Nah I think they just added normals to them. Not very well?

well, it reads:
Original 1996 source code and "2.5D" engine re-mastered in True 3D for PC!
This may require an entire redo of existing TCs and mods to function with the new Duke. So, I'll wait for after the game sells at bargain prices to see what is what. :D
Unless proven wrong it looks like, the King is dead, long live the King. i.e. Duke 3D is toast and World Tour is the new king. :D

On the other hand though, Doom's modding/mapping community is really lively these days, and you need GZDoom or any good source port for most maps. The steam and gog version being vanilla Dosbox Doom doesn't seem to have hurt it too much.

I do hope at least vanilla Duke 3D maps like say Roch work on World Tour edition, just so more people can experience more maps on the workshop etc. But we've always got eduke.

Any word on if their new renderer/engine has TROR? If so, that would be one area where people might enjoy making maps for this version. Though their level editor probably won't be updated very often in comparison to mapster.

If all it got is a new weapon and dynamic lighting, then it's nothing that Eduke can't handle on its own.

I love eduke, it's the best, but Polymer has it's problems as we know, most prefer playing maps in Polymost or classic.

I'm definitely spending 20 on this. I do think $15 would've been a sweet spot, but I think people underestimate the new content a bit. A new episode of Duke to me is very very cool, and it goes up to ridiculously awesomely cool with the names they got for it.

I just watched that video with Randy.

"So apparently everyone is watching what I'm saying all the time on the internet..."

YOU'RE ON TWITTER. THAT'S WHAT IT'S FOR. GET OFF IF THAT'S NOT WHAT YOU WANT.

That stream was a living nightmare until Jon St. John arrived, I'm just trying to pretend it didn't happen. Like 'Nam...

Randy just never comes across like a genuine person. The worst part was when briefly touched upon the fact received and accepted credit for one of Levelord's maps in The Birth expansion (post-Hypnotic/Ritual exodus). That would be nice a mea culpa if he left it there. Like "I was a young jerk, and shouldn't have done that." Instead, he uses the opportunity to essentially say, "Levelord got his own back by getting credit for one of my maps in the soon-to-be-released episode 5, but I don't mind. I'm not the kind of guy who cares about that and it's simply a coincidence I decided to mention it to an audience of thousands so people know who to credit."

Yes, the Doom community still can get the original game version, their TCs/mods were/are based on; and develop further as they wish. Duke modders no longer have that luxury. Gone are Duke 3D, Atomic and Megaton.

Sure, there is EDuke32, and it is hard work to make a TC from scratch replacing all the assets. Unless, you are willing to buy the new World Tour. Enough of my own negativity, we'll see what is what soon enough, let's just hope it's a bit better as Randy's fucking singing.

Ah, I see what you mean. I was looking at it more from a custom content perspective, since it seems most Doom players are using source ports and playing limit removing maps. Even great classic style maps often won't work in Dos Doom. But it's true it's still an option for people. Maybe sometime they will offer classic Dosbox Duke on gog again at some point.

Gearbox did say that Megaton will be returning, I hope they stick to that statement.

When? Where? GOG said that Duke Nukem would be returning (in some form). I never heard anything about Megaton specifically.

Gearbox also said DNF would have a secret level. They can simply change their mind later on, assuming they were actually planning to put to back out in the first place.

I mean that post was more than 6 months ago. How hard can it be to put Megaton out there? It's not like they need to change anything much about it. Having said that it would be confusing having two versions of the game out there.

I wonder in what way it'll come back...I don't understand how that's possible when they're making a new Steam entry now. I think World Tour is what they were talking about ultimately and just trying to give fans hope.

I hope Shoverlware would bring DN3D:ME back because their new re-release just a totally new one and not really compatible with old maps/TCs/mods due those new sprites/textures/codes/stuffs which just stupid for me...

But even they do, I guess it'll still applied some changes into it.

And I won't get the World Tour unless it's on sale, even it already cheaper for my region(468NT$ -> 14.63 USD), it's good has original level/music designers and new/updated one-lines, but still not enough for me... well, I'm just not sure right now...

:D

I just watched the 7 mins Duke related PAXs stream and the World Tour trailer. The whole president thingy might be cool for your americans...for me it didn't work. Overall, I could have made a better trailer :D

Anyway, I'm extremely happy that Levelord and Blum made all the maps and that Duke's voice has been re-recorded. The music of the trailer sucks, so i hope the 8 new tracks by Lee will sound better.

20 bucks is ok for me. I might even pay 2x 20 bucks, because I want to play it on PS4 aswell. It depends, if multiplayer (coop and deathmatch) will be supported on that platform.

According to the Steam page both multiplayer modes are supported in the PC release.

Overall, I'm glad this is happening! Hopefully the new episode can be used somehow with eduke aswell...

Forgot something about modding: I highly doubt it will ship with a map editor or some kind of mod support. Gearbox hates community modding, they prefer selling DLCs.

Geez, you guys have spent more time eating Randy's word than looking at the new material showed.

I'm not going to watch 1h of Pitchford lies but this being said, I wouldn't mind a summary, or "best fuck ups".

Now let's take a look at the video and screenshots.

What's this with the "censored health kits" ? Why are they censored, was was wrong with them ? I don't get it, it's just a cross?

What's wrong with the vending machines?

