3D Realms Shutting Down

Kaiser, there is no doubt that 3DR has gone under. What is not certain though is the fate of DNF and i think thats why George remains silent. I think he is busy looking for best solution as to what to do with DNF and when he makes a decision about that he will speak up. At least thats what i think.

Are you trying to say that Joe Siegler is that much of an asshole that he'd set up a real paypal account as part of the hoax, so people could donate to his personal funds that were in pretend need of a boost and the donors would waste their own hard-earned money when he really had secure job all along??

Or that these talented artists would post their work and give contact info for potential employers.....so you're trying to tell me that every other game company is in on the "hoax", too, in case one of them actually wanted to hire one of former 3DR employees???

Guys, there's a simple explanation for this: Shit happens. And it happened here. And by "shit" I mean DNF simply not "making it."

remember the donation for Joe is false is for only the website

Bollocks.

How can you all (most) be so pessimistic when you know it only needs a few months (if that) to finish/release patches etc. Yeah the guys at 3DR are now jobless but the game is 90%+ complete. Another company could/probably will finish it off (eg Prey).

Look at how down the list of priorities Prey was compared to DNF. It was released and made a tidy profit. It doesn't make sense that George will not ask another company to finish it if need be. He simply won't can it all again.

DNF will be out ASAP probably 12/11/09 (the correct way round for that date BTW).

And Redcard, no offense but you are new around here. I don't know you and I simply cannot take what you say is true and believe it. The "I have a friend in the industry who says" or "3drealms didn't get a loan from Take2 for 5 million" is simply hearsay. NONE of this has been officially confirmed.

Here's even a better statement for George:

"It is with much sadness and regret that I am officially cancelling Duke Nukem Forever and closing 3drealms. All employees have been let go and are
now free to seek employment elsewhere. We were not able to meet our financing needs in order to get the game completed and after having tried to
secure more funding to no avail, I was forced to close the company and let all our employees go. I personally want to thank all the fans who stuck
with us over the years. I am sorry we could not finish the game.

-George Broussard

See, that's pretty easy to do. ;)

Yes, I am new here.

I had an account at 3D Realms a long while ago, but I don't even own that email address anymore, so I had to make a new one. (It was a hotmail address that got hacked when the wife accessed it at a public library :D )

I beta tested Duke3d for awhile.. unpaid, of course :D I have my original box releases of the games back then ;) And I have the Christmas card where they said it'd be out at the end of the year awhile back.

I've been around. Originally, when I got into software engineering, I was going to go into games. But it's a tireless, thankless industry, relatively lower paid, too, because everyone wants to get in on it.

So doubt my credentials all you want. The facts will show themselves shortly on LinkedIn, when you see big names get hired and start working in other areas.

Yeah, until he says something, there's a slight bit of hope the game came be salvaged.

I'm off to bed.

No statement yet because:

1) He's still making attempts at resolving the situation. He probably wants to wait until there really is nothing left before speaking.

or

2) He's been busy calling/emailing around to do whatever he can to help his people find work. How many here have actually had to let people go? It's a horrible experience that makes you feel terrible. I can only imagine what letting everyone go does to you - especially in the public eye like this.

or

3) He's accepted defeat on DNF and is in negotiations for whatever deal on another Duke game (that may even have already been in progress at Radar Group anyway - who knows?)

or a combination of these and others I haven't mentioned.

I actually don't expect any kind of announcement at all.

Nice to have you here. Well since I'm going the conspiracy theory route, I might as well ride it until the very bitter end. ;)

Hmm possibly, I just see him trying to hold back and carefully orchestrate his next words as I'm sure he's gonna take alot of flak for whats happend, hoax or not. Either way it seems like he is not going to easily get out of this. I wouldn't be suprised if he is found in his office clinging onto a duke figurine laying in a pool of his own vomit after heavy drinking.

Don't say that, that's a terrible image to bestow upon people.

I was just cooking (heating up) dinner and a couple of songs came into my head by the Bluetones (underrated/forgotten Britpop band from the 90s) that are surprisingly fitting to this situation (good songs too ;)).

