack EDuke32 crashes on launch. :(

It wasn't made to work with voxels. Sorry. Even though I can start it without crashing, a lot of stuff does not work anyway.

How to get voxels in Cosmetic Duke

1. Download CosmDuke.zip and duke3d_voxels.zip
2. from duke3d_voxels.zip copy the folders maphacks and voxels, and the files duke3d_maphacks.def and duke3d_mapvoxels.def to CosmDuke.zip
3. open up duke3d.def in CosmDuke.zip and add the following

include duke3d_maphacks.def
duke3d_voxels.def

So out of curiosity, what is the full feature list for this mod? I see the general overview and bug fixes, but what does this specifically do?

Copied from the readme file (of last version cause I'm always slow to update...)

Spoiler

IMO the most noteworthy changes are
- Pistol can be manually reloaded (and has a separate counter telling you how many bullets are left in the clip)
- A lot of voice clips have been added from DNF and Manhattan Project, and the classic voice clips are replaced with those of World Tour
- You can headshot enemies with accompanying animation
- In Life's A Beach, the floating dragons now has their own sound effects

Thank you.

I'm glad that the staying gibs feature from NS has been brought over. That always was one of my favorite features. That being said, I wonder if the small screen shake effect when firing some of the weapons could also be carried over? Probably as a toggle because I get that there are people out there who hate it/are sickened by it; though personally I enjoy a small bit of screen-shake as it makes the weapons feel more impactful. Speaking of toggles, is the World Tour voice lines toggable to their originals? I'm all for high-quality samples, but I'm unfortunately in the camp of people that prefer the more aggressive-sounding Duke from the original (I mean, if not, I could probably just manually replace the voice files...).

While I'm at it, I may as well. Is there any way to recreate the "spawn (bloody + temporary) gibs on hit" feature from X-Treme?

Unfortunately you can't toggle voicelines (that was one of my suggestions earlier in the thread). I too prefer the classic voice clips but I can see that he changed them to be consistent with the new lines from DNF and Manhattan Project. Still I'd like a Classic Voice toggle even if it means a less chatty Duke.

Would it be possible to make one base release then do patches for the add-one like for Duke in DC? Instead of having one big archive for each add-on that duplicates a lot of content?

If you wanna go crazy... compatibility patch for Alien World Order?

I'm gonna be honest. I do not have the knowledge as to how implement a toggle option for anything really. However, since you two really want a Legacy Duke Talk patch of some sorts, here it is:

http://www.mediafire...gacyDT.zip/file

It's the old school Duke. The new DNF and Manhattan Project lines have been downsampled to match (more or less) the quality of the original lines.

I appreciate it. How should this be installed?

Just copy it into the Addons folder.

That's actually a pretty good idea. Will most likely do it for the next release.

the funny part is this will actually make the final boss not a joke anymore. I hope that if/when somebody finally makes some flamethrower code, the final boss is modified to somehow still shoot projectiles as opposed to uselessly flaming the air. Or get close. Or something. Anything.

Just downloaded and installed and I already love this thing.

Three notes, though:

1.) the download link for the voice patch doesn't work for me for some reason

2.) A question. Do the skyboxes simply not work in software mode? I understand why if this is the case, but I just wanna make sure I'm not being an idiot and missing a "turn skyboxes on" button.

3.) The new waterfall graphics have a tendency to move in the wrong direction.
