LOL! THAT was funny! (and quite true)

First time in this thread... Robman is like the new, but less inventive, BlackHarted. No matter the thread, he can't change subjects for more than about two posts. Even if there is a life threatening conspiracy, which there probably is, I didn't come here to read about that... Geeze.

MrBlackCat

It's been like a year since I lightly mocked you in 1 post, let it go.
There is a life threatening conspiracy, if we continue to ignore it you won't be going anywhere to read anything.

Here's a list of Windows versions that were mistakes:

Win98 first edition.
Windows ME
Windows Vista
Windows 8/.1

This should be common knowledge and I still see absolutely no good reason to upgrade from Win 7.

I'm not trying to get at you or be contrary, but that is just wrong. The core of Windows 8 was rewritten to be much faster and less memory hungry.

I've been using Windows since 3.11 and I am aware of different versions and how they respond and how they are used. Windows Vista, apart from other problems, was a memory whore. If you had a machine with 2GB of RAM, it would fly under XP, it would respond adequately under 7 and even better under 8. It would be barely useable under Vista.

There is a pressure, especially amongst techs, to dis the new version of Windows. Vista has earned its foul reputation though.

/thread

The only reason people hate Windows 8 is "hurr durr Metro hurr durr". If M$ didn't remove their beloved and shiny Start Menu they'd be in love with 8.

The Metro interface, especially in Windows 10, is GREAT if you aren't using a desktop. Even if you are, it's not too bad. But it requires "tinkering" and "customization" to reorder the tiles and trim the fat, and people are too lazy to do that, when it's as easy as using the search function, right-click on the shortcut and click "pin to Start" to get your favorite apps on the Start Screen. And the best part, you avoid all the clutter from the Start Menu in earlier iterations of Windows (especially considering Windows had a tendency to leave behind empty folders from uninstalled apps).

Also, I'm pretty sure having a Start Screen with all the tiles you want makes Windows start faster than having a desktop full of icons.

I love the Windows 8.1 metro interface. Yeah, I must be crazy. There aren't that many programs that I use habitually. After a few minutes, I had an interface that I found very pleasant, even quicker to navigate than the start menu. I think people hate it because they don't remove all the extra stuff on it, though I also believe pressure is the main culprit again.

Mine looks like this. I never need anything else. What's the problem?

That could all be resized to take up only half your screen.

That's the equivalent of not trimming your pubes Mark :D
Are you using a solid background to save on memory use?

That tile crap in win 8 was for touch devices guys. It's meant for fat fingers and smartphones. Looks like bloated icons and bland backgrounds, I don't equivocate that to "progress" especially considering that it just lines Bill's pockets.

Want a computer that starts fast? Get an SSD and recent hardware.

I find a solid black background to be very inspiring when writing a musical piece. Posted Image

Anyway, how to get custom tiles on Windows 10? That Pin More tool is paid and only works with games.

Robman. Its all shortcuts. I used to keep a cleaner desktop until I found from testing that bootup times with or without lots of shortcuts was almost the same. Its when you drag the actual executable files out there it starts hogging the resources and taking longer to boot and to shut down.

Why did I never thought of that? :D
Guess I didn't knew it was customizable nor did I care (I hate metro for non-mobile devices), but when I upgraded my notebook Windows 8 partition to Windows 10 it was intuitive for some reason to modify my start menu with only the most used programs as tiles. I still like the new menu miles better though since it doesn't block the entire desktop like in Windows 8.

I guess the "10" in Windows 10 refers to how many minutes it takes to break the system.

Had some customized shortcuts to a few games that don't require an install. Hit the start button, right-clicked on "programs" and chose "open". Pasted in the shortcuts. The OS promptly went to shit - every shortcut under programs in the start menu disappeared, all the shortcuts in the taskbar disappeared, i think it's called "metro", but every thing that uses its interface stopped working (e.g. - adding a new user, action center, etc), the firefox profile disappeared along with all the bookmarks and add-ons leaving it like it was just freshly installed, windows explorer would open - but all it showed was a bunch of empty unnamed folders. Had to do a system restore to get most of it back - some things still aren't working right (the default games like solitaire won't launch).

Went and opened C:\Users\Forge\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\ Start Menu through windows explorer and seen that it was supposed to be inaccessible, but it let me open it by right clicking on the start menu. Fucking stupid.

