How do you mean? I guess in certain respects. really all they've done is front-faced the way combat in the original Doom games worked.Exposed it to the player a little more.

All this talk of staggering, openings, reading the enemy... That's all there in Doom and Doom II, it's just not written out and really exploited. The biggest "RPG" element would be the weapons customization, but it really doesn't seem that different from 2016. More refined, certainly. Hopefully there aren't any outlying vestigial weapons mods. Nothing that feels wasted.

So many unanswered questions in the first 10 seconds let alone 10 minutes. I assume it's all answered in the lore items though. That's great too because most people just want to get to the fighting which this does wonderfully.

It's a beautiful opening to the game though. I love that it's, very much in the same tone of 2016. No bullshit, just right into the game.

I'm very curious to find out how Doom Slayer got out of Hayden's grip and what happened to Hayden. I know we've seen him in one of the trailers or a screenshot, but the how and why should prove to be very interesting...

Yeah, weapon customization, the runes / perks. Also weaknesses to bullets / plasma / punch... sound like elemental weaknesses.
And the clever build where you freeze and burn your enemies, it's like all the synergies you can find in RPGs and strategy games.
it sounds interesting though, more strategy can be good.

Double Impact got added recently in the Addons list for DOOM and DOOM 2. It is an excellent limit-removing episode for Ultimate Doom, released in 2011 by RottKing & Ralphis. It even won a cacoward back then! For best experience, I highly recommend playing it in one of the classic source ports such as Crispy Doom, Eternity Engine and PrBoom-Plus!

You can download the original version of wad here: https://www.doomworl...ts/d-f/dbimpact

EDIT: Civvie just uploaded a new video!

Wow I kinda remember a penthouse map from a mods pack a long time ago. It was pretty weird. Well, I guess now mods with nudes are pretty generic. (but probably still awkward)

We've come a long way from "we don't want any guitars" to "we want the whole game to feel like a heavy metal album experience."

Well, I hope my GF 1070 is still up to this. But well, since I will stick to 1080p, I guess I'll be OK.

Doom 3? New Shit? Wow.
Yes I have the specs; but Doom 3 is like from 16 years ago. Is it really worth it to buy Doom 3 - Eternal?
Before you answer, can any of those shit kickers aka established developers, make a new game? Is it really that hard to go to a library, read books and make a new 'hero' out of a FPS?
Yes. I am really that burned out of yet another stale, repetitive 'hero', game.

Reading over at the Doomworld forums and saw mention that the specs have disappeared from the Steam store page, with the only thing left being "Requires a 64-bit processor and operating system". Not sure what has happened, but people are saying it's either completely fake to begin with, or they were inaccurate and shouldn't have been released. Not sure if I've ever seen fake specs making it onto a Steam store page before, so it's more likely they were inaccurate. It'll be interesting to see how different the specs will be when they do update the page.

Side question: Bethesda's official Doom 64 release for PC will also be available for people that don't pre-order Eternal or is it a pre-order exclusive bonus? Asking because I hate pre-ordering, but getting a version of D64 that is not a TC or an emulated ROM would be really something.

I seriously doubt it's a pre-order only bonus.

From the official announcements it is a pre-order only bonus.

"In addition, Doom 64 has been added as a pre-order bonus and will be available to download for free on all platforms for those who secure their copy of Doom Eternal early."

https://www.gamespot...-/1100-6460860/

Yes, it is gamespot, but the articel quotes the original statement.

I think there isn't any clear statement regarding that anywhere yet. A pre-order exclusive offer might spice up the whole thing considerably, ofc.

I ain't gonna play the spoil sport here. If you look forward to this, enjoy, and don’t read any further.

Doom 1, captured my imagination, Doom 2 did not. Quake captured my imagination. Especially the Vore. When I was young, with a flue, I had nightmares. The Vore was a literal incarnation of one of those nightmares. I fell instantly in love with Quake. Quake II was a new game. New enemies, new play style. And there too, the Berserker reminded me on my obnoxious boss in Germany. It’s another treasure game in my collection.
There are many more games, that touched my imagination. Prey, Rage, Shadow Warrior 2013, Half Life, Ion Fury etc. all showed fresh vivid ideas. Yes, one runs out of ideas sometimes. Solution, go to a place that free up your juices. Mine is the library or the park across my shack.
Now my million-dollar question: Doom Eternal promises same enemies (ugly, not really scary), but now they come in greater numbers, new weapons and you can now jump higher - with all the talent out there, a masterpiece to look forward too? Sounds to me, any mod team could have done this, for free.

Quake is a difficult topic. The game isn't what id set out to do at first, they turned it into a traditional shooter only after a while. It's also at least partially incomplete since ep.1 is the only one with a real end boss. Vores were the gapfillers later on. It's also overshadowed by Romero's departure from id due to lack of commitment (and other factors).

Taken that into consideration, it's a small miracle Quake still turned out to be a milestone title. Anyway, we are lucky to have it.

So, according to this German article, the status of Doom64 has been clearified.

The official PC release of Doom64 will contain a new chapter about the sister of the Motherdemon which you killed at the end of the original campaign. Kaiser (who is responsible for the release, which I had not been aware of until now) said that the game will support refresh rates higher than 60 Hz and more than 1.000 fps are possible. Now the important part: Doom64 will be released on March 20 for PC, PS4, One and Switch. Eternal pre-orders get it for free. This means there will be a standalone version that you can buy. I guess this is going to be the official successor of Doom64 EX, then.

Sadly, this info reaches me a bit too late since I pre-ordered Eternal yesterday, assuming D64 would be pre-order only.

No, i'm legitimately interested in what you meant by what you said and what you have to say on the matter. We've got some damn near hyperbolic hype regarding this game. "You'll never play another FPS game again" and the like.

I can see what you're saying, certainly. I think with Doom Eternal the important thing to realize is that it is building off of what the first one did, and the aim is simply to really refine what the first one did. That's the objective of the game design. They weren't aiming for revolution on Doom Eternal. At least not from what I've heard Hugo and Mr Stratton say.

Also, with that in mind, when you go from Doom through id's library up to Quake III, frankly nothing really changes. Art direction changes, the location of the games change, but ultimately the core of the games is identical. By design. They got it right with Doom, and ultimately as a company they didn't really deviate from it. Guns, Monsters, Maze, Keys, Kill and Leave. Quake 1 had a Gothic horror vibe, Quake II had more tertiary story telling.

Most FPS games are not revolutionary today, which is an issue. It would be hard to even make a list of which games i'd choose out of the pantheon to make up the truly "revolutionary."

Wow. Says they've upped the minimum resolution from 720p to 1080p. 1080p is a minimum resolution now.
