Laptops.  "Your favorite laptop?"

#1

Just sold one of my laptops and try to sell the other. IIRC it had an AMD Quad-Core 1.5 GHz. 17 inches, and a Radeon 512-MB 5XXX or 6XXX. Now getting this Intel-powered laptop w/ a NVidia GTX 660M! No way in *HELL* I'm getting a laptop w/ Windows 8.

Anyways what laptop do you have or getting a new one in the future?

I've got an ASUS N53SN. Intel I5 2410M Dual-Core 2.3GHz, 4GB RAM, GeForce GT 550M 2GB, 640GB HDD split into 2 partitions, Windows 7 Hom Prem, DX11, DVD-Multi drive. 15" 1920x1080. There was a version with a slightly lower grade video card but with a blu-ray drive for just a bit more, but I didn't see it and got this one instead. Ah well. It's pretty good. Got it a year and a half ago. Very nice. Plays all the games I want. Does everything my Desktop does except on the go, minus a tiny bit of performance. Love it. I see no need for me to upgrade for a while. The only thing I don't like is that it doesn't have Firewire and it doesn't have PCMCIA or anything to add one.

I have an Asus G51VX with a 2.0GHz C2D OC'd to 2.4GHz, a 1GB NVidia GTX 260M, 320GB HD, 4GB DDR2, 15" 1366x768 display.

It's a well made machine that gets the job done. It needs a faster CPU though, but I keep putting it off. My first and last gaming laptop. You end up never gaming on it, and it's outdated in a year.

I have an Acer Aspire 5733. I've had a better experience with a Dell Inspiron (don't remember what number) and a Dell XPS (again don't remember the number).

I have an IBM ThinkPad 380XD

Pentium 266 mhz CPU, 64 MB ram, WIN98SE. The only reason I still have it is because of some old software to interface with electronics test equipment and Two-way radios I have. The various pieces of software run in DOS and WIN and some need the old fashioned version of the serial port and one program crashes on any CPU faster than what this computer has. I have the docking station, external keyboard, PCMCIA ?? network card , CDROM/ floppy drive and USB port. It runs the original Duke3d game fine too. Thats important. :) If you think this one is ancient, the one I had before this one was a 386 CPU laptop. The drive died so I replaced that laptop with the current one.

I have a Toshiba with a P200 and 32MB RAM.

Fun fact: The P266 was laptop only. They never made a desktop version.

Old hardware is fun. Even if it ends up sitting and collecting dust, it's just nostalgic and cool.

It's a Dell with a nicer sticker on it.

Their video cards never have brand names on them.

Their cases have terrible airflow.

The parts are borderline generic.

Their name hasn't meant shit in ten years.

Back in the late 2000's my friend's laptop went through about 3 motherboards.

Yeah, when you have John Romero and John Carmack deathmatching each other; each sat in opposite corporate boxes, each playing their side of the screen of the Cowboys stadium and being regularly supplied with beers by strippers, then get back to us.

So which is the best brand for gaming laptops? I think it's MSI what I've heard.

You are better off building a Desktop for PC gaming.

However, If you prefer a laptop i would suggest the Samsung series 7 or Lenovo Y series.

My vote is for the Lenovo Y510p - dual video cards in a laptop that's no bigger than a standard 15".
