Cool news that the series is back in the hands of some of the original creators. I guess SS3 will be pretty far ways off since Underworld isn't supposed to ship until December 2016.

I bet we'll be seeing another Otherside Kickstarter campaign soon!

Can't wait for the full site to launch that just contains the final System Shock 3 title art, a copyright section, and an announcement of a planned kickstarter asking for something in the 6-7 figures

Yeah it feels like countdowns went from release dates to trailer releases to game announcements and now they've sunk to "we're planning this game and need your money to do"

I like the idea of a SS3 and I'd like to be wrong though.

What's the point of a countdown for a Kickstarter?

To build speculation and hype.

To specifically turn me off from buying the game.
A good number of projects have done this tactic

Just....stay quiet until the Kickstarter is ready. That's what Double-Fine did with Psychonauts 2. (though with Fig, not KS)

I think they got the original voice actor back to voice SHODAN.

Warren Spector is now a part of the project:

System Shock 3 development will be led by original producer Warren Spector

Oh, the guy who love walking simulators and the guy who did nothing good after Deus Ex? He also worked on Invisible War as far as I remember.

I also heard he said that Lolipop Chainsaw shouldn't exist (maybe it's garbage, but I can bet my money it's not the reason why he hate it so bad that it shouldn't exist in his opinion). Or how this guy hate violence in video games, it's poetry. Hopefully he's not one of these people who love to force their agenda in games.

And of course, let's don't forget that sometimes people who worked on good projects in past can't guarantee a good quality today, people tend to change a lot. I think I don't even have to provide examples.

However, I'm glad they have a lot of people who worked on original games, especially on the first one, so there is a hope for the game to be good. And the best thing is that they don't have Levine. I'd like to see Doug Church on board though (he directed the first game), he's with Valve for now.

And now you've lost my attention again. :dukeaffirmative:
Indeed I don't think there's any memorable game of his since 2000 (Deus Ex 1). Maybe he lost his touch, or maybe Deus Ex success was less because of him and more because of everyone else involved.

There are good news though, if you're fan of the first game. They finally found source code for the first game. I waited for so long, finally it's possible to fix a lot of issues, especially that one CPU bug. Not only that, they want System Shock Remake feedback from original fans, see this thread. If only we had the same people who owns Duke, I mean competent people who care about community. Hopefully they will make Remake good. I was very disappointed when they announced console release (developers who make their games for PC first and then port PC version to consoles are very very rare thing).

Yeah, Doug Church is one of the big names that they're severely lacking. Putting Warren Spector on that seat seems all kinds of iffy to me, and I fear for the project.

Yes, I have mixed feelings as well. I really hope they'll contact him and get him on board. He contributed way more than Warren Spector.

I don't know. It can be too easy to outright dismiss great designers who have had a few missteps. A guy like Harvey Smith released two terrible, albeit fucking subversive, games back-to-back before Dishonored restored him to "game auteur" status.

Spector's involvement in SS3 is definitely a wait and see proposition, but I would way rather see both Underworld and System Shock in hands of some of the developers who created the originals than teams who just name-drop LGS as influences. We've seen way too many times what happens when people have the name and the rights but not the soul.

Chris Siegel, former LGS staffer and producer on SS3 and Underworld, stood up for Spector over on SystemShock.org.

Quote

Selling Warren short is kind of silly. The guy has a string of hits and a track record better than most in the game industry going back almost 30 years. Saying he wasn't involved as much as Doug in SS is crazy talk. It just doesn't work that way in a LGS type company. The producer, designer, eng exc all have massive input. Trust me, been working with these guys for years, a person's title doesn't really matter in this environment.

I do love this storyline about how old game designers lose their mojo. Seems to me the ones still doing interesting stuff is not old or young, but smart and talented. Ken Rolston did Oblivion in his 50's for example. Did he lose a step? No, that is arguably his best work ever. The beauty about having a very veteran core is gasp--we have all done it before. So many mistakes learned over years. The what if's and what could have beens are still fresh in our heads. We do remember feature 332 that we didn't get to do in Thief. Or the missteps made in the Shock games. Those are not armchair experiences for us, that is personal history. That is just as much a memory for us as our kids being born or our wedding. I haven't talked to Warren about Shock yet, but I bet he has a laundry list of stuff he disliked about any number of his games, and ideas on how to address them.

As for Epic Mickey--it's flawed, but if there is a console game out there that has the DNA of Looking Glass--it's that game. All the tenets of player agency and whatnot are in there. Why did he do that project? My guess is he loves cartoons--his first game was Toon after all. Love it or hate it, if Disney walks up with a big check, let you do the game your way, hell they redesigned Mickey for it, you take the chance. It's not like it was a failure, it just wasn't 'hardcore'.

Polygon Feature: Here's what Warren Spector's doing about System Shock 3 - Maker of 1994 original is getting to work on newest iteration

Quote

Spector: "I'm certainly going to put the word out and see if I can find people who worked on the original games because there aren't a lot of people in the game business who understand the idea of player empowerment in the way that's important to me. There aren't a lot of people who understand the concept of shared authorship. I need to reach out to people who understand those things. I don't want to spend the next year teaching people those things."

Actually I'm surprised that he came after what I said about Specter.

But yeah, someone already mentioned this part on SystemShock.org.

Well that certainly looks really rad. Some awesome lighting and ambience going on.
The only thing disappointing me is the animations of the zombie; it looks a bit asset store-ish.
Also hope the sound effects aren't final; that background soundtrack was top notch stuff, but the sound made when he smashes the camera with the hammer? Probably placeholder however, not to worry.

I hope it's not tense string notes through the whole thing. I want to hear something like this again:

This one has a few variations within the same track. Not bad. Although, I wonder how it'd sound in prog...

The soundtrack of System Shock is fully dynamic, excluding the elevator music and some of the cues (like dying).
