Shadow Warrior (2013) Thread  "New Shadow Warrior Game Announced"

#181

Quote

Lo Wang, he’s still a smartass… but it’s a much more clever sense of humor and wit, rather than relying on the old Duke Nukem or Shadow Warrior tropes, falling back on jokes about women and racial stereotyping.”

Still, aren’t fans going to be pissed? Part of the appeal was the utter lack of regard for good taste and political correctness.

“We discussed that, and that’s just a decision that had to be made. Before we even talked to Flying Wild Hog, that was the decision,” Lowrie said.

So basically this game is for pretentious fags and for the Justin Bieber generation...

It might actually be for me because if the game is good, it has lots of chances to be better in my eyes than the first one.
I already said the first one wasn't really part of my fav old games so this might actually be better to me at least.
Though I hate when devs admit their game is politically correct or that their game is a politically correct remake of a game that hated political correctness.

Promoting this game must be a nightmare. If there was even a hint of racism in this re-imagining, that would be the sole story. It's the only thing the press would be talking about. Just like certain fools who look back on Duke 3D and dismiss it as a game about strippers and pilfered Bruce Campbell one-liners, people look back on Shadow Warrior, whether right or wrong, as an incredibly racist game - like minstrel show, they're happy it's no longer viable entertainment. We're in a Kotaku generation. Critics and press would leave out, or superficially address, all the great innovations that Shadow Warrior brought to shooters, while writing editorials centred around how appalling the depictions of race in Shadow Warrior is. Remember how Duke Nukem Forever became the game that condones rape? It's irrelevant if it's true or not, there will be enough articles that most folks will pick it up through osmosis and won't care to investigate for themselves.

At the Gearbox community day 2011, George Broussard said there was next to no chance of a new Shadow Warrior as it sold about a tenth as well as Duke 3d. Either someone like Digital Devolver rolls the dice and and does something new with Shadow Warrior, or it lays dormant forever.

If Devolver does not have the talent to write satirical humour, at least they are honest and stay away from it. I'd rather have that then someone trying and messing it up.

I'd rather a developer handle the character properly.

They have one of the writers from The Witcher 2 working on this. For me, the story was the weakest link in Hard Reset. It was incompetent. http://www.joystiq.c...the-modern-era/

"First of all, we wanted to be a little bit true to the original story of Shadow Warrior," Lead Writer Jan Bartkowicz told us. "It wasn't a game that was heavy on story in any way, but there were some core elements to this IP that we felt we really need to have in a reimagined version."

The original game had players controlling Lo Wang, a former bodyguard for the evil Master Zilla, who ran a mega corporation in Japan with the goal of taking over the world. Bartkowicz said the original narrative wasn't very cohesive, and the game boiled down to "a lot of pretty original environments, cool level design and some crazy enemies." It lacked narrative structure, something the reimagined version will receive.

Bartkowicz – who co-developed the story and wrote dialogue for CD Projekt RED's The Witcher 2 – said he looks forward to crafting a more linear story for Lo Wang's return in Shadow Warrior. "We invented this entire 'Shadow Realm' and delved deeper into a story that was, I wouldn't say it was slapped together, but it was very simple. It was just a reason for you to kill a lot of people in a 90s game," Bartkowicz said.

The lack of a detailed narrative pushing players into action worked fine for games of the distant 90s era, but modern players crave more context. In the reimagined game, Lo Wang is sent to track down a legendary Nobitsura Kage blade, and is aided by a banished spirit named Hoji in discovering the truth behind a demonic invasion."

Hmm, I'll probably play this when it turns up, but I am not excited for it. I want non-linear levels, ancient chinese secret, you no mess with Lo Wang - I don't like the idea of young lo wang - why do they keep making these chars younger! I doubt there'll be any anime girls and jokes relating to them and if there are no driveable vehicles I will be upset.

Still, I haven't seen the game yet and it might be good for other reasons so I am willing to give it a chance.

I got two problems surrounding this whole thing.

