I first saw that on facebook, where I gather the idea is that people are scrolling their news feed and the video automatically starts playing, so they have to show something exciting enough within a few seconds to make the user stop scrolling and watch the rest. Of course, pretty soon after that they started showing up on youtube and in standard trailers where they're not necessary.
