You just gave me an insane idea.

That would be incredible. To 'play' Duke's development would be a genuinely novel way to tell the tale. Brilliant idea.

But for it to be true to the Duke legacy, I want to see iteration after iteration, engine changes, feature creep, a lawsuit, a mass exodus of employees and reassurances that everything is okay. Be abrasive and self-assured. Coming WID? Or should I just stay tuned? :)

Honestly, I would love to see that idea realised in any form. I really appreciate you taking the time to talk about DNF, Wieder. It's so cool to hear about your experiences working on the game.

A book or film wouldn't really do it justice. Never does for any story of course... but more importantly those mediums don't connect the story meaningfully to the people it would appeal to. What does? A game!

That has got to be the most cleverly hilarious post I've ever seen! It's so refreshing to see an ex-3DR staffer with such a good sense of humor. Of course such a game would never get green-lighted due to numerous confidentiality violations and subject matter with such relatively limited appeal...but the way you described it was entertaining enough in itself. :P

You level design, do sound, produce, code, AND you have an amazing knack for creative writing...is there anything Wieder can't do?? Me is jealous. :)

I have a lot of respect for the mapping Wieder did for the Caribbean and DC expansions. Nothing compared to those back in 96.

That was in the actual Slick Willy.

SLICK WILLY!

I knew someday I would know the real name of that place. I named it "Black Willy" on my "recreation". Because I could only see the C and the K on that old screenshot :P

I stopped working on the recreation map, but it would be rather fun and interesting if I could polish it a bit and release what I have - maybe you could tell me if it was close to the original? :)

This shot was taken before I made the "black willy" neon sign, but you get the idea!

Yeah, "Slick Willy" is a reference to former President Bill Clinton. It's a pretty dated reference now, but as someone who grew up in the 90's it's still pretty funny. :)

I hope you do finish it it! It looks very, very nice. Even after seeing your screenshot multiple times, I still have to do a double take- it really looks that authentic!! :)

I think a genuinely fun and informative (with tongue planted firmly in cheek) game could be made out of what it was like to work at 3DR on Duke.

-snip-

:) I don't want to play this game, this sucks more than that game that awards you for poop throwing.

Apart from that, there is Dukespaña and MSDN. But these were posted by us, who are doing it, so it doesnt count. And of course here.

If someone finds more, post a link here!

Somebody should email RPS with the trailer.

About the mod, will we be seeing the mutated EDF soldiers with yellow eyes and mutated civies as enemies?

Also watching the 2001 trailer again, I just noticed that the end of the shrink ray really does look like the Duke3D devastator so the sprite version in this mod definitely looks good.

Hope you guys are ready. Looks like these websites are taking your April 15th estimate quite seriously. :)

You know what I think would've been really funny, if you guys had set the date for April 14th. Then when the day came around say "Sorry it's been delayed for April 15th. :)" I don't know, it would just seem funny to me.

What about you? I already emailed them all the info when Gambini cracked his joke. Not sure if they read, though.

It *is* the 14th...at least according to here. Why does everybody keep saying the 15th? When and where has that date been given?? I know it's only a one day difference, but this is DNF we're talking about... :)

Just thought it would be right of me to post and say this is great work and I am really looking forward to it.

I am in the crowd that thinks it may have benefited from Polymer lights.. But... I understand and respect why you decided against those, besides, we have DNE for that and anyway, this thing looks so epic that I doubt I'll care what renderig mode is active when I get to play it. Excellent work guys!

I wrote that estimate date and I wrote april 15 and when i click on that link, i see april 15. Still, half the people i read talking about the release date are mentioning april 14. Which is crazy. I am sure some "genius" at ModDb added a script to "fix" timezone differences on dates and it takes my April 15 as April 15 00.00am so it is April 14 12.00 in the other side of the world.

Yeah I see April 14th as well.

A bit off topic, but I hope one day in the (far) future Eduke has more features and polymer is optimized well enough that we can make the '01 version (or rather, modify this mod :)) so it is graphically similar to the actual '01 version.

I don't know why, but I have a great fondness for the graphical style of games around that time (DNF '01 visually also heavily reminds me of monolith's games). For some reason they appeal to me almost as much as sprite-based games do.

Given the dynamic lighting, polymer would actually make it closer to the 2003 version.

The whole "Slick Willy" gag(no pun) had been known about since much longer ago than the release of that '03 trailer with DNF in 2011. :)
See his DOS-Prompt window. :P

Yeah, that too. I guess I've been away from the community for far too long.

I soooo feel that the magic halo that those old trailers and screenshots had NEEDS to come to life. This re-made Duke3d trailer does a great work, but I also wish that something that captures the essence with 2001-trailer like graphics was made. Too bad it's such a huge amount of work...

I think the biggest obstacle there would be all the photo-sourced elements. That would be really hard to recreate. The models and such are actually probably much easier. Even compared to what the current bar for the HRP is in terms of poly counts and so forth.

Speaking of that, model or sprite form, I want that fucking 2001 shotgun.

That thing's animation looked like it could blow a door clean off its hinges.

I'll be honest, practically all late 2012 shooters get shotguns just as right. Every new shooter I've played captured the intensity of the weapon.

I've always found a lot of newer games kind of make their shotguns more realistic looking in recoil instead of exaggerating, with certain exceptions.

Most notably the 870 MCS in Battlefield Bad Company 2. That thing felt amazing to use.

On topic, will there be a boat section in the mod? Or would adequately portraying those sequences be beyond the capabilities of the build engine?

Also I'm kinda hoping that we will get to face fast enemies that chase you while riding on the motorcycle. That would be badass.

Final question, how lengthy is the mod? Could it be comparable in length to a full game?

Absolutely not. This is a Duke3D mod.

it's already been implied, but you should delay the release for a week. then delay it again for another week to get that true DNF experience

A "true DNF" experience? But then wouldn't that technically make it into what we got (almost) two years ago??

I thought the whole purpose of this mod was to make it so that history did NOT repeat itself! :)

I kid, I kid. :P

But seriously, if a delay means that this mod will be as perfect as it can be and represent what the real DNF should be....then by all means, don't feel obligated to push it out prematurely. In fact, take as much time as you need- provided you eventually deliver a quality product.

As the great and mighty Hideo Kojima once said, "A late game is only late until it is released. A bad game is bad for all eternity".

There are full games shorter than Duke 3D mods.