First off: the politically correct and modernized elements are not sitting well with me.
I get it that a more serous and overall better narrative is required but alot of this is simply coming off as a result of laziness and not wanting to deal with the Kotaku and Destructoid brigade who would otherwise come down on the game for every petty reason you can imagine.
Whatever people thought of DNF, at least the elements were there.
What's next? Duke Nukem no longer likes going to strip clubs because he doesn't like belittling women? He now wears a purity ring?
I mean come on, a good writer can incorporate any and every element that either character possessed and do something creative with it.
On a sidenote, if the same guy who was partially responsible for TW2 is on this, i am really worried about the dialogue.
TW2 had a really poor translation done on it so that's a bit of an issue.
I was hoping for a story in the same vein as Big Trouble in Little China.
Doesn't look like were getting that.

The other problem i have is that im really afraid this is simply going to be a reskin of Hard Reset.
I know alot of people liked it but i was decidedly not in that camp.
Yeah, a superficial glance at the game can provide comparisons to older FPS but design wise, i found it to be all over the map.

I guess we have to wait and see.

Are you thinking of the first Witcher game? That one had a poor translation done by an outside source, which CD Projekt later fixed in the enhanced edition. TW2's English script was written by them alongside the Polish version so any bad writing is probably just bad writing, not bad translation.

Im actually thinking of the second, seeing as how i never touched the first .
The dialogue in TW2 was pretty cringe worthy but the story was good i found.

There's still room for tongue in cheek or even big trouble in little china stuff using the art direction they are taking. They seem to draw inspiration from movies like Kill Bill.. there's some tongue in cheek stuff in that.

BTW, for the most part Big Trouble in Little China wasn't more colorful than this game is.... what made that movie was less the colorful characters or (which there where none... the visual style was mostly realistic) and more the characterizations and writing which we haven't seen yet here. We STILL haven't seen much yet apart from a handful of screenshots and a teaser video that shows little. I think people are jumping to conclusions a bit too early.

There may still end up being stuff that offends people in it. That's a risk you take when you are shall we say.. not the race that's represented in the game yet you are making something that people might think represents them.

I can't be the only one who is a bit cynical about that.
Hard Reset contains those same basic elements as well as SS but they don't play like games like SW, Duke and others.
It's good to have the one liners though, and that last line gave me a chuckle.

Really need to see some SP footage and see some Wang.

I'm so tired of political correctness. It used to be this semi-constant annoying voice in your ear all the time, now it's grown into the majority voice and is taking over the world. People don't know what to laugh at any more. There's a problem with everything. Bah...

I'm glad they're going for the old 90's FPS setup for this.

Why didn't you ask about the interactivity? Slacker. (just kidding ;) )

I mean, where did we first have a remote controlled car that brings an item to the player to progress in the game, SW or DNF?

Hope they have that done right too.

Looks like they're a two-project studio. They have over 60 employees, which is pretty big for a relatively new studio. Hard Reset must've done pretty well for them. Maybe they're working on a H.R. sequel in addition to Shadow Warrior?

I'm surprised I forgot that one, I hope they do add it, though there is no evidence from those screenshots I guess we will have to wait until they show some indoor shots.

So far I see nothing to be excited about, apart from a more advanced sword combat system.

What I like so far is that the developers are trying to make some authentically looking Japanese environments, and the monsters on the sketches and preview screenshots are decidedly inspired by Japanese culture and folklore.

In this respect, my opinion is that the original game lost a lot because the developers didn't really tap the rich potential of Japanese myths and folk tales where they could easily get lots of inspiration for interesting, unusual monster concepts that would actually work in the context of a FPS game.

Aren't these the guys who did Bulletstorm? That game was full of non-PC stuff and great humor (and enough jibbing).

I am hopeful. I'd need to see more game play and it would be great if they have a demo. One thing I am hoping for is that they remember the best part of 90's shooters: modding and mapping

These guys did Hard Reset, not Bulletstorm. They're too different companies, but they all started together in the same company originally, which is why they're both "trying" to bring back old school action (with varying commercial and conceptual success).

Trivia time! :P

I had no clue that IRL John Galt is a black belt in both Kung Fu and Taekwondo.

He also voiced President LBJ in both Forrest Gump and Oliver Stone's JFK....albeit not in his Lo Wang accent/dialect. ;)

I will laugh myself to death if this reboot doesn't have driveable vehicles. That was a revolutionary feature of Shadow Warrior, no doubt.
