So I watched the newest trailer, and now it seems more like a sequel to doom 2 than a reboot. So, I'm confused.

The story isn't being rebooted. The gameplay is.

Yeah, a gameplay reboot masquerading as a return to form.

I'm not even sure where they went with the story because with the last single player trailer it seems to be treating it as a sequel to maybe like DOOM/DOOM II. I guess it's the opposite of DOOM 3 which restarted the story and drastically changed gameplay.

So does it take place on Mars still or back on Phobos again?

They've basically said it isn't a reboot nor is it a direct sequel.
Think of it as Fury Road, takes place in the same Mad Max universe, doesn't really fit anywhere specifically chronologically

It's a reboot at least because of the name. I wonder if the sequel will be called Doom II.

A couple of images I don't remember seeing before. More concept art here, although I'm sure some of the images have been seen here already.

I really hope if theres a sequel it wont have a number and instead a subtitle, otherwise searching Doom 2 will become a nightmare
At least currently you could search ultimate doom for the original

Search for "Doom 1993", "Doom original", "Doom classic", etc.

Somehow there's already a video of SP gameplay and impressions. Expect heavy spoilers, so watch at your own risk.

That level has been shown off before anyways, so if you've seen all currently released footage, that video won't spoil much

That's good to know. I figured I'd put a warning anyway, just in case.

Naming just pointless for me, even they called it(DooM 2016) just "DooM", I still named it "DooM 4", no one can stop me.

I rather liked the way Serious Sam did their naming.
The First and Second offense are technically SS1, since they both use the exact same engine, enemies, weapons, etc etc with new content added on.
Serious Sam 2 was a new engine, everything made from scratch, with a different polarizing art style.
Serious Sam 3 is also a newer engine, completely different setting, way different tone, and is also a prequel.

Anywho, I got Doom preloaded and ready for Thursday night

Vertical gameplay, less linear levels (more open to exploration, it seems), story not in the way of gameplay. Seems good to me.

Mars.

Nope, it was egypt all over again, but at the start there were some urban levels before going back to the pyramids and touristic attractions.
I agree with the naming though.

I won't argue that, I'm even looking forward to it. I'm just pointing out that its boasts of being "old-school" are a bit off-base since its type of gameplay isn't exactly what Doom was. Non-linearity and exploration, yes, but the style of gunplay and platforming certainly was not. So it's not exactly a "return to form."

Mars.

So, not a direct sequel to Doom/II then.

Yeah, but it was a nice twist on what came before. Fans hadn't seen Egypt since TFE so it was a nice way to bring it back to its roots while keeping it fresh at the same time. Didn't bother me, personally.

A Hollywood, California Target and a few Walmarts broke street date.

Doom accidently released early.

Still, isn't it Steamworks? Isn't it still locked on Steam?

That's PS4 gameplay above. Consoles don't usually have tight restrictions about playing games early.

Not on consoles.

(wow, what a late reply)

I can't wait... but not for the game, as I don't even own a PS4 yet... I just always wanted DooM action figures and they didn't make them in the past. So at least now I will have the Revenant statue.
Still itching for the DooM Diarama, just can't quite do the $350+ thing for it. It really is great looking though.

It looks like Quake 3 Arena with next gen graphics, and monsters.

30 seconds of that video makes me want to go and buy it.
Love Quake 1 and 3.

I think it has a bit of Shadow Warrior 2013 syndrome with having waves of enemies in an arena like area. Also locking the player in an arena until all enemies are killed.

The Serious Sam games and Painkiller do this constantly in apparent interest of "classic FPS gameplay" when I really don't think more is necessarily better and the "classic FPS gameplay" that they're talking about had a smarter monster layout than just sending wave after wave pouring out of certain places in the map. Walk into some arena, door locks quickly behind you. Duke3d for example might have 100+ aliens in a map, but they're generally placed in a way that's fun to play through (obviously this isn't true of all user maps), it's not just spawning waves of monsters. How many fights with these huge back-to-back waves are memorable? It's freaky when it happens sparingly because you're not used to taking on say 10 monsters at once, but when that's all the game is is wave after wave of monsters, it starts feeling like a chore to kill everyone off each time. You start hating seeing big arena areas because the process has that grind feel.

And an upgrade system for your weapons and the character's skills is also less close to the original gameplay approach and seems more close to Shadow Warrior (2013).
