Shadow Warrior (2013) Thread "New Shadow Warrior Game Announced"
#871 Posted 25 September 2013 - 03:24 PM
I know it's linear, but do the secret areas encourage exploration or are they very easy to find? Also is there a kick attack?
#872 Posted 25 September 2013 - 05:05 PM
Shadow Warrior never had a kick. He had a punch and a sword. Oh, and a nuclear warhead. Tell me, is there a nuclear warhead? Oh, please let there be a nuclear warhead.

Not true. There's a kick in the SW beta.

There are secrets in the game. These are in the form of blowing up walls or following certain corridors to find a reward somewhere in the end. There is somewhat back tracking in some of the levels but after most checkpoints you can't go back but on some levels you will revisit previous sections after getting keys or key cards for example.
There is some kind of kicking function that I haven't worked out yet but if you dash forward and attack Lo Wang seems to do some kind of quick ninja kick.
There is a nuke upgrade too with a reference to a certain other hero who likes nukes.

That info totally made my day. So in the end, it's maybe not unsimilar to Daikatana after it got patched (where you could disable the gem savepoints and use the traditional quicksafe system instead). It's a fair move by the developers, and I hope the ROTT guys are reading this and realizing it's quite possible to have both systems (ofc it's a different game and I dunno about technical obstacles, but anyway). Opposite to ROTT which I still won't play for the time being, playing SW right after release shouldn't be a problem IMHO. ^^

Yes "Nice and affordable", when you buy one game that costs money, if you were to buy 2 games that's even more money. After buying GTA V I can't afford the luxury of buying another game so soon even if it's just €25. Anyway glad to hear that there is a kick, kicks are good.

It's a no-win battle for retro FPS'es.

And yes, there are secrets.

'Completely against my expectations, I can’t think of a first-person shooter I’ve enjoyed more this year. Owing as much of a debt to Serious Sam as to the game that it takes its name from, Shadow Warrior rarely pauses for breath. In fact, it rarely changes pace at all. Wang’s movement seemed erratic to me at first, too fast and slippery, but I soon realised that I had it all wrong. Other games are too slow. When there are this many demons to kill and so many ways to kill them, it’s better to move fast and to carry a big sword. Job done.'
The original Shadow Warrior received mediocre reviews. A 75% for Pc Gamer (5 less than DNF!) and 2 1/2 stars from CGW. The main points they dinged were the apparent racism and dated graphics. You have to look at who's criticising it. There's always going to be some droll dork who thinks if they slam a game they'll come across more discerning than they really are. I love shooters. Shadow Warrior is a fantastic shooter.

Still don't like the new Wang though.
Best FPS since DNF

I also think the voice is too smooth and calm overall.
But that doesn't drag the game down too much.

Anyway, hopefully 50% off at winter sales I would make one of my friends from a zone 2 European country buy it
If it won't be on sale this Christmas I will probably wait for a 75-90% off during summer sales next year.

Well you can't fix stupid. Asking $20 for new game is retarded, it takes a lot of man hours to make a game.

Only said thing is that it felt really weird to see a Serious Sam arcade machine but not a Duke one

Other than the Shadow Warrior one, I think the arcade machines are only Devolver Digital/Flying Wild Hog games, I also saw Hard Rest and Hotline Miami. Maybe they would've needed Gearbox's permission to make a Duke machine.
Anyway, I am really enjoying it. The katana is one of the most fun weapons I've ever used in a game. I noticed blood drips downs walls just like in Duke 3D and the original SW.

Also, this was the best part of the first real level. A nice throw back:

What? They used the sprites as an easter egg, a throwback to the original game. Not because they were lazy or didn't have confidence in their artists... seriously, stop smoking crack.

This game is a lot of fun to just play with the sword. Who needs guns? Except for when there is just a ton of baddies charging at me and I am losing health fast...

So you really think they used sprites from the original game because they couldn't create a female model, and not as an easter egg?
Sorry, but you're retarded.
