That doesn't make a difference. They still got paid for it.

You could theoretically make a Kickstarter campaign and still profit while the game is free to play.

"Free to play" is not "free" or "freeware". "Free to play" is still a commercial game.

Maybe they could Release it like Black Mesa Source? kinda like that?

That was the plan, but GBX blocked them from doing that.

Gearbox probably knows that Interceptor wouldn't want to waste huge amounts of its now valuable time trying to push out a free game, which is why they're only being so "open" about it now.

I think we should make Tea Monster happy and just get Interceptor to release what they've currently done for Duke Reloaded. That way even if it's very unfinished and/or crap, at least it would be a legal means of modding Duke on a modern 3D engine. IIRC Gearbox said Interceptor can release it whenever they want.

Gearbox really are giant evil assholes, Interceptor can't hide behind the "it's Gearbox's decision" excuse anymore and if they don't bring Reloaded back like they claimed they really wanted to do, then they'll be seen as liars just like Gearbox.

Someone at Interceptor is gonna to have to make an announcement soon. I asked one of the devs on the ROTT steam group chat and he said:

Yeah, the best solution would be to release it as it is. Interceptor wouldn't have to work on it anymore (which I'm sure they probably don't want to at this point) and it would finally satisfy the fans. I definitely don't see the fans shutting up about it now, so they're going to have to do something to put this to rest. :P

I really don't think they have anything worth releasing :/ I think there should be a move to get a community license for a mod made for udk.

A move that will be shutdown by GBX.

Yeah but if Interceptor releases what they've done with Reloaded, regardless of quality and completion, the community will effectively have a licence to make Duke related stuff on Unreal (using "Reloaded").

Gearbox have publicly stated that Interceptor can release it any time they want. Therefore if they change their minds again, they'll look like the biggest mega dicks of the century.
Personally I don't think they can afford another fiasco after DNF, Reloaded, and A:CM.

They would say the license/contract was made specifically for Interceptor. Given that they're at least a semi-professional outfit GBX would be vindicated. Especially if Interceptor's release would prove to be a disaster.

Seriously, why the hell Reloaded gets so much news and recognition? They haven't show anything worthwhile aside from E1L1. I don't know how they were supposed to remake an episode, let alone whole game.

The only thing they have officially shown is a bin. I don't get it either! :/

Yes, they will abandon all commercial projects to work on the free DN:R again. Who cares for payment and needing to pay bills if some random idiot from the Duke 4 forums demands it.

It is common, public knowledge (especially here at Duke4) that there isn't more then a semi finished E1L1 and half the gameplay coding finished.

I wonder what part of "work is on hold" people didn't understand?

That's a good point. Why would they work for free on Duke Nukem Reloaded considering how disastrous their previous commercial project turned out to be.

But it had so much potential! It's Duke Nukem 3d on UE3! I mean, wow!

If they had no intention of going back to it I still think it would be cool if they released everything for someone else to work on it

I mean it may be shitty and unfinished, but you'd be surprised at how dedicated some fans are. I've seen people do more with less.

Unless gearbox would allow a non-commercial duke license for another project, then that would could just be open source from the start, but that's doubtful.

Regardless of how anyone feels about it, it would still be a platform for doing something duke related that isn't based on an engine originally made in the 90s - as great as Eduke is, it wouldn't be a bad thing to have more platforms to work with.

This would be way better.
How would we contact them? Would it be best for TerminX, or probably Yatta to contact them and ask 'officially'?

Let it go, it's a lost cause. Were GBX so nice they wouldn't have blocked mod-related holes in DNF.

Granting a non-commercial license to everyone would be unheard of for a big company. What was then the point of acquiring IP?

Nah, I have zero involvement with Gearbox. I have involvement with 3DR, who is currently in the middle of a lawsuit with Gearbox, though. :P

Would it not be you to make the contact and take responsibility for said project?
Worst case, you get a no, so what. If you are comfi with Unreal, just make a map or sample what you want to do and go from there.

Because:

1. I'm up to my eyeballs in rendering living rooms so I dont' have the time to get involved in a mod project at the moment - Especially not creating a new game from scratch.
2. I know that Yatta has connections with at least someone at GBX as he was contacted by them during the DNF press launch. They are fare more likely to see him as some kind of figure in the fan community than some dude who's made a few models.

EDIT: Sod it, I'll put my money where my mouth is and write something up.

I just want people to be fully aware that I am not in a position to do anything about it at the moment. I've got some ideas for a mod and I'd love to do something eventually, but I've got way too much on at the moment.
