It wasn't quick at all. In fact, I'm surprised it took so long. The game takes 6:30 to beat when you explore everything.

Hm, personally I think It is pretty quick if you finish a game on one day. It even took me one week to finish HL: Episode 1, because I never played it more than a hour per day. ^^

That's true, i think it's because of the fact, that i barely used a savegame at all, through out the whole game... (thanks to the Deathwalk feature... I never had to re-play a whole section again, fighting the same enemies once more...)
I used plaenty of time to explore, and have fun etc...

I also didn't play from my demo savegames... I wanted to experience it all in one whole blow... :)

Deathwalking will certainly play a role, but the biggest contributor to the short length was the fact that the puzzles are WAY too easy. Especially considering the game was advertised for bringing good puzzles to the first person shooter genre.

The manual and the training tells me I can peek through doors (not completely opening them) by choosing the "peek door" interaction. Well, how do I do this? I only see the "open door" interaction when standing next to a door.

Well, for some, good is equivalent to "hard", but that's not always the case...
I liked them, because they were different from other games... So i think they were good, despite the easy-ness... :)

Can someone tell me why an alarm gets sounded sometimes because "a body has been found", while in fact no one could possibly have passed in that area (reason: the way it's available, or the fact all enemies are already unconcious in the previous parts of the level :)). The game doesn't automatically sound an alarm at random times when a body isn't completely hidden in the dark, right? That would be unfair.

I never had that happen to me Cerb, but it is a common complaint. In the later two games they tell you when a body is hidden and unless its directly in another guard's path they'll never see it.

I'm not far because I haven't played anymore since last time, I was just trying it out, I'm going to finish the game I already started on my old Windows 98 PC first: Heart of Darkness. It sucks so I'm hoping it ends soon B) If the storyline is any indication I'm very close to the end. Then I'll play Monkey Island.

And on my XP computer:

I finished Prey yesterday. Wow, this game was really worth the long waiting. Story-wise this game has so much to offer and takes first-person story telling to a whole new level in my opinion. Tommy is a charismatic character and you can understand his motivations. The music perfectly underlines the events of the game (especially at the end) and never felt forced. The last levels were freakin' genious. But I generally loved the Level Design, it never got boring and offered enough variety even though it plays on a spaceship most of the time.
I also don't understand why many people think it's too short. I started playing the game last week and finished it yesterday. I played a few levels every day and never got the feeling this game was too short. On the other hand, I've spent a lot of time playing the arcade games and looking for secrets.

What does Prey's story have that others don't? In fact, I think FEAR's story was way more revolutionary than Prey's. Even infacter, I think Prey doesn't have anything revolutionary to offer at all, story-wise.

I think the music felt way too forced when the Rubix' Cube formed. It tried to climax way too much. I liked the humming of the engine of the E3 2005 video more as sound whe the cube gets formed.

What is so genial about them? You fight Keeper after Keeper, then you get a cliché puzzle boss.

I'm glad you liked the game so much, but I thought Prey's level design is one of the least varied of most first person shooters I've ever played. Especially considering they're pulling the exact same forcefield trick off every level. You just turn it off behind the corner. Never a good puzzle.

You don't have to look at how many days you played, but at the amount of hours. You can check the time on your latest autosave to see how much hours you played before you got to the end boss. Mine says 6:12 so let's say the game took 6:30 to beat. That's inexcusably short for a game where we got promised 12 hours with mind boggling puzzles.

Hm, I didn't feel very involved in Fear's storyline and thought it was pretty boring. In Prey though, I liked the way the main character's attitude changed throughout the storyline (there was virtually no character development in games like Fear or HL2). I also think it was indeed emotionally very absorbing in which directions the story went at the end.

Regarding the level design, I can understand if you didn't like it that much. But I loved the scenery and for me, portals and wallwalk enhanced the game in a great way. I generally enjoy games (e.g. System Shock 2) in spaceships or something similar.
Out of curiosity, what did you like more in Fear than in Prey, regarding the level design?
Sorry to hear that you didn't like the game though, but tastes differ.

I also think you misinterpreted my last point. Of course, 6:30 isn't very long. What I was trying to say is that I never got the feeling that the game is short. Even now, looking back, I still feel very satisfied.

It's still the most complex in any game. I've been explained the story around 4 times already and I keep forgetting some of the items of the storyline :)

There was character development in Prey, but it was nothing special to me. I found his attitude at the beginning very annoying, and unrealistic (After he discovered the spiritwalking helps him out greatly, he starts insulting his grandfather AGAIN next time he's called? that's such nonsense).

I don't think there was anything emotional about this game's storyline. Not even the part we are all currently thinking of, it horribly failed. The most emotional moment in the game for me was in Facing the Enemy at the beginning (right after the aliens invaded the land of the ancients). Where Tommy screamed "die! die!" at everyone.
It's not a problem with the extend storylines affect me in games. Because after all, Prince of Persia could do it for me.

I generally like such art direction as well (Doom 3, System Shock 2, Quake 2, Sin's sewer levels), but Prey doesn't do it for me. It has something to do with the colors I think, Quake 4 had the same problem for me, but it's not as bad as Prey.
I like the wallwalks too, and the portals, but it's just so disappointing those 2 features were never used in another way than getting from point A to B. No puzzles like we were promised. It's such wasted potential.

Halcyon, on Jul 26 2006, 06:06 PM, said:

The fact there are little holes everywhere, where you collect such permanent +5 armor or reflex duration upgrades. I loved how they hid such goodies as well in Doom 3. In a dark corner, behind a pipe, in a ventilation shaft, behind crates, ...
Also the way dynamic lighting is used in the levels. It's part of the atmosphere in Doom 3 & FEAR. Not in Prey and Quake 4, there it's just a nice extra.

I can see why anyone likes the game so much though. The game is just nothing like we were promised. I 99% agree with the Gamespot review.

That doesn't explain why you can't understand how anyone can find this game too short though. Especially considering you clearly state yourself 6:30 is very short.

I remember how Doom 3 took me 2 weeks. It took me near 25 hours to beat. Most satisfying experience I've had in a very long time. And if the progress of the length of games towards the future is any indication, it's going to be one of the last...

Like I said, to me it never felt very short. That's it. If you think it's short, then I don't have a problem with, that's your oppinion. I just stated my humble opinion. :)

I agree though, Doom 3 was very good in terms of length.

Okay, okay, okay, I said it for christ's sake. Yes, Iam guilty. Satisfied? :)

On other news, I played some True Crime: New York City. I don't know how the console versions are, but the PC version is horrible. It's full of bugs, the controls are totally messed up and the menu doesn't even have mouse-support. On the plus side, the voice acting is pretty good and the soundtrack is not bad at all. But that doesn't help, till now the game just isn't fun. I'll probably play a little further, but I'm glad that it's just a reviewer's copy I got from the german publisher.