Here are the lyrics and youtube links:-

http://www.youtube.c...h?v=ZUpoFBm_QSw

Slight Return:-

Where did you go
when things went wrong for you,
when the knives came out for you?
Where did you go?
All you needed was a friend.
You just have to ask and then.......

You don't have to have the solution,
You've got to understand the problem,
and don't go hoping for a miracle.
All this will fade away
So i'm coming home.

What did you learn?
Locked away all on your own,
chance and your head all blown.
What did you learn?
It was unfortunate,
you missed your chance to find out that.

Tonight I'm wound tighter than a watchspring
Tonight you owe my patience quite a debt
Tonight we're not gonna solve anything
I might say something that we both regret

And now the pressures on, the heat is rising
The time has come to stop apologising
'cos when the skies are clear
The threat of rain is always here with you

Tonight the geese are flying
And everything you say is a call to arms
Tonight there's something in the air
Don't come too close and you'll come to no harm

(chorus)

And now the pressure's on the heat is rising
The time has come to stop apologising
With all thats gone before
My motive's never felt so pure
And now my heart's beset
With 28 carot gold regrets
And when the skies go clear
The threat of rain is always here with you

What do you think guys?

I'm thinking more about "Metallica - The Day That Never Comes":
http://www.youtube.c...h?v=yErdJpg1ECg

Born to push you around
You better just stay down
You put away
He hits the flesh
You hit the ground
Maps so fulls of lies
Tend to black your eyes
Just keep them close
Keep praying
Just keep waiting

Waiting for the one
The day that never comes
When you stand up
And feel the warmth
But the sunshine never comes
No the sunshine never comes

Push you cross that line
Just stay down this time
Hiding yourself
Crawling yourself
You'll have your time
God I'll make them pay
Take it back one day
I'll end this day
I'll spread the color
On this grave

Waiting for the one
The day that never comes
When you stand up
And feel the warmth
But the sunshine never comes
No the sunshine never comes

Love is a four letter word
And never spoken here
Love is a four letter word
Here in the prison
I suffer this no longer
I put it into
This I swear
This I swear
The sun will shine
This I swear
This I swear
This I swear

Sissy and sad songs don't fit Duke. It has to be METAL.

There is a precedent. In 1995, a British software house (Novagen) was supposed to release a sci-fi sandbox game for PC called Damocles, and gave the publishing rights to Psygnosis. Novagen hyped the hell out of Damocles, with screenshots and interviews: while the game had a plot and a main mission (destroy a comet before it collided with a planet) it was supposed to allow the player to roam a whole solar system, land on planets, walk around cities on those planets, enter buildings, steal stuff, sell it, demolish buildings, destroy planets... everyone agreed it would've been awesome.
Anyway, Novagen ran out of money when the game was almost complete. As a result, the software house disbanded and game was NEVER released. Ever. And Psygnosis went as far as to deny it ever existed, despite the collection of screenshots leaked by former Novagen employees.

History repeats itself...

I'm really suprised how many people actually say that Duke was their favorite game of all time. I didn't realise that there were still so many people waiting to play Duke again. Since we will never see DNF wouldn't this be a good time to make all these fans aware that there are still plenty of people making new content for their favorite game of all time? I bet most of them still think that it's a DOS only game that they can't play anymore. We should seize this opportunity to get the word out there that there are hard working people updating the old classic. I see people posting about trying to get donations for 3DR so that they can finish DNF, How about donating some of that cash to the guys working on Eduke and polymer? Lets try to get a big push of new coders and artists to help bring Duke into the future. All these people coming out of the woodwork reading all these forums lately. There's got to be alot of talented people out there that could help i'm sure. Now is the time to grab the attention of these people. Once the news of 3DR closing dies down, things are gonna get really dead in the Duke community ;)

Prey wasn't just finished by Human Head, it was built from scratch by them. Nothing but ideas and characters survived from the internally developed Prey. I could see something similar happen to Duke but then it might as well be a completely different game. That they will find a developer to finish of this iteration of the game seems less likely though.

