Duke 3d Enemy and Character Sprite Variants  "Sprite variants I drew for fun"

A fully armoured liz troop would be very useful yeah - as Dan said the variants are cool (and I plan to use them for whenever I pick up Nuclear Showdown again to replace the pal variants) but having a proper 'elite' version with armour and stuff that is quite different would be perfect. I actually spliced my Nuclear Showdown Spec Ops cops with your AA-12 helmet variant, I should post the artwork here at some point since I'm sure it would also be useful.

For the big boss version, I'm wondering if he could lay a big metallic egg instead, and a regular enforcer could hatch from it. Alternatively, he could lay an enforcer directly, similar to how the queen lays protector drones. I know this is kind of silly, but there is precedent for it and it would be a cool way to put adds into the boss fight. The main problem I can see is that enforcers are a hitscan enemy, which makes them super dangerous if a lot of them are around. At least protector drones can be dodged. Thoughts?

I think that's a bit too goofy, even for Duke - maybe just have the big boss lay the mines? Either that or have it crap out sentry drones (weak mini variants possibly)

those variant of Pig cop (with exposed torso, maybe with duke shotgun), and the lizard captain armored, it would be great to see them.

I'm thinking about the cyber enforcer that I'm going to code soon. The turd mines could be problematic. There is the potential for the mines being too easy to avoid and/or being a liability for the cyber enforcer because you might be able to kite him over the mines, or they might kill other enemies. Also the mine laying animation should last for a couple of seconds, during which he will be vulnerable.

For the miniboss version, I would probably want to limit the number of mines that an enforcer could lay to about 3, and have him do it only when the player is far away --but still in line of sight-- or is non-aggro for some reason.

For the big boss version, I'm wondering if he could lay a big metallic egg instead, and a regular enforcer could hatch from it. Alternatively, he could lay an enforcer directly, similar to how the queen lays protector drones. I see how mines can be problematic. One simple solution is the pooping animation isn't used. I like the idea of if maybe pooping an egg with a minion, but I'd rather it not be a mini cyber enforcer but something original like a 4 legged robot sentry. Picturing a smaller scaled cyber enforcer with a big cyber enforcer undermines the boss IMO. I'll try to think of something.

I understand what you're saying. And that's totally fine. I originally started making these sprites because I was inspired after playing Doom Project Brutality where the enemies have several variants and are slightly different from each other in looks and firepower. I thought it would be neat one day for someone to have a mod with a variety of enemies so they're not always shooting at the same enemy a hundred times. But after figuring out how to make sprites through 3d and liking the results, I started exploring more unique enemies to make like the pig cop boss.

I never imagined I would have made something like unique enemies and bosses, but I'm really glad I did. I got a few more unique enemies coming up, mostly inspired by Duke 3d and Forever concept art. If only I knew how to code and make mods would I try things like this, but I don't. I'm happy just drawing them up and give resources for someone to use in the future.

I take the middle road in this---using every single variant enemy would be a hassle and a half, but it's a great thing to have if you want to throw in a new enemy that isn't just a palette swap with a new firing effect (not that there's anything wrong with that....).

My dream project would be to put together a "bible" of Duke3D variant enemies, with flavor text and descriptions of how they attack (or how they would attack if they were implemented), all in one big PDF file (granted, this idea is partially inspired by the descriptions of enemies in the Bestiary over at Realm667, but still).

Great work with the crotch turret Overlord and the Elite Trooper.....it's amazing to see how concept art and unused versions of enemies can be realized in sprite form.

I think I'll use this as the Cyber Enforcer's "poop."

I'm also thinking about making a beefier pig cop enemy with riot/power armor. I might use a terran marine as a base model. What kind of weapon should it wield?

The pig cop would suit a riot gun from shadow warrior maybe or a new kind of a shotgun... :dukecigar: o yeah there could be 2 variables like one would attack with a weapon and the other would try to gut you open like in DNF!

Here's an EDF mech I was working on. Originally it had a yellow visor but I realized it looked too much like Halo. Currently, I'm not satisfied with the way it looks. Not sure if it's the color or if I need more detail to make it more Duke 3d styled. Thoughts? I envision it as either an ally that can help Duke or even an enemy if it's controlled by bad guys.

green is good . http://duke4ever.alt...2011/591max.jpg,
have you thought about playing the soldier? maybe with all Duke animations.

with EDF npc, modder can recreate a NPC that attacking alien in some game.

Okay, WOW. I'm assuming there are more sprites on the way for this?

Yes, at one point I was trying to extract the 3d model, but it wasn't rigged (didn't have a 3d skeleton to manipulate) from what I remember and I'm terrible at rigging. But I might find another way after I finish off the EDF mech, some other concepts and Bombshell.

