I didn't know what the game would look like until I saw the screenshots on Devolver's site. I thought it looked very colorful and dreamlike. Then I saw the gameplay video: it looked VERY impressive. The new SW seems to play like a cross between Kill Bill and Serious Sam, yet I like the samurai sword gameplay, the environments, the colors, and the creatures I've seen. I doubt that this game will include naked anime women in awkward spots shooting their personal uzis at you when you get to close, the original SW's over-the-top Chino-Japanese parody dirty humor, or Monty Python references (THAT'S NO ORDINARY RABBIT!). However, I'm looking forward to how this re-imagining will tell the original storyline, how Zilla and his corporation will be portrayed, what orginal enemies will return, what weapons will be included, and whether any Tenchu-like stealth gameplay might appear. I wonder if the snake demon and sumo boss will reappear in re-imagined form, and whether new bosses will be made for the game.
I like it that human enemies are in the game, because Zilla must have regular personnel besides the undead demons he's been surrounding himself with.
I take it that Lo Wang will be strictly Japanese this time, instead of a vague amalgam of Chinese and Japanese, like a strange mix between Fu Manchu/Bruce Lee/Toshiru Mifune? If so, I don't know if they'll call him Lo Wang anymore (unless they're going to make him a half-Chinese Japanese, which would explain his Chinese name). As over-the-top and absolutely ridiculous the Asian parody was in the original SW, I don't thing that aspect of the game should be thrown away. There are ways to make it work, but I haven't seen how the game will play, so who knows?
If the new SW doesn't measure well with the original SW, the engine is awesome enough for some modders to recreate and enhance the original SW with that engine. Such a mod could be the SW equivalent of the new ROTT.
I wonder what the new SW would be like if it did have the new ROTT team work on it.
The news of the new SW made me think of how I would've done an SW2. My vision of an SW sequel would be to keep the humor and Lo Wang's personality, but add some straightman Asian characters who are wondering why the hell Lo Wang is acting like he's on SNL or MadTV. Then, you have the Anime Asian characters, who are extremely off-the-wall, kind of like a Japanese equivalent of Roger Rabbit and fellow Toon Towners, and they live in random parts of Japan and Korea. The game would have that old polygonal 3D look, like Dark Forces II: Jedi Knight and Tenchu: Stealth Assassins, and the gameplay would be a freeform mix of head-on action and stealth. The stealth would borrow from Tenchu: Stealth Assassins, the realistic sword combat from Bushido Blade, and the hand-to-hand combat would be influenced by Bruce Lee's lightning quick Jeet Kune Do choreography. For the humor, I'd look for inspiration in South Park and Conker's Bad Fur Day, and reference notable martial arts pop culture like the Kung Fu TV series, The Seven Samurai, Harakiri, The Five Deadly Venoms, The Wu-Tang Clan, and perhaps Daikatana.
I visualize the bosses being a gigantic sharp-toothed frog in a massive lily pond, a Japanese demon dog, a titanic Budai statue gone awry, a rampaging Anime alien (a la Freeza, Piccolo, or Vegeta), and a dragon which resembles Shenron.
