The Serious Sam Thread  "In anticipation for SS4"

#31

Serious Sam 1's source code just got released, to celebrate Serious Sam's 15th anniversary.

Yes!

We need more big names in gamedev to lead the way with open source since Zenimax appears to have ended John Carmack's tradition, if the Keen sources are any indication.

More people should bug Night Dive about the Turok and System Shock games. I'll handle 3D Realms if any more source code opportunities arise.

Interesting, funny that I was about to send an email inquiring about their old unused fixed-function 3-pass bumpmapping technique and smooth fog volumes last week and had procrastinated on it. Now I don't have to! :whistling:

Strangely I thought there was a Linux version already.

Skimming around the source it looks like they had already stripped the aforementioned fake bumpmapping in this one. I now recall it was gone by Second Encounter (the bumpmap room in the Technology Test is a detailmap room instead). The only remnants left are in model code for bump vectors

Ryan C. Gordon has been going through his old Linux ports, getting huge diffs in the way (no revision control was really done back then).

While I think it is planned to merge his work into Croteam's repository on GitHub, for now you can find his doing here: https://github.com/r.../Serious-Engine

Some messages on the topic are currently scattered in his twitter account: https://twitter.com/icculus/

Croteam teased something 'serious' for E3
Likely Sam 4. Please be a fun setting!

The only official art we have implies Paris will make an appearance.

But, in a shocking twist, we'll soon discover that Mental has actually been teleporting Earth's most famous landmarks to Egypt. Psyche! You just got Mental'd!

France/Paris and Italy/Vatican are the currently confirmed locations, including a third one that's kept secret.

Why does Sam look completely different in every game?

He's always looked relatively the same; the only cause of difference is art style, the overly cartoony Sam 2 will obviously look different than Sam 3 which had a more gritty look to it.
Plus, lets not pretend we don't all play as Groovy Gary

Classic Serious Sam TFW and TSE box covers do look quite different. But I believe SS3 and SS4 look quite similar. Sam's just a little more disheveled with longer loose hair and without his sunglssses.

Yeah, he went from being Duke Nukem to Tim Allen. :)

Actually, I think he looked more like Jim Carrey on the TFE cover.

That's promotional art for Serious Sam 3, included in the extra content art book. Couldn't find it in the art book of the bonus content, but I did find the same design for Sam with long hair and all.
It's also pretty old, from at least 2012. And the wikia site also says that it's concept art. In any case I doubt the game will look anything like this.

I'd like to see some sources. As far as I know, nothing is confirmed, and the above image, as already mentioned, is promo art for Serious Sam 3:BFE.

The art released when Serious Sam 4 was announced in mid-2013. Whether it's concept or promotional art, Croteam released it as a visual aid for Serious Sam 4. It's the only promotional content that's been released by them.

Whats the timeline for the main Sam games so far?

SS3BFE -> First Encounter -> Second Encounter -> Serious Sam 2 -> Serious Sam 4?

If so, could Sam4 take place in a post apoc present day after returning from Sam 2 (or if Sam 2 is ignored, Second Encounter)

I heard SS4 was going to be another prequel before BFE.

It's:

SS4 -> BFE-> First Encounter -> Second Encounter -> SS2

But anything else than Egypt or similar ancient civilations* is welcome here

*) Drunk, so look up the correct spelling on google

Yeah, SS4 is a prequel to BFE. Also, SS2 is not canon anymore, it will be replaced by a remake that will be made after Talos 2 is done.

Talos 2 is confirmed??

:) :D :D

It would be hilarious if SS4 was indeeed canceled and they moved on to SS5, keeping in line with the Leisure Suit Larry series gag (there was never an LSL4).

It seems their plan now is to alternate between Sam and Talos. I hear rumors about a new project, but it's just hearsay at best.

Here are some more serious stuff to add to your hype list:

That space station level looks cool! Also, I like much of the soundtrack there for SSBD.
