EDuke32 2.0 and Polymer!  "talk about the wonders of EDuke32 and the new renderer"

I checked out the 64bit build and I have to say it kicks ass. While having a pretty good rig, I was always suffering from micro lags when switching weapons, blowing up stuff etc (at least when doing it for the first time, i.e. when textures got loaded into memory). Also level loading took pretty long. These problems belong to the past now. :P

What I have noticed, but I dunno if it's just me or not (r4103): "Esc" key doesn't work any more in the beginning to skip the intro movie/screens - it used to do that before. Also, my existing key bindings didn't fully work any more. I am using keypad numkeys, and it seems with the new build these have different names so you have to remap several of them.

Other than that, if you use Polymer AND HRP, 64bit is definitely making a difference (I didn't see considerable improvements before since I wasn't loading HRP at the same time). Nothing less than a milestone, as far as I am concerned!

Yeah, a milestone definitely!
I'll only use 64 bit from now on!
Btw, I don't experience any issue with the build from LeoD, which is r4096 ... on my windows machine.

Duke: "I'm not on optimization! Bruteforce bandwidth baby!" :P

Teaching the game to run the hard way.... haha! xD

At least SDL2 finally gets some keys right now on non-QWERTY keyboards it seems. Check DNKROY -> DNKROZ :P

Actually there is another issue I found on the 64 bit version...
...and this is realy weird.

Why is the picture of the guy when starting up the engine looks so ... well desperate Max Payne 3 like? :P
This realy has to be changed!!!!
(I hope you guys have some humor left) :P

By the way guys, the eduke64.exe name is temporary. The way it's looking now, 64-bit builds will be split into a separate download that keeps the "eduke32.exe" name.

This is due to the change from DirectDraw and DirectInput to SDL2 on Windows. I'll look into the "Esc" thing but I can't promise anything on the numpad keys.

Where can I find this new 64-bit version of eDuke that speeds up polymer by 80% (!)? I want it, I need it! *salivates* :P :P :P

Is anyone else getting these issues with the SDL2 builds?

  • The Pause key does not work
  • The startup window freezes if you get a CON error
  • Pressing keystrokes in Mapster like Alt+P causes the system to "ding"

Thanks for the link. TBH, it doesn't feel significantly faster than other recent builds I've used. But then again, I was using DukePlus, and with both the HDP & polymer enabled, all that gibbing can bring even the most powerful systems to a momentary crawl, I imagine. On "vanilla" Duke it seems a bit faster.

I'm getting the ding thing, but worse than that RAlt doesn't work anymore and neither does combinations like '+S, '+H, '+T...

Actually, I am fine with the change for the numpad keys. For the first time, they have their proper names in the settings menu. It's just that if you used a previous build which didn't have it, EDuke32 wouldn't recognize the keys, requiring you to configure it again even though it's still the same key. It is just a one-time effort though, nothing I cannot live with. I won't go back to any previous builds, anyway. :P

Yup.

Not here, seems to be Windows-specific.

It looks as if the SDL2 build recognizes the keys dependent on the OS keyboard layout setting. Thus, if you have e.g. German selected, you'll get a 'z' when pressing the key left of 'x', but the positions of the special keys will be messed up (and non-functional for the editor; e.g. in the German layout, a single quote is Shift+[what is '\' on a US keyboard]). Personally, I prefer the old way where it's pretended as if the keyboard were US regardless of the selected layout.

The switch to SDL2 was in r4100.

I changed the image to make it obvious that you're not running an 'official' synthesis build.

Something very minor and purely cosmetic, but anyway...

Icon doesn't show up properly in the taskbar with r4103 x64, at least for me (Win7 SP1 x64).

Do you have SDL/SDL.h in your compiler setup?

Yeah, it used to be Ä as ', but the '/* key doesn't work either and I've tried every possible combination I could think of. And I'd guess Ralt would be the same anyway? Can you even change the mapster keys, or do I have to change keyboard layout every time I want to run mapster?

Try updating your version of EDuke32. The "frozen ANM in Polymer" bug was fixed recently.

No ... OK, I think I've understood. To revert to the previous style I'd need to set RENDERTYPE=WIN instead of SDL_TARGET=1. I overlooked the second change in makefile.shared. :P

Semi-confirmed (same OS): Icon in taskbar is correct, but when ALT-tabbing through the processes I get a wrong one.

Oh, the issue with the quote key was on top of the layout dependence. Should be fixed in r4108, as well as the pause key.

No, the majority of Mapster32 keys are hardcoded, and the mental model behind the code simply assumes a US layout. So, international ones don't merely have keys in other positions, in general they don't make any sense at all -- as the example with the quote character: it's one key in US, but Shift+somekey in the German layout. This totally throws off its intended usage as a modifier key.

Btw, RAlt works fine here. Windows-specific, too?

The ' thing was fixed in the latest build. However the Ralt issue still exists. Ralt works in 20130709-3942 which is the other most recent release I got saved, haven't checked any other builds between to see where it broke. It's the same in the 64-bit build as well.

Edit: I tried it on another computer and it's the same, Ralt does nothing. Changing the keyboard layout didn't help either.

Lshift and Rshift doesn't work in 3D mode of mapster to move textures.
In 2D mode it works correctly.
Tested with mapster32 and 64 r4108 on german keyboard and windows build.

Also I've noticed that keyboard layout seems to change between 2D and 3D mode.
In 2D mode I have to press Y for saying yes.
In 3D mode it's still Z (Z and Y are flipped on english/german keyboard).

Strangely, whenever I play Nuclear Winter of Caribbean with Polymer, it seems to go okay (a bit laggy) but whenever I run it with the original game or Duke DC, it goes unbearably slow. I'm using LeoD's 64-bit build, is there something wrong?

If you use the HRP then this is mostly because of the Polymer lights which have been added in the maphacks for Atomic and DC maps (and more polymerized textures being used).

What's the console command to save the current state of the map in eduke32 as a new map? I've got some massive kind of bug going on which happens about halfway through progression, and I need to examine it in mapster post-glitch to try to isolate the problem.