Not available in UK but lyrics are also fitting ;)

Any more guys?

Yeah I agree it has to be metal but this is a sad time so a sad song fits. Besides, I like 'em hehe (and yes I am a metaller).

EDIT:- Never heard that song, not that I can remember. I don't often listen to Metallica, except for a few excellent songs.

Re-EDIT:- I do remember that song, the very end fast bit off the end of the Guitar Hero: Metallica trailer and the whole album in a bar on the day it was out.

Continuing your precedent, the whole Mercenary series were unofficially ported to PC, and freely distributed. It's a direct port from the Amiga versions, but not like the PC planned game. Still tho.

What really makes me cringe is the similarity between Novagen and 3DR. Look at this link: http://mercenarysite...e.fr/pcpics.htm

And I quote:
"you know how much a perfectionnist Paul is, remember how long it took him to finish off the original Damocles?"

kpl, you know, there are people who don't know about ports, tc's, mods and maps. I know 'bout it, but it can't help me, I'm such insane that I still waiting for some moment in distant future, when sources and port of Blood will appear... And I don't want that Duke will be buried such a way.

Probably was just people assigned to breaking down the offices and moving crap. If not there might be a shared parking lot with other buildings or offices. Not sure, haven't seen the office building before. Might have to have somebody goto Dallas and Ninja their way into the building and check it out. ;)

Oh yes.

And there are far more examples of projects being canceled that we don't ever get to hear about because some companies don't hype until late in the dev cycle.

They just silently kill the project, the code, and reassign developers or lay them off.

Such is life in the world of Software Engineering.

about those 30 cars in the parking lot... PICS or it didn't happen. Seems a little foolish not to have taken some considering the ammount of scepticism there is around here. 30 cars says who etc. So today: take pics of the lot.

Damn guys.

When there appears to be some light, you guys show off and turn it off all of a sudden.

Too bad the facts look screwed...

Sorry.

It's just.. everyone believes that writing games would be SO cool.

But it's just a job. Like any other job. It may be cool, but it still has objectives, goals, budgets, and all those other things. And when you don't make it, you don't make it.

This recession has killed tens of other companies who were working on projects just as vital to them as DNF was to 3DR. The only difference is, you never got to hear about them before it died out.

It sucks, but most getting into this know full well the risks.

I would definitely have to agree with this as anybody could say that they drove past the office building and could of said anything they wanted to and somebody would believe them. Yea I drove past 3D realms on my way home from work and I noticed George B wearing a purple cape with a fuzzy purple crown laughing as he was smuggling a money filled sack to his car. Pictures would definitely be more believable in this situation come to think about it.

C'mon people. Is it really so strange that there are cars parked outside the building?
It happens you know, cars being parked outside buildings, in fact if I turn my head to the right I can see some right now.
Are you really that desperate now?
Oh my god I saw some cars outside the building holy shit Dukes' back bring the champagne.
3Drealms is getting closed down, thats just the way it is. And closing down an office requires some manpower, and how does that manpower get to said office? It drives in cars.
I really hope we'll get some sort of statement, just to get some closure and get it over with.

Well what they are thinking is the whole hoax scenario and cars in the lot parking lot is giving alot of folks some massive wood and hope, thinking that everyone is all camp and cozy inside 3D realms laughing and having a good old time playing slap ass while all us folks sit in our chairs with a gun pulled to our head waiting for the news. Not that dramatic but I'm sure everyone gets the idea.

Yes I knew what people was hoping for, but it's just getting ridiculous (spelling?), if that isn't grasping at straws I don't know what is.
I really hope the game survives too, but I'm not looking for conspiracies around every corner like some people appears to be.

Actually its quite fun coming up with conspiracies and it passes the time till the announcement this week from apogee or one from Mr GB himself. I personally love listening to the crazy things people come up with, tricking ourselves into thinking that everything is ok to make ourselves feel better. Group hug guys!... or not
