Shadow Warrior (2013) Thread  "New Shadow Warrior Game Announced"

User is offline   Ronin

Good to hear positive first impressions, I'll wait to see how people feel about it once the dust settles. Anyway, I'm making my way through GTA V now and once the multiplayer comes out that will probably be the only game I play for a while, and by the time I've had my fill of that, Shadow Warrior should be nice and affordable.

I know it's linear, but do the secret areas encourage exploration or are they very easy to find? Also is there a kick attack?

"Nice and affordable"? Did you get GTA5 for free or something? Shadow Warrior costs half as much as any new AAA title.

Shadow Warrior never had a kick. He had a punch and a sword. Oh, and a nuclear warhead. Tell me, is there a nuclear warhead? Oh, please let there be a nuclear warhead.

Not true. There's a kick in the SW beta.

I can't seem to quote properly on iPad but.

There are secrets in the game. These are in the form of blowing up walls or following certain corridors to find a reward somewhere in the end. There is somewhat back tracking in some of the levels but after most checkpoints you can't go back but on some levels you will revisit previous sections after getting keys or key cards for example.

There is some kind of kicking function that I haven't worked out yet but if you dash forward and attack Lo Wang seems to do some kind of quick ninja kick.

There is a nuke upgrade too with a reference to a certain other hero who likes nukes.

So, I was just playing the new Shadow Warrior and noticed it has quick save/load and you can disable the checkpoint system altogether.

That info totally made my day. So in the end, it's maybe not unsimilar to Daikatana after it got patched (where you could disable the gem savepoints and use the traditional quicksafe system instead). It's a fair move by the developers, and I hope the ROTT guys are reading this and realizing it's quite possible to have both systems (ofc it's a different game and I dunno about technical obstacles, but anyway). Opposite to ROTT which I still won't play for the time being, playing SW right after release shouldn't be a problem IMHO. ^^

Fortune cookie says:
"Quicksave system! Lo Wang like dat!"

Lo Wang never did look like a DCC or Minidisc enthusiast to me.

Yes "Nice and affordable", when you buy one game that costs money, if you were to buy 2 games that's even more money. After buying GTA V I can't afford the luxury of buying another game so soon even if it's just €25. Anyway glad to hear that there is a kick, kicks are good.

It's getting 6/10 most reviews. No surprise.

I like how the reviews all sound like they're trying to be profound and elitist. Most of the complaints are that the game is too long, or it's too much like old FPS'es like Doom or Duke Nukem, or that it's not ambitious enough.

It's a no-win battle for retro FPS'es.

I played for half an hour or so and I am liking it a lot so far. Although it is a totally different game from the classic Shadow Warrior. The only thing I think is not that great so far is that the upgrading can get a bit in the way of the game's flow.

And yes, there are secrets.

'Completely against my expectations, I can’t think of a first-person shooter I’ve enjoyed more this year. Owing as much of a debt to Serious Sam as to the game that it takes its name from, Shadow Warrior rarely pauses for breath. In fact, it rarely changes pace at all. Wang’s movement seemed erratic to me at first, too fast and slippery, but I soon realised that I had it all wrong. Other games are too slow. When there are this many demons to kill and so many ways to kill them, it’s better to move fast and to carry a big sword. Job done.'

The original Shadow Warrior received mediocre reviews. A 75% for Pc Gamer (5 less than DNF!) and 2 1/2 stars from CGW. The main points they dinged were the apparent racism and dated graphics. You have to look at who's criticising it. There's always going to be some droll dork who thinks if they slam a game they'll come across more discerning than they really are. I love shooters. Shadow Warrior is a fantastic shooter.

Love it so far. Not nearly as Painkiller-y (or Serious Sam-y) as I had feared, which is for me a good thing. Even though I liked Hard Reset, this feels like a huge improvement in every way.
Still don't like the new Wang though.

Best FPS since DNF

The game and the action is nice ... but one thing to those who have played it and know the action in firefights: Imagine it with the original Lo Wang's voice or a (younger) voice close to it.

I also think the voice is too smooth and calm overall.

But that doesn't drag the game down too much.

Tried it at my friends. Not worth the full price nor 25% off. At 10-20$ I will buy it. It's a cool game but well let's be honest. Not a SW game and it has no mp. it's pretty good tho. 6/10 if you compare price/quality. 8.5/10 if it was around 15-20$ (I really think the game is overpriced I was aiming at 20$ before price announcement)
Anyway, hopefully 50% off at winter sales I would make one of my friends from a zone 2 European country buy it
If it won't be on sale this Christmas I will probably wait for a 75-90% off during summer sales next year.

I will to see a couple of gameplay videos. And from I see there is a GOG version, so I'm going to buy it from GOG.com.

Well you can't fix stupid. Asking $20 for new game is retarded, it takes a lot of man hours to make a game.

Remember to switch melee weapon steering to advanced. It makes the katana combat sublime.

Played what I could, unfortunately while the game looked pretty amazing even at low settings my card can't run it at a playable framerate. I managed to get to the second level and decided I was doing the game a disservice by playing it in the barely 10 digit range. Still what I played was really fun, I got a few chuckles out of the dialogue (especially Hogi's lines to Lo wang at the end of the first episode) I only managed 3/8 secrets  The game IS nothing like the original, but so far it's very entertaining and the new Lo Wang stands out on his own.

Only said thing is that it felt really weird to see a Serious Sam arcade machine but not a Duke one  This could of been our chance for a real Duke/Wang crossover!

Other than the Shadow Warrior one, I think the arcade machines are only Devolver Digital/Flying Wild Hog games, I also saw Hard Rest and Hotline Miami. Maybe they would've needed Gearbox's permission to make a Duke machine.

Anyway, I am really enjoying it. The katana is one of the most fun weapons I've ever used in a game. I noticed blood drips downs walls just like in Duke 3D and the original SW.

I love this game so far. I played through the first few levels and the sword play is really satisfying. I mean...it is disturbingly satisfying.

Also, this was the best part of the first real level. A nice throw back:

The bit at the end

Ah, so they included the anime girls but they didn't bother to remake them in HD instead plopping in the old sprites. I'm guessing they didn't have confidence in their artistic ability to make an anime girl and or no one who could?

The concept of adding 8-bit sprites we all know into a new HD game is actually pretty cool imo.

What? They used the sprites as an easter egg, a throwback to the original game. Not because they were lazy or didn't have confidence in their artists... seriously, stop smoking crack.

Yeah. The original game art is a nice touch for an easter egg. I like the bunnies being brought back but, as strange as it sounds, I feel like they looked better as sprites.

This game is a lot of fun to just play with the sword. Who needs guns? Except for when there is just a ton of baddies charging at me and I am losing health fast...

I'm not taking back what I said earlier even if I'm the only one who thinks so. I don't care if anyone makes any disparaging comments about me either like accusing me of smoking crack or even downvote me into oblivion. I stand by what I say.

So you really think they used sprites from the original game because they couldn't create a female model, and not as an easter egg?

Sorry, but you're retarded.

You're out of line TerminX. It's even worse now calling me retarded. What's wrong with you? That's just plain rude. To answer your question though.. I would have preferred if they had at least made HD sprites and a good anime style model would be even better. But that's just my personal opinion no need to fall off your rocker.