Yes, but not too many. The standard walking and firing. There's a note on the art saying the rockets can fire so it has an alt fire where the shoulder rockets rotate down. There's inactive/shutdown sprite when it's not operational. I'm thinking of dimming the red visor for that. And for the death sprite, I just have a husk. Should I include anything else?

I think a stomp or melee attack would be useful as well. I actually tried to recreate those EDF soldiers with a really crappy sprite edit in the AMC TC, if you manage to find a way to rig them up that would be awesome as I could just drop them in right on top of what's there.

My only regret about those enemies is that I can only upvote your post once.

Having the sniper alien, in addition to looking amazing, has the potential to add some new gameplay. There could be areas where Duke actually has to use cover, and get into a sniper battle with them.

Yeah, I'm thinking a tazer kind of attack. BTW, I did a few more changes to the look and I'm now more satisfied with the EDF Mech.

Here is the female alien requested by jet nick. I used the firefly trooper as a base, but it's not intended to be a variant:

Updated pig cop swat car with requested additions (damaged/burned, wreck, flying license plate)

I'm guessing the female ninja from Shadow Warrior is where the "assets" of the female alien came from?

And like Trooper Dan, I regret that I can only upvote your brilliance once. I salute your excellent work, and I salute you! :dukecigar:

Thanks guys. Actually I didn't look at the Shadow Warrior female ninja when making the female alien, but I can see why they are very similar. Personally I think the female ninja is poorly modeled IMHO.

Faemale alien with sniper,
can it open new gaming opportunities,
we have already seen in zero Hour where Some enforcer used Sniper Rifle.

I still believe they just recycled the work made for the old Lara sprite as a hasty addition to not waste 3d work.

Though the demo version of lara croft looks better IMO.

Edit: Nevermind, I read that wrong. Yeah, the low polygon look is pretty obvious.

Wow, not since David G. (aka. ItsNatureToDie) on the Zdoom forums have I seen one person pump out so many high quality spritesets in such a short time.

The female sniper alien is my favourite so far. It's so good you almost can't tell what it's based on.

After discovering Doom mod Project Brutality, I loved how the game had variations of different enemies and made the game much more fun to play among its many features.

So for fun, I drew up my own variants of Duke Nukem 3d enemies. I hope one day there can be an awesome mod like Brutal Doom/Project Brutality for Duke 3d.

Incidentally, the works of David G. formed the base for Brutal Doom way back in 2009. So I'd say you are on the right track with your own spritesets :dukecigar:

Edit:

Your version of the boss hog looks much better than jet-nick's (no offense), please continue if you can still think of a way to improve on it!

Edit 2:

Also, wow, I just saw the minigun pig. I think I may have a new favourite.

I also had an idea that I need some comments on. I was thinking about making a scary slime monster than hangs out around those green slime areas with slimers, eggs, and babes. I thought it would be cool to have a walking slime monster (not necessarily biped) that can camouflage/morph into the pods that babes are usually in. Any ideas for shapes or forms? Off the top of my head, I imagine a fasting walking slime monster that looks like Hedorah that melee attacks.

mmm as a form you can take inspiration from the rigelatins
or this with the slime

https://cdna.artstat....jpg?1454273767

you can create something with tentacle and slime.

Kill the cocooned woman is completely optional in original game, seems more an act of cruelty than pity, and anyway leaving them or not in that state does not have any repercussion for the player. (I remember that one turned into a protector drone once but I'm not sure about it, probably was a very rare case of internal bug)

Maybe you can "rationalize" the transformation making the cocoon parasite exploit the body of those who have trapped as a base to transform themselves in that anthropomorphous slime creature, a bit like the xenomorphs.

It's not cruelty. They even say "kill me" when you try to interact with them. They're completely a lost cause and too far gone. The idea is certainly that you're doing them a favour out of pity. DNF tried to mirror this (I think effectively) but people got really mad for some reason. It's a pathos plot device to make you hate the aliens as much as Duke already does. That's why I'll never understand why people called that sequence "misogynistic." (barring the bad taste Duke line with the Holsom Twins at the end of it)

I don't remember any podded women turning into protector drones and I just played through the entire game last week.

The "Kill me" thing was an Alien reference. Of course, this was changed for Duke Nukem 64 where you HAD to rescue them---and before that, the FEMCON mod allowed you to rescue the babes, which led to similar mechanics in later mods like Nuclear Showdown and (most recently) The AMC TC. I could go on a whole spiel about how I prefer to save the babes, and such, but that's a story for another thread.

BOT: sebabdukeboss20, the Slime Monster looks brilliant. Will there be sprites to view it from more angles than just the frontal view?