Not like M$ didn't blow anything before either. Windows ME was a disaster, so was 2000. XP was a risk since they had to get it right, and luckily they did.

Windows 2000 wasn't a disaster. It was the best OS they ever produced, although Windows 95 was the most important. Installing it on a Chevy Cavalier would make it drive as fast as a Ferrari F40, with all the reliability of a Honda Civic.

That OS was unkillable, stupid fast, phenomenally powerful, and steamlined to hell and back. Until XP hit Service Pack 3 it was a fucking shitshow by comparison - and XP always had far steeper requirements. 2000 ran great on everything - even a Pentium 166 was usable if you gave it enough RAM and a $10 ATI Rage Pro.

XP also had more security holes - a great example was the Sasser worm. On a network full of XP and 2000 machines, Sasser would self replicate via the XP machines, and then shut down, but the Win2K machines would only shut down. The first half of the payload didn't work at all on them.

I will miss Windows 2000 until the day I die. It was the only OS that I could ever call "perfect." If it had System Restore, MSConfig, shutdown.exe, and Paint's ability to open more than just .BMP files, it wouldn't have a single fucking flaw. Save for the lack of System Restore, those others can be fixed with minimal effort.

Win95 OS2 was the best of 95 but was also the latest.

XP was win2000 but with a fancier interface. Win2000 was just fine and stable! I used it for quite awhile.

Half the people here grew up with windows xp because they are young as f*ck. Face it, age is beauty in the digital.

I also grew up with dos/win 3.xx because I'm old and have experience points. Suck it down.

BlackCat doesn't like how I converse with people here, but he can lick my choda. My views are valid because I've lived.

If you like win8 or 10, you're win7 lovers incognito but with added bs and more nsa, face it.

Keeping up with the times is lame especially when the times want your soul.. *cough.. data/money.

Except it wouldn't run DOS programs.

Which isn't so bad now, but back then, there was no such thing as DOSBox.

OSR 2.1 was the first Microsoft OS to have the NSAKEY exploit.

It's the best version of 95 though, there's a reason my Pentium 1 runs it.

Who cares? My Athlon XP was too fast for them anyway.

Win 98 lite was the pinnacle of Ye Olde Windows. I loved 2000, but the lack of game support was a deal breaker.

No. I run my computers at 320 x 240 to conserve memory. Remember, I'm running Vista. :D

Of course its shrunk. I always try to keep the file sizes small on the forums. Plus it hides the names of all those upcoming Eduke32 projects that you see the icons for.

Robman said: Are you using a solid background to save on memory use?

No. The icons may change, but this is how my computer desktops have looked since Win95. Same color, same lack of theme. At first with Win95 I toyed around with different pics for a backround. But after a few months I stopped that and haven't gone back. Now that I think about it, one time that I did put a pic back on was when someone here posted a hires wallpaper pic of all the DNF monsters together. It was so cool looking it stayed on the desktop for a week or so.

Now that i've killed cortana and as many as the data collecting microsoft spyware processes I can get my hands on, took over the OS from TrustedInstaller and System, and installed my own security measures I feel about as confident in Windows 10 as I did with Windows 7. (take that how you want to).

At least they left in the feature to make a new folder on the desktop and name it GodMode.{ED7BA470-8E54-465E-825C-99712043E01C}
-or whatever the fuk if you don't like GodMode name it SatanMode.{ED7BA470-8E54-465E-825C-99712043E01C} or Poinies4Ever.{ED7BA470-8E54-465E-825C-99712043E01C}

Yeah, at this rate, it looks like I'm going to be waiting for all the annoying quirks and bugs to be squashed before I get the free release.

It's cute, but I'm not interested in anything that collects my program history, web browsing history, e-mail. and any other data it can mine and send off to some cloud that microsoft can squeeze the info-rain out of any time they want. Double that disaster if you log in to your comp with a Live ID instead of a local account.
Not that I'm doing anything other than playing a couple games and perusing game forums, but that's still none of their damn business.

Tried installing Windows 10.
Got the black screen of death when it was done installing.
Reverted back to Windows 7.

Well, that was a fun little experiment.

You're not missing out on that much. Windows 7 is a lot less anal about being tweaked.

If you're that interested you can get a windows 10 iso file, burn a disk, and install it. Look around, then restore back to 7 when you get tired of hunting down the microsoft spy-ware that's installed by default.
