Please dont just throw in jokes to the art guys, a lot of this art is used with a straight face in Duke, and other user maps. Frankly I think the gibberish you have there looks just fine.

Don't worry I don't like jokes in my artwork..
This is more suitable ... more Dos like code. now it wont look like it was based from fallout3, since people notice.

I agree with Commando Nukem ...
Episodes 1-3 were more serious the only jokes were what Duke said himself with the one liners... that's what made it so good, since you were in such a rundown hostile environment and Duke still managed to see the fun in it.

Episode 4 however is different, its more of a joke.. I never really liked it, the levels are stupid. I don't really consider episode 4 an official episode of Duke

I agree. For example, I cringe a bit whenever I see a BSOD, that's one of the most tired tropes out there.

If there is going to be anything, it should be subtle. Most of the easter-eggs found are small _one-time_ things that are only found by looking closely. ie 867-5309, THX-1138 baby ruth bar etc. The more blatant ones are only found in well hidden secrets.

On the security screen, how about a prompt to the effect of "cameras ready, tap screen to continue"?

Hey, don't go and insult Duke Burger, its a great map. Besides there's some good maps in the 4th episode.

Are there any surveillance camera scenes in classic action movies? Those would be a good place to look at some of the loading/idle screens for this tile since that is where 3DR would have gotten inspiration.

Or you could throw in something about peeping toms or big brother.

What about the "feed me a dead cat" thing on the ATM machines and things like that? That counts as humor in the first three episodes. Not to mentioned the doomed space marine and the luke skywalker cameo and other things like that.

That's another stupid HRP joke. Ever played without the HRP?

As others said, that's a HRP thing. What bothers me is when a commonly used tile has the same "joke" repeated over every time you see the tile

As I said earlier, those are well hidden secrets that you probably wouldn't know about on your first playthough.

American Psycho has no place in Duke Nukem 3D.
As far as i'm concerned if the original 8 bit tiles didn't have jokes to begin with or had text that was unreadable, then let's not lame it up with shitty jokes.
we never laughed at them in classic Duke.

Hey, I liked the humor on some of the tiles. Like the stuff in the Duke Burger map.

I've got to say that IMHO Duke is full of one-liners and Hollywood in-jokes. It NEVER took itself too seriously.

Strange that you have them. Those black stripes are the result of "rebuild normals" in md3compiler. I don't have them, those spots are just acting weirdly with specular for me. Anyway this is the case when we need a good md3 exporter, or ASE2MD3 converter.

Yep, but that's not the issue. The problem is when a joke that wasn't there before is made part of a tile. Maybe you have some funny T-shirts, but I'll bet you wouldn't like it if your kids got into your wardrobe and scribbled lame jokes on every piece of clothing you own. Over the years, hundreds of mappers have spent many thousands of hours creating levels for this game, with the knowledge of which tiles are serious, which are funny, and generally using the game's resources to create the mood they want. A lot of effort has been put into making some very serious and impressive levels. If the mood is spoiled by the HRP, it gives people a reason not to use it (and believe me, I know plenty of elite mappers who do not use it, partly for that reason). Duke 3D has the greatest collection of levels made for any game in history, and the HRP should respect and honor that legacy.

I don't recall any of your models ever having jokes added to them, by the way, so this isn't directed towards you.

Fire has been remade a few times already. Yet, here is my attempt. Looks slightly better than in the vid and obiously looks much better with higher frame rate.
Let me know what you think, because I don't want to make another sets if this is bad.

It looks a little better than the current HRP fire, but it still has an annoying jump in the animation with every cycle.

These are both very good points. If one was to make a tile such as the milk shelf (Shop-n-Bag level), there's nothing to suggest the tile is supposed to be funny so you'd have to think up all kinds of detail to it while avoiding making references to real world brands and whatnot, which I think you'll find hard as you can't put in real product labels and stuff either. This, in my mind, means we can't be too judgemental of a little intertextual humor if it goes well with the original look. Anyway, it's better that most of the stuff that can do without jokes in it stays generic. Overall, there's not much in the first 3 eps at least that should be bugging anyone right now.

It looks more like Duke Nukem fire, but its missing a frame in there, which is why you are getting the 'glitch'. Either that or its got two of the same frame when it cycles.

I rendered it in Blender. I don't think there is a way to make particles loop?