Yeah, the normal maps look fucking terrible. The funny thing is that, it's like only that texture has it. It looks decent on the wall, but as soon as the texture is used somewhere else, like on the floor behind the counter, it doesn't really fit anymore.

The "incinirator" is still bleeding colours all over the place, even in firing stance.

Posted Image

One of the lizards looks like it's got some kind of red palette applied to him when he goes near a red light. This COULD explain why those red enemies in the Amsterdam screenshot, but I don't see any red light there, so it's probably just used for "enemies on fire" too.

Posted Image

And I'm guessing these are Moscow :

Posted Image

Posted Image

+ the one with the BLord surrounded by Redneck Rampage-like textures.
+ the one with the mini Overlords on Steam

I'm guessing this is Amsterdam. I'm disappointed by the lack of new sprites to represent weed. This is USERMAP material.

Egypt :

Posted Image

Aren't the pillars texture modified DN3D textures... ?
Anyway this here mixes dynamic lights and sector/wall shading in a way I do like.

Edit : oh yeah. I told you about the add-ons guys. I fucking told you.

Levellord is returning... and you guys are complaining?

Not overly thrilled by the trailer/music.

Why the love for Megaton? I want the expansion packs back, but Megaton itself can stay in it's tomb forevermore.

With the health packs - the Red Cross is complaining about violent video games using it's symbol. A lot of games/studios have complied and replaced the cross with something else. The BFG edition of Doom used a red pill instead of a cross.

from what I understood it wasn't a complaint so much as a plea to not use it in violent games...I don't think they were going to take any action but honestly in those circumstances it can't hurt to just do it for them. It'd be easy enough to mod back in anyway. The Pill is dumb though, should of just made new art of a green medikit instead or something.

Anyways I'll get this, price isn't great but it's cheaper than what I thought they'd charge for it.

I couldn't be more happy about the choice of level designers. It's just that I'm sorry they've had to work with some of the shitty art we're witnessing. The incinirator is still bleeding and half of the new art scream "usermap". Plus, I still would like a "non dynamic light" version. Hopefully it can be disabled, as well as the normal maps and any other modern post processing.

Speaking of that, did you guys check the recommended specs ? Looks like the performance is even worse than polymer?

Please don't. Wait for a humble dumble to get the game but give the money to charity.

I don't do humble bundles since the people still deserve to get paid for their work even if the leader of the company is a clown.

Man, this got me imagining the situation.
Pitchford must have had a constant hard-on when bossing A. Blum and Levelord around.

Anyone else feel like the re-recordings by JSJ heard in the video lack impact ? It sounds a little apathetic.

Also I just realized it says "Steam workshop" support on the Steam page. Fuck me. I'm going to have to buy it early if I want another 10k downloads on my shitty maps.

Anyone getting a "it's impossible !" vibe from this room ? Mini-Overlord bosses in the stock is a good idea though. I've always wanted to use it that way but never did because it recquired con changes.

Posted Image

What is this supposed to be? Some kind of laundry ? For the Russian boot camp perhaps ? God that new plant sprite looks horrible.

Posted Image

In the part of the video with the vending machines, we can see parts of the building on the left for a split second. What is this supposed to be? London?

Posted Image

Still no sign of Paris, I'm actually intrigued. Wonder if we'll get a Roch7 vibe.

New content is great news, but I more excited to check how they implemented multiplayer and workshop. I hope they spend more time on workshop implementation. We made few mistakes with workshop. First is not providing GUI for the distribution tool. The ideal way will be to integrate it directly to mapster. Second related to our decision avoid launcher. It caused problems with additional/replacing sprites loading, as reloading those resources during a game is a pain in the ass. So we stack with maps only and no way of proper modding in the workshop for Megaton.

Few things I don't like: price, lack of expansions and osx/linux versions.

Ah. I don't believe the game will come with mapster. Actually I wonder how they're going to include the level editor, they can't actually include Mapster or even JFBuild without paying royalties to their creators, can they.
In B4 DOSbox Build from '96.

Also forgot to mention....

Ah, maybe. But I think it's just the "giant walls surrounding the level" syndrome. Giant walls are also very obvious in the Moscow screenshots.

I'm willing to bet that the "Bazinga" line will show up in the Hollywood level when Duke comes across a movie set and maybe discovers the severed head of Sheldon Cooper or something.

Even though new maps are created by Levelord and Allen H Blum III, they probably will be not as good as latest maps created by duke4.net community mappers. But will see...

That doesn't necessarily mean that. I have a PC much higher than those specs, GTX 970 etc, and Polymer maps often lag for me and have a not great framerate. My guess is this new renderer will run much better than Polymer.

That said, my favorite way to play Duke will be Polymost on eduke forever I'm sure. But I like the look of this new renderer, and these new maps should be phenomenal for gameplay. I'm mostly excited for the new content, though it'll also be fun to replay Duke 3D with the all new voice lines etc. I love the sound of his re-recordings, though I'll still enjoy firing up the original version too.

That is very flattering of you for the community. I for one believe only a handful of usermaps have ever beaten the original game's maps. There are many aspects to level design which are neglected by most usermappers, including some very important ones like layout and flow. Instead, usermaps are more interested in creativity, coming up with new tricky effects and texture/sprite use. I mean, usermaps can be great, but they are something else, another category.

Now, do Levelord and Allen Blum still got it after 20 years... ?
